Gritting your teeth, you fake a lunge with Arelis, causing the pirate captain to step back, giving you enough room to slip past. Immediately you go for the mage, who already is readying a fire spell to try to incinerate you.
The mage's eyes flick behind you and you hear the faint sound of leather against iron. You don't see the axe, but you feel it as it cuts into your back as you narrowly avoid a possibly lethal blow. You roll, feeling the sting of dirt entering your open wound. You spring to your feet to find several more houses already ablaze and the Pirate Captain in front of you.
"I am Gerard!" He bellows, "Fourth Pirate Lord of the Sons of Neptune. I have slain dragons, boy. What chance have you against me?"
You curse silently. You will need to kill this Gerard before you can fight that mage or before any of his lackeys decide to finish you off.
"I'm fast," you say, swinging Arelis around. The blade moves smoothly, and though your wound burns with the effort, your movement is unhindered. "And I'm strong," you say dropping into a combat stance bringing your blade down hard in front of you. "But I can see that you are too, so really, I just want it more."
Not wasting another breath, you strike, swinging your blade in fast, defensive arcs, keeping Gerard at bay and forcing him back toward the flaming houses, painfully aware of what is at stake.
you haven't heard anyone dying in there... yet
You can still save them if you strike now. Fainting a low strike, Gerard predictably lowers his axe to block, leaving his his left shoulder exposed.
Bringing the blade around your head, you power forward diagonal strike meant to cleave the pirate lord in two, putting all of your weight behind the blow.
And it is over.
Your entire body rings with pain as Gerard catches Arelis on a second, oddly shaped axe axe just inches away from his neck and forces the blade into his shoulder where it comes to a halt less than an inch into his massive arm.
At least you managed to wound him you think wryly
as Arelis is wrenched from your grasp by the oddly shaped axe, and sent skittering several yards away and Gerard plants his first axe deep into your shoulder, sending you to your knees.
Gerard leaves his axe in your shoulder and crouches down beside you. He pats you roughly on the back sending fire flaring throughout your body and chuckles like it is some sick joke of his.
"If it's any consolation," he says in his rough gravelly voice, "I was lying earlier. The ones we left inside them hits of yers, we trussed up like pigs so they wouldn't let ye know we were 'ere. So ye won't 'ave to hear em scream after all."
You want to scream. You want to do something, but you can hardly even form words as your shoulder screams in agony and darkness threatens to swallow you. Dimly, you think of a little glass bottle in your pocket, something that you've saved for a time like this, if only you could reach it... Or your sword. Maybe you could still turn this around...
Gerard 22/30 Throwing axe: 23/25
Matthew 1/19 Arelis: --/-- --- Congratulations!
You made the right call despite what it looks like. It had a 60% chance of working, and the chance you ended up with a nearly dead Matthew was 20%. At least you got a hit in. If you chose B, the only difference would be that Gerard would have 15/30 health instead.
Also, Gerard will double our odd-eared protagonist so keep that in mind. ---

Son of a b**** Anna!! Really? Really?!!
*Sigh* Use the Elixir and try to finish off Gerard. At this rate, there's no point in even trying to save the villagers. They're dead anyway. Let's just hurry up and kill Gerard, before Thio gets here. He can finish off the Mage.

Wow. Anna really is fickle. Earlier I forgot to roll for Gerard's attack during the enemy turn. So you know how Matthew had only 1 health?
HE STILL HAS 1 HEALTH! Anna was actually merciful for once, and even better, that means I need to roll a counter attack for Matthew, which means that the results I mapped out for Matthew's next options are null and void since my rule is that the rolls are in the order they would occur regardless of what I think I'm rolling for! And since I didn't write it down and only memorized the results and not the numbers, Matthew isn't in a no win scenario where he dies no matter what path he takes, since two of them end in critical hits! Rejoice!
I know I'm happy. That's rare. Happy rants from me? Don't get used to it.

?? --- You match Lindy's pace as you head downriver, following the riverbank, trying not to think about how the barbarians knew about Lindy's cottage. Nothing good could come of it. Your fears were realized a moment later when you begin to smell a fire. A minute later, you come to a break in the trees, and thick collumns of black smoke rise above the treeline.
Lindy looks up at them and gasps, before sprinting off towards where the fire is coming from. You chase after her, catching up to her in a clearing filled with thatched huts on stilts, sitting above the riverbank. On the far side of the clearing, several huts burn, and through the huts, you spy Matthew fighting a large man wielding two axes. Before you can help him, Matthew makes a misstep and the axe wielder takes him down.
Beside you, Lindy gasps in shock and opens her mouth to scream at her fallen friend. Hastily, you clamp and hand over her mouth, muffling her shout. If Matthew was still alive, getting themselves killed wouldn't help him very much. And if he was dead, getting killed wouldn't do anyone any good, except for the people trying to kill them.
The Barbarian leans down next to Matthew and says something quietly, to quiet for you to hear with your ears muffled by your fresh head wrapping, but if he spoke, then perhaps Matthew is still alive. Perhaps, and if he was, he probably wouldn't be for long. Suddenly, Lindy bites your hand, causing you to wince, allowing her to wriggle out of your grasp.
"We have to help him!" She whispers harshly, "and the other villagers! We can't leave them to die."
"I'm not going to leave him," you say. It isn't likely that there are any other villagers here any longer, but you aren't going to trouble Lindy with that bit of information. "We need to be smart about this. If we just charge in there who knows what is going to happen! We don't know how many men are hiding in there!"
"But he needs out help!" Lindy insists. You sigh, looking back at Matthew's motionless form.
You quickly scan the village again. Matthew mentioned roughly a dozen men earlier. At least eight are dead. They couldn't count on Matthew killing any more. So they should expect at least four men. At the very least, if they were expecting you and Lindy to show up, they would anticipate you to come from the south, so you would at least have the element of surprise if you struck from the north, the burning side. If you are lucky, the smoke might even hide your initial approach. But it would take some time to move into position...
"Or we could just let them know we're here. It's us they want after all, and we have the advantage in the trees."
"That could work too," you concede.
A. Charge forward to help Matthew B. Circle around and attack from the north (costs 1 round to set up) C. Call out to the barbarians and draw attention to yourself ---- What does Matthew do? Pick 2.
(Essentially what he will do for the next two turns)
1 Take a swig of your vulnerary (heals 10 hp) 2 Retreive Arelis (do ya feel lucky punk?) and attack Gerard 3. Retreat to Lindy and ??
Note: Matthew's actions will always occur in numerical order. You may pick 1 and 2 multiple times. 3 can only be chosen once.

So, we can pick all three right?
B, 1, 2, and 3. Lindy and Thio circle around into position. Matthew drinks his vulnerary, grabs his blade and takes a swipe at Gerard. I'm betting on a critical hit here, since Os said Anna was nice. Matthew then moves to join Thio and Lindy, as she discreetly signals to him while getting into position. Gerard, hopefully still reeling from a critical hit, will charge after Matthew, enraged, leaving his buddies behind. He won't be able to see Thio and Lindy because of the smoke, so he won't know he's walking right into an ambush. Lindy will heal Matthew completely, and Matthew will then finish off Gerard.
