"We need to dispose of the bodies before they become Risen..." Nevyn reminds everyone.
No one responds, everyone quietly staring at the monumental task ahead. Soo'ah is the first to start, moving over to one of the bodies and kneeling down. She tries to pick it up, only to fall over. Hyun'ji is quick to walk over and put a hand on her shoulder, guiding her up and pushing her towards one of the side rooms.
"But..." Soo'ah complains.
Shep takes over, shooing her with his staff. "Shush. You need to rest, and I need to look at your injuries to make sure they're going to heal properly. Prince Rand, you come along, too."
"My leg's fine, I should help-"
"I wasn't asking. In bed, or you might end up out of commission when it really matters. The rest of us can handle this."
"Doc's orders, huh... Fine," Rand says. "I should check on Soo'ah, too..."
While most of the others get started with the job of bringing the bodies outside to burn, Rand and Soo'ah settle in to a corner of what seems to have been the barracks. Shep gives them both a quick check, tending to Soo'ah's injuries and adding a few bandages. He glances at Rand's leg, pokes and prods a bit, then seems satisfied. "It's healing well. You should be able to walk without someone dragging you in a day or two."
"Great..." Rand mutters. "We have so much time to waste."
"You should have thought about that before jumping out of a tree," Shep says.
"Better than leaving someone up here to die."
"Somewhat," Shep admits.
Soo'ah sighs softly at that. She stares at Rand's leg. "Die, huh..."
"Ah... Sorry. I didn't mean to remind you about... all of your friends."
"Friends? I guess. More comrades, really, but I still liked most of them. And even the real jackasses weren't so bad they deserved to die," Soo'ah says in a calm, flat tone. "Worse than that was letting them kill the Voice. Were it not for Hyun'ji - Lord Hyun'ji's insistence, I would throw myself from the window for this failure."
"Please don't," Rand says. He gestures at his leg. "It's not pleasant."
Soo'ah gives a small, weak smile. "I'll keep that in mind, you absolute lunatic. Who are you, anyway?"
"Rand. Prince of Carcina."
"Ah... Whoops. I didn't realize. Forgive my familiarity."
"It's fine. I don't get hung up on titles. None of my family does, really."
"I see..."
"I take it that's why you got sent up here in the first place. Accidentally insulting some minor lord without realizing who he was or something like that?"
Soo'ah lets out a small, nervous laugh. "S-something like that, yes... mi'lord. Your highness."
"I don't feel particularly high and mighty lying in this bed," Rand says. "So you can drop that sort of talk."
"Oh... OK, then."
"Why don't you tell me a bit more about this place, since we're going to be stuck here together for a while."
"Oh, it's great. Mostly. Er, was. The Voice is - was - a great lady. Loved meeting new people and sharing stories. And everyone here was just a little bit off in one way or another, real interesting folks..."
As Soo'ah goes on with her story, her speech slurs and slows until she passes out from exhaustion and injury. Rand makes sure she's still breathing normally, then turns his attention elsewhere. A tap from a nearby hole in the wall catches his attention. He notices Pixie perched on the windowsill, staring at him.
"Hey," Rand says.
Pixie responds by dropping back out of the window and disappearing from sight.
"Bye, I guess?" Rand says.
A few moments later, Pixie's head pokes back in. "U-um... Sorry... I wasn't ready for you to... see me yet."
"Why not?" Rand asks. "You look fine to me."
Pixie ducks down again, this time for a much shorter time. "I meant I haven't... decided how to apologize to you yet..."
"For what?"
"Breaking your leg...?" Pixie asks, incredulous.
"You didn't break my leg, Pixie. The ground did. With some help from gravity."
"You shouldn't... but... I missed catching you..." she stammers.
"I guess that's true. But then you caught me. You fixed your screwup in the end, so..."
"But your leg's still broken?"
"Ah. Yes. That's true."
"Sorry... It's my fault..." Pixie bows her head.
"Well, why don't you make it up to me then?" Rand suggests.
Pixie snaps to attention from her perch. "A-ah... B-but... I'm not... I c-can't... I wouldn't, don't know... um... I don't know how to..."
"How to... what, exactly?" Rand asks.
"Do... that sort of thing..." Pixie says quietly.
Rand shifts to sit up slightly. "What, you don't know how to sit and chat with someone...?"
"Ah... No, I can... do that, but I'm not... very... good at it... B-but if you really want to... do it with someone like me, I can... try..."
"I'd like that. But, uh... What exactly did you think I was asking you to do earlier?"
"Well... A lot of laguz are taken as slaves, and some are kept as pets, but others are, um... well... I-I've just... heard a lot of scary stories from laguz that escaped to Sefa Forest..."
"I... see. Sorry. I didn't mean-"
"I-I know. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring up such a... touchy subject..." Pixie stutters. "We can... talk about something else... like trees... or... fish...?"
"Sure," Rand says.
Shep looks in to check on his patients and sees Pixie sitting on the edge of Rand's bed chatting with him, then closes the door. "They're probably fine... Ugh. No more putting it off, I guess." He heads out to the balcony to find several figures sitting on the edge, enjoying the view and the cool, evening air. "Hey, Allune. Got a second?"
"Hmph... I suppose," she says. She flaps to bring herself to her feet, then strolls inside. "What is it?"
"Is, uh... Do you feel OK?"
"What?"
"Do you... feel OK? You're not hurt anywhere?" Shep probes.
"What, from the battle?"
"Or a bit before, maybe..."
"If you're asking whether it hurt having you ride me, no. It was utterly demeaning, but not painful."
"Ah, good to hear. About the not painful part, I mean. And I want to assure you that if it were my choice I never would have... done something like that..." Shep puts a hand to his mouth. "Oh, I feel ill just thinking about it."
"We laguz are that nauseating to you?"
"Don't... twist my words. I get sick thinking of riding any animals."
Allune narrows her eyes. "We're animals now?"
"That's not... what I mean and you know it. I don't think I'd particularly enjoy riding a beorc, either..."
"Whatever. If we're done discussing your issues, I was enjoying the sunset."
"Sorry to bother y- oh, right. Here. I might have... accidentally..." He holds up a handful of large, brown feathers.
Allune continues to glare. "Oh, yes, let me just pop those back in."
"I can help if-"
"Keep them. As a memento of riding a laguz, something very few beorc will ever do." Allune turns and begins storming off, heels clacking loudly against the wood floor. "Or throw them away. Or give them to someone. I don't care."
"Sorry!" Shep calls after her.

"Ha! Tch... Not good enough. Faster... faster... and... HA! Dammit." Snowy throws her lance down in frustration. "Hey. You!"
"...Me?" Gin asks.
"Yes, you."
"Um..."
"You know how to use a lance, yeah? Get over here and help me train."
"Oh. Is that all you need?" Gin asks. "Yeah, I can help with that. Let me go get a training lance-"
"Don't bother. I'll be fine as long as I don't let you hit me. Besides, there's a healer around." Snowy picks her lance up again. "Besides, knowing I'm not in any danger is just going to make me sloppy."
"But-"
"Calm down, I'm not going to hit you. You just need to try to stop me from hitting that dummy."
"But-"
"Shut up and stab me already!" "Eun'ji... I've been thinking," Nevyn says.
"About leadership again?"
"Ah. That obvious?"
"Yes... You are," Eun'ji assures him. "What did you come up with?"
"I had a question for you, actually...
"Then ask."
"It is perhaps rather personal, but do you mind?"
"Ah. You're still welcome to ask, but be warned I may not answer."
"Of course. Why do you follow Lord Hyun'ji?"
"That is the question you were so worried to ask?"
"I was worried the answer may be... personal, as I said."
"Not particularly. I serve Lord Hyun'ji because he is worthy of my service."
"That's... it?"
"My family has been in service of the emperor's family from long before they were royalty... but I did not have to choose Lord Hyun'ji."
"So why did you choose him?"
"Because he is introspective, yet does not let his thoughts stop him from doing what must be done."
"I see... I think," Nevyn says. "You've given me more to think about. Thank you."
Eun'ji lets a small smile slip through. "So long as you don't let your thought stop you from acting."
Nevyn nods and walks away. Eun'ji thinks for a moment, then decides to go check the balcony for signs of any threats in the distance.
She finds Alice sitting on the edge, legs swinging in the night breeze, staring up at the stars. "The sky's so pretty here..." she says. She cranes her neck and realizes who she's talking to. "Oh... You're not Allune."
"Indeed I am not. But there are many people that I'm not, and only one that I am, so perhaps it would be faster to start there," Eun'ji says.
Alice laughs. "That's true. Eun'ji... Hm."
"Is something wrong? You're staring at me rather intensely."
"Ah, I was just thinking about your outfit," Alice explains.
"My... outfit?"
"Yes. Honestly, I'd be fine without one, but apparently that's 'inappropriate' and makes some people 'uncomfortable.'"
"Yes... Modesty is seen as quite important in Valm."
"And your dress is considered acceptable?"
"What? Of course it is!"
"Oh, no, I didn't mean any offense. I was just thinking, if we have any free time while we're in Valm, I might stop at a tailor... not that I expect we'll have much freedom."
"I never thought you for the type to have any interest in fashion."
"Fashion? Ah, I was more interested in the function. It looks nice, but also quite breezy... comfortable, easy to move in," Alice explains. "I loathe having to dress up in stuffy outfits to meet with foreign dignitaries, but... Well..."
"Ah... Yes. As Lord Hyun'ji's retainer, I have to dress in a way which will not embarrass him, but still allows me to respond to any threats quickly and efficiently." Eun'ji looks around. "...I'm going to go check on my sister. Will you raise the alarm if you see those wyverns returning?"
Alice nods.
"...And you won't be too busy staring at the sky to notice?"
"Don't worry about that... It's harder to sneak up on me than you might expect. Hello, Rhett."
"Hello," Rhett says from behind Eun'ji, causing her to jump slightly.
"Ah... Excuse me." Eun'ji gives Alice and Rhett a slight bow, then heads to the infirmary.
Rhett watches her go, then walks to stand behind Alice. "Hi. Aren't you worried you might fall sitting there?"
"Not really," Alice says. "I guess a gust of wind could knock me over, the wind spirits are quite strong here, but I doubt it. And even if something did happen perhaps using strong enough wind magic would allow me to survive the fall..."
"Oh, you could fly like Allune?"
Alice laughs. "Who knows? If I studied wind magic enough, perhaps. But I'd rather not find out if I'm at that level yet unless I have to."
"Don't worry, if you fall I'll try to grab you."
"Thank you, Rhett."
"So what are you doing?"
"Looking at the stars..." Alice says.
"Because they're different from the stars you can see from home." Rhett nods. "I understand. Some are the same, just at different positions and angles. It's fun to observe."
"I'm also trying to adjust to the nature spirits here in Valm... Just as the stars a bit different, the spirits are as well. They... whisper different whispers. The feel differently. They don't react the same. They feel... calmer. More relaxed. More... hm... It's hard to describe, but perhaps more... refined? More used to being around people."
"I don't understand," Rhett says.
"That's fine," Alice says. "No one can understand everything, right?"
"Oh... I understand. I understand I don't need to understand." Rhett nods again. "I just need to understand that it's important to you, right?"
"That's right. Just like I don't understand everything about raising pegasi..."
"Oh. That makes sense," Rhett says. "I'm going to watch the stars with you for a while."
"I'd like that."

Suarrure sneaks up behind Pixie and taps her shoulder. Pixie squeaks, leaps into the air, and flies halfway across the room before she turns and stares.
"Uh... Hi," Suarrure says.
Pixie glares quietly, floating in the air.
"Do you... want to come down here to talk? It's a bit awkward shouting at you from all the way over here."
Pixie continues to glare, but she lets herself sink a bit lower to the ground.
Suarrure hesitantly walks over. Pixie floats back slightly, but doesn't retreat. "You're not wearing your necklace?" he asks.
Pixie shakes her head, then rummages in the pouch on her hip. She pulls out the necklace just enough to show it, then tucks it back in and seals it tight. "It's safer..."
"You think so? Well, maybe. Kind of a shame, though. It looks really good on you. But I guess if it's important to you, more important to keep it safe, right? You can just wait to wear it once the fighting's calmed down."
Pixie nods. "Yeah..."
"And, hey, your outfit's already really cute. Since it's so simple, it really lets your natural beauty shine through. That hair, those gorgeous arms... and those striking black feathers, beautiful. But, hm... Tell ya what. Next time we're in town, how about you let me get you, say... maybe a bracelet? No, an anklet would be perfect to draw people's eyes to those long legs and cute li'l feet of yours."
Pixie withdraws slightly.
"Too strong?"
"C-cute?" Pixie asks quietly. "You think I'm... N-no, I don't... want to stand out."
Suarrure strokes his chin. "Alright. We'll go for something a bit more restrained. Something that'll look good on you, but not flashy. Something only the people who are already looking will appreciate. How's that sound?"
"Um... M-maybe that would... be OK... Maybe..."
"Great! I'll look forward to it. Later, Pixie!"
"L-later...?" she says quietly. She lets herself float down to the ground as Suarrure walks off.
"Pixie," Mina says from behind her.
Pixie proceeds to twirl around, darting back upwards. "Wha-?"
"Ah! Sorry, sorry. I didn't mean to startle you...!"
"I-it's OK. I know I'm... jumpy."
"Right... I thought you'd hear me coming. It feels like Allune always knows exactly where everyone is at all times, somehow."
"W-well, she's... I'm not like her."
"Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to... Sorry."
"N-no, I'm sorry. About, um... Prince Rand. I'm so sorry..."
"He, um... told me what happened. You caught him in the end and, well, he'll live, so..." Mina scratches her head. "Don't... worry about it too much..."
"OK... Sorry." Rand wakes up the next morning to find Soo'ah gone. He bolts up, then immediately collapses again. "Ow, ow, ow..." he mutters, grabbing his leg.
"Hey. Calm down, Prince. Shep took her to walk around a bit and get some fresh air." Rand turns to see Fei stretched out in the bed on his other side. She rests her head on her arm and stares. "He said it'd be good for helping her recover or something... for her to stretch a bit while she heals."
"Oh. Yeah, I guess that makes sense," Rand says.
"It does!" Fei assures him. "Trust me, I've been injured enough that I can say with 100% certainty that if you do nothing but lounge around it's way worse. Well, not for injuries like yours. But the type of injury she had, yeah. Gotta stretch and stuff."
"I'm surprised hearing that from you," Rand says with a smirk.
"Hey, I can do stretching and stuff between naps." Fei grins and rolls over. "Besides, I'm usually dealing with blood loss, which is a bit different. My fighting style may be a bit wild and get me hurt a lot, but the injuries are usually superficial, y'know? I may let the enemy get in a few hits so I can get them where I want them, but I make sure they don't hit anything important or hit too deep."
"And you wear just enough armor to only protect your most vital spots," Rand says. "You're really good at twisting your body to bounce the harder blows off it instead of dodging them."
"Oh, noticed that, did you?" Fei rolls back to face Rand again. "Guess you're watching me closer than I thought. Better make sure I put on a good show for the prince..."
"Please do," Rand says. "Because that fighting style's really risky. One slip and you'll get seriously hurt. And you wouldn't want to make me watch that, would you?"
"Of course not..." Fei yawns. "But why ever would you be watching me of all people..."
"You may slack off a lot, but you're really reliable in a fight. Make sure you keep that up and maybe I'll help you sneak off from time to time?"
"Really? You've got a deal, Prince Rand..."

CHAPTER 9V: Awakening "Prince Rand!" Eun'ji comes running into the room in a panick, practically kicking the door open.
It's been three days since the battle. After the much-needed rest, everyone's injuries have finished healing. Today's supposed to be the day that the group is supposed to make the march towards the Valmese capital to report everything that's happened, but Rand suddenly has a sinking feeling that won't be happening.
"What is it?" he asks, stopping himself from adding 'now.'
"Troops are approaching. They bear the insignia of the emperor's brother," she explains. "Lord Hyun'ji's uncle."
""His uncle... I seem to recall hearing the emperor has many siblings, right?"
"Six, milord. Lord Hyun'ji's father, the minister of finance, is second in line for the throne. Lord Chun'ae is the third."
"But what is he doing here?" Rand asks.
"I assume someone raised an alarm about the attack on the Voice?" Eun'ji says.
Rand is quiet for a moment. Something about that feels wrong. "How... How long would it have taken for them to put together a response?"
"Hm? No time at all, milord," Eun'ji assures him. "Lord Chun'ae is responsible for keeping a force ready to respond at any point."
"But how long would it have taken word to reach the capital, and them to make it here?"
"Ah? Ah... He doesn't often remain in the capital, Prince Rand. They usually move around the country dealing with local issues, driving out bandits and the like. It's hard to predict where they'll be at any time... so I'm afraid I couldn't say, milord."
Rand's lips tighten. "How convenient for them to be in the area... In time to get here after the fight, but not soon enough to intervene..."
"Milord, please excuse my forwardness, but you sound rather... I fear the recent events may be wearing on your nerves."
"...You might be right," Rand says. "I hope you are."
"Lord Hyun'ji is preparing to go meet him and asked whether you would like to join him."
Rand stops to think. Is he just being paranoid? This does certainly feel convenient...

"Yes, of course I'll go. And I'll bring Mina... And we should bring Alice and Allune, too. Ah, and Shep. Just in case my leg starts acting up," Rand says.
"Of course. I'll gather them immediately." Eun'ji bows as she takes her leave.
Rand thinks for a bit. "Pixie, can you hear me?" he asks quietly.
Pixie perks up across the room and looks towards Rand.
"After we head down the stairs, tell Nevyn to have everyone standing by, just in case."
Pixie gives a small nod, then goes back to staring out the window.
Rand and his group begin the long descent down the stairs. It takes what feels like an hour to reach the bottom. At the base of the tree, Rand makes his way out onto the network bridge-like roots over a small lake. Alice prances along the roots, seemingly in a good mood as she makes her way across. Allune stays directly above her, and Mina stays right behind Rand.
A band of a half-dozen mounted soldiers approaches slowly from the other side, their leader dressed in bright yellow robes with two spears slung across his back. A group of three archers and three mages wait patiently behind, with another three dozen troops assembled at the edge of the roots.
"Hyun'ji. Eun'ji. Soo'ah. Explain yourselves," the leader demands without further pomp.
"Lord Chun'ae. How long since we've seen each other," Hyun'ji says. "I only wish it were under better circumstances."
"I am not here to exchange pleasantries. We received word of an attack. Explain yourselves, now."

Chun'ae spares Rand and the others little more than a glance, quickly sizing them up then focusing his attention back to Hyun'ji. "Well?"
"Well indeed..." Hyun'ji folds his arms. "Where to begin. While I was in Carcina and Valeria, we were attacked by a group of assassins... multiple times. They attacked us when we landed back in Valm, as well. After we drove them off, they mentioned they were coming to attack the Voice, so-"
"If I could inter- ah, that is, if I may interject, milords?" Soo'ah says.
"No. Be silent," Chun'ae says. "Hyun'ji. Continue."
"We came to the world tree as fast as possible. Had I known you were so close, I would have sent a messenger."
"The Voice, boy. What of the Voice?"
"I'm sorry, Uncle. We failed."
Chun'ae's lips twist in disgust. "And why is she alive?" He stabs his spear in Soo'ah's direction.
"She was on the border of death when we arrived, surrounded and struggling to fight with what should have been mortal injuries."
"Dying before your charge. Pathetic."
"A moment, uncle. Soo'ah, what did you wish to say ear-"
"Be silent, boy. There is no need to listen to the words of a treasonous failure such as her." Chun'ae runs a hand through his beard. "All of you will throw down your weapons and remain here until the truth of this incident is found. As for her..." He gestures to Soo'ah, then to his men. "She has failed in her duty. Take the traitor for execution. Immediately."
Rand, surprised, glances at Hyun'ji. Hyun'ji starts to protest, then hesitates.
(A) Yeah, no, we're not giving up our weapons, and you're spoiling for a fight. (B) This is... suspicious. We need to talk further. (C) We'll come with you, but we're not giving up our weapons. (D) Fine...
(1) You're not touching Soo'ah. (2) Say nothing. (3) Encourage Hyun'ji.

Hahaha nope sorry Hyun'ji, B1(&3 if'n we get the chance), if you don't want a perfectly good War Monk Carcina is taking her now what is this about you taking our weapons so you can easily kill/imprison us when you figure out how to pin this on us awfully convenient you want to silence the one person who was there

Rand shifts halfway between Soo'ah and Chun'ae. "We've still got things to discuss before you can execute anyone."
Chun'ae seems to notice Rand for the first time. "That armor... Carcinan. Whoever you are, you have no right to intervene in Valmese affairs."
"This has nothing to do with politics. You say you intend to find the 'truth of this incident' yet you intend to silence the only witness?" Rand demands.
"There is no reason to trust a traitor's words. She failed in her duties. There is nothing left to discuss. And I have no need to justify myself to you."
Rand ignores Chun'ae. "Hyun'ji, what were you saying?"
Hyun'ji shakes his head. "Ah, yes. Right. I have some questions for you."
"I don't appreciate your tone, boy."
"You say you received word of an attack. When? From who?"
Chun'ae glares.
"I'm going to guess none of you saw the enemy force retreating," Hyun'ji says. "Flock of wyverns? No?"
None of the soldiers show any emotion.
"You're third in line for the throne behind Hyun'ji's father," Rand says. "It would be... convenient for you if his son were disgraced by failing to save the Voice... or worse, if he had something to do with the assassination."
"It would be a problem for a Carcinan to get wrapped up in Valmese affairs..." Chun'ae says. "The fallout could be... messy."
"Your horses are wrong..." Alice says, staring at one of the closest.
That actually caught Chun'ae off-guard. "I... What?"
"You've been riding hard for days..." Alice tilts her head. "Why?"
"Enough of this. I don't know who you are, but get out of here. Immediately. You, your bird, and the Carcinans." He points at Alice, Allune, and Rand in turn.
(A) Get out of here, immediately (B) Signal Pixie to order an attack (C) Grab Soo'ah and run back to the tree (D) "Now, now, let's all calm down..." (E) Say nothing, let Hyun'ji lead
