How deep is the river? If it's not very deep, then here's my vote... E. Have Thio deal with the Myrmidon quickly, while Lindy jumps into the river. The myrmidon won't be able to deal that much damage to Thio, due to his OP defense and Weapon Triangle, but Thio should be able to 2HKO the myrmidon, who has low defense, attack, and HP. Lindy then swims back to the shore, while Thio backs up, blocking the entrance of the bridge. Lindy will stand just behind him, out of possible Hand Axe range, and heal Thio while he tanks the enemies. Matthew will arrive soon, in all his blood crazed glory, so we only have to hold out. And we can't escape into the river anyway, as Os specifically mentioned how slow it is. Okay that works too.

The river is too slow to sweep her away, Clover. Of this I'm sure. Everyone knows how much I love Lindy. Do you really think I would create a plan that endangers her? If she doesn't jump in the river, then she will die, as she will be within easy reach of the barbarians while Thio deals with the myrmidon. I've already said it might take Thio a couple turns to defeat the myrmidon, and he won't be able to protect Lindy in that time. Thio can survive an attack or three from the barbarians as long as Lindy is close at hand to heal.
.... Which she won't be if she has an axe buried in her chest. And besides, where else would she go? She can't fight herself(not yet), and they're completely surrounded. The river is slow, and probably quite shallow. And there is no alternative.

I should probably mention some things about the environment.
River slows down movement (duh) +10 evasion
Lindy's cottage functions as a fort
The woods function as woods
If both ?? and Lindy make it to the woods, you have the ability to escape. May come back to bite you later.

Right. The bridge is narrow enough that no more than one assailant can attack you on either side, but that still leaves you being attacked from either direction. You are confident that you can handle them all in these conditions, but Lindy... You give her a sidelong glance. She won't be able to defend herself with just that staff of hers, and you can't defend her by yourself. You look down at the river, judging its depth and speed.
"Sorry about this," you tell her quickly, "but hold your breath."
"What?" She says quizzically. Her confusion turns to outrage just before before you push her off of the bridge. She crashes into the river with a loud splash and surfaces a moment later red faced and sputtering water, looking up furiously at you, her staff clutched in her hands like a club.
"Glad to see you're okay," you yell down, turning back just in time to parry a blow from the closest barbarian. You counter with a swift kick to his stomach and spring away, turning in midair to swipe your lance at the Myrmidon's head. The nimble swordsman parries the blow, but you keep your momentum going, driving your lance into his chest.
Tugging the lance out of the corpse with a swift jerk, you turn back to face the three remaining barbarians. A rush of adrenaline dulls the pain of your throbbing head and surges through your body, bringing a smile spreading across your face. Your heart pounding, fresh blood pouring from your head wound, outnumbered with a lance in your hand, you feel as alive as ever. You can't help but burst out laughing, startling your would-be killers, kidnappers, it doesn't matter anymore. They are dead men. "I'm not quite dead yet!" You laugh, walking forward arms outstretched. "Do any of you cowards want to fix that?"
The first barbarian, the one you kicked looks down at Lindy, who is still climbing her way out of the river, then back up at you before yelling. "Ignore your orders! Take them down!" He charges forward, his axe raised overhead. You dash in quick, holding your lance up near the head, catching him by surprise as you swiftly jab him in the throat. You toss the body overboard and a few quick jabs later, and his two compatriots join him. You walk back toward Lindy, not willing to look over your handiwork. You wince and stagger as you walk forward. You must have been hurt more than you thought. Unexpectedly, You feel something cold and wet under your arm, and you see Lindy, supporting you as you hobble toward her cottage. She ushers you inside and sits you down on a bed while she lifts up a floorboard, slipping a vulnerary into her pocket.
"You were pretty scary up there," she says as she pulls a clean bandage out of nowhere.
"I know," you say thinking back to his sudden burst of laughter up on the bridge.
"And stupid," she adds as she sits down behind you. Before you can protest, she slips off your bloodstained bandage and replaces it with fresh cloth. You wince, ready for her to notice your ears, but she either doesn't notice, or more likely ignores it, as she goes on talking...,"and I'm still mad at you for throwing me into the river," she emphasizes this by tapping you harshly on the side of your head with her heal staff twice, "but thank you for saving me." Lindy suddenly leans forward, pecking you on the cheek.
"Now come on!" She says getting up as you sit bewildered on the bed. "By the sound of that brigand you killed, there are more of them, and that means that Matthew might be in trouble. Now I know the way, but I can't fight like you can." She glances back to see you still sitting on the bed. She rolls her eyes before shutting the door. A moment later, you are up and hurrying after her, lance in hand.

Skills: Charm: +10 accuracy and evasion to nearby allies ------ so, to people who read the original, yeah, Matthew is a bit different this time around. Don't worry. Myrmidons and lords are just pretty close growth-wise and it made more sense to actually meet the lord at the start of the game and not 5 chapters in. And I worked from there.

Oh, they are still there. they just don't have the lord class. Alicia is the new myrmidon in fact. Most characters have returned, if not in name, then in personality. There are also several new characters.
And Matthew is still as mad as a march hare. It has a bit more of an explanation this time then, "he became insane and now he is becoming insane again. Oh noes"
Here's a game. Guess how many recruitable characters with new names exist in OoD as of right now?

Matthew ---- Heart pounding, you race back to town as quick as you can, dodging branches and bushes both. Finally, the first houses, built up on stilts in case the Egress or the Exodus flood. As you come to a stop in the center of town, which is marked by a large wooden pole, since the houses are mostly strewn about with no order or reason except save that they face one of the main rivers, you are able to take relief in the fact that you came to a calm serene town in the rising sun, and not one that is alive with flames. Your town (which is hardly a town at all if you are honest with yourself) Forks, is a small fishing village that uses the rivers to sell river trout to Sarcorn and ship cloth south to the trading towns on the Ebony Coast. It lies on the border between Renarre and Maja, and yet had protection from neither with the war in the east. In fact, you crossed it rescuing Lindy and that creep last night. You still feel uneasy leaving him with her, but that boy was right that the village would have a better chance if he wasn't around.
Something is wrong you realize suddenly. There should be people about at this time of the morning. The smell of fish, the laughter of children. A pit of despair forms in your stomach as you come to the realization that you are too late. Far too late. Your despair grows, looking to swallow you, only matched by the rage simmering in your chest. You reach up and grasp Arelis' hilt drawing it quickly, with none of your usual flourish. Your rage explodes in your chest, and Arelis burns bright white with it.
A deep throaty laugh bursts out from behind you and a large bearded man steps out of one of the huts to your right perhaps a dozen yards away. His chest is broad thick haired chest is crisscrossed by scabbards and sheathes for various knives and axes, with only lightweight cloth pants to protect legs. His feet are noticeably bare. The man was either cocky or incredibly dangerous. Perhaps both. A mage clothed in richly dyed heavy hooded robes steps out behind him, setting fire to the structure as they exit.
"Now that is an impressive sword boy. I look forward to adding it to my collection." The large man laughs as he walks up to you, stopping just out of range of your blade.
"Where are they!" You yell, bearing Arelis at him menacingly. The hooded mage raises a flaming hand ready to strike you down, but the large man waves him off. "Do you mean your countrymen?" The man asks with mockingly. "I don't know Jarvis. What did we do with them again?
Another pirate, who must be jarvis comes out of a hut behind you. "The rest o' our crew came and took em down south Cap'n."
"Ah yes, that's right. And work on that accent Jarvis, we're in more civilized lands now." He turns back to look at Matthew and shrugs his shoulders. "You see, there's nothing I can do. Most of your countrymen are probably halfway to my ship by now."
You immediately take a swipe at the Captain who dances out of range of your blade and continues talking. "You see, I would be more polite to me if I were you, because you see, we didn't take everyone south. A dozen or so are still here, a little tied up in these lovely little huts of yours." The Captain watches your gaze flick to the fire in the mage's hand, then to the burning hut behind him. "Oh, don't worry. There isn't anyone else in there."
"I'm going to kill you," you say, your knuckles white as you grip Arelis.
"You can certainly try. But if you do, this town is going to burn and those poor villagers with it. If you surrender to me now, we can leave and I'll leave this village alone. How does that sound?"
A) Agree to his terms B) attack him C) try to attack the mage D) retreat E) search a hut
Note: if you try to do anything that involves getting past the captain to complete it, he will try to attack you. If he succeeds in hitting you, you are forced to fight him.
If you save at least one of the villagers, they will become a new character. They will be an npc that does not participate in combat for the next several chapters, before becoming a recruit. They have the potential to become any human class. It's random. (Kind of random)
?? And Lindy will join after one turn.
Oh yeah. This will be quite helpful. Bosses will always get status screens.

Ugh... I'm actually unsure on this one. Hmm... I say go for the Mage. Matthew is fast, and with the weapon triangle advantage, I doubt Gerard will hit him. But then again... If he gets lucky, Matthew could get killed on one turn, because of low HP... Dammit... Sorry Os, I'm off my game a bit. I'm going to abstain from voting for now.
On a much happier note, yay! Lindy x Thio yet lives! My ship is still afloat!
Also, we can still get Matt's unique Reaver class, right?

It isn't Reaver anymore, but he does have a unique class. He is also just over powered in general with high growths and good skills.
Also, this is the first chapter. I'm not making it so that the boss can one shot everything... yet.
Matthew has a vulnerary and a very good sword for early game and only needs to live for at least one turn. I'm not going to pull my punches, but I haven't thrown them yet either.
Oh yeah, for the future:
Example weapon: might/hit rate/uses remaining
