Shortly after the second fall of Grima, those devoted to him established a nation around his remains: Carcina. His worshippers, the Grimleal, soon found one who could channel their fallen god's words. A distant descendant of Medeus soon became Grima's Voice, and the first king of Carcina. Under his orders, a grand city was created at the base of the mountains where their god fell. This city was named Antea. The king, by Grima's command, commissioned the creation of a sword and shield. From the Fell Dragon's claw came Flamberge, a wicked curved blade that only those loyal to Grima could wield. One of the dragon's scales was hewn into the Shadow Emblem, a nigh-impenetrable, onyx-colored shield designed to mirror the Fire Emblem. For one hundred years, the Grimleal lived in peace, worshiping the remains of their dead god.
On the continent of Ylisse, a massive war erupted. The country of Regna Ferox, under the rule of a new, bloodthirsty khan, suddenly launched an attack on the halidom of Ylisse. Ylisse rallied, but its forces suffered loss after loss. It soon became apparent their defeat was inevitable. The leader of Ylisse, the Exalt, split his forces in two in one last, desperate plan. The Exalt personally led the brunt of his army in a heroic last stand on the Divine Dragon Naga's sacred ground. His forces fought valiantly, desperately, but they stood no chance against the flood of Feroxi troops. Still, the Exalt stood his ground to the last man. Even as he lay dying, the Exalt smiled - his gambit had succeeded.
A small detachment of the Ylissian army, joined by a horde of civilian refugees, had fled. Led by the Exalt's distant relative, another of holy blood, their mission was to carry Naga's sacred blade, Falchion, to safety - the Fire Emblem itself was already lost. The group set to sea, searching for a new place to call home. Eventually, they came upon the island nation of Carcina. In their desperation, and with the element of surprise, the Ylissians quickly surrounded the capital Antea. After months of prolonged siege, Grima's Voice was forced to surrender the city and flee with Flamberge and the Shadow Emblem. He reestablished a new capital in a southern merchant city, Tartarus. Meanwhile, the Ylissians carved a new nation for themselves: Valeria. The Exalt's relative refused the offer of leadership, choosing instead to establish a council of bishops, led by their chosen archbishop. The Exalted bloodline faded from its position of power, yet ever continued to serve the worshipers of Naga from within the Valerian army.
For two hundred years, the countries of Carcina and Valeria went through a cycle of war and peace. One nation would attack, lives would be lost, treaties signed, borders re-drawn, and the two nations would drop back to lick their wounds. During one such period of tumult, the small nation of Meridia budded from western Carcina. Meridia remained neutral in the wars to come, and neither Valeria nor Carcina paid them much attention. However, this tiny country became the center of a cataclysm which soon threatened the world. A small group of summoners used a long-forbidden tome, the Goetia, to summon a demon lord, a fearsome dragon with dominion over the dead. At the same time, their well-placed agents in the governments of both Carcina and Valeria began unleashing a web of lies and blackmail. As they used the power of the demon lord to revive the dead and set them upon the living, they simultaneously drew both Valerian and Carcina into an ill-timed war.
A young girl from the unimportant Valerian town of Hearthside bore witness to the horrors of the undead monsters, the Risen. Her village was destroyed, and her parents slain. The last-known bearer of Exalted blood, a knight named Rain, saved the young girl. Under Rain's guidance, the girl proved herself on the battlefield time and again, eventually helping to save Antea from Carcina's attack. The young girl, now one of Valeria's elite Holy Knights, was given command of a small group of soldiers and served as the vanguard for Valeria's counterattack. With the girl's leadership, the combined armies of Valeria and Meridia quickly captured Tartarus. It was there the girl met the current Hand of Grima, King Paen. She was ordered to execute him.
A Valerian tactician, Doran, appeared at the last moment and revealed Meridia's deception. The girl, now branded a traitor, was forced to flee. With Valeria's army busy in Carcina, a large, organized attack by Risen threatened Antea. With Paen's help, the girl was able to save Valeria's archbishop, Saul. Together, they all fled across the sea to the desert nation of Terranus, a loose collection of rich city-states. In Terranus, the group found a school of mages who had long served as guardians of the Fire Emblem, as well as several other holy weapons and tomes. With the Fire Emblem reunited with its rightful owner, and some knowledge of the demon lord they faced, the group returned to their home island.
Doran, Rain, and Saul managed to recover Falchion from the ruins of Antea. At the same time, June and Paen freed Tartarus from the grips of the Meridian army. Paen recovered Flamberge, and the group turned their sights on Meridia. Reuniting at the border, the group pressed on to Meridia's capital. With the united blades of Naga and Grima, they launched a risky attack against the one controlling the demon lord. The girl sacrificed herself, allowing Paen to land a killing blow. As he died, the madman did not reveal his motivations. He left them with naught but a cryptic warning: "This changes nothing. You only delay the inevitable." The girl survived her grievous injuries, but still bears a massive scar.
After the battle, Saul and Paen swore to bring their nations closer together to prevent such a tragedy from occurring again. That was just over twenty years ago. Centuries of blood can't be erased so easily, but Paen and Saul's earnest desire to make peace is slowly spreading. As for the young girl, she eventually married King Paen and bore two children. The flames of war will soon rise to again threaten the world, but this is a night of celebration...
The exhausted queen of Carcina lies back, cradling her newborn son. Her husband takes a seat beside her, their two-year-old daughter in his arms. The couple share a contented smile as their little Lily reaches out to her crying brother. "It's a boy..." June says weakly. "So... What's this big secret name you've picked out...?"
"Rand." Paen embraces his wife. "A brave name for my brave little son."
"Rand..." June echoes. "And Lily. I love it... My beautiful, wonderful children..."
~ June, Verdant Queen of Carcina ~
The protagonist of SoS. A young farmer who united two warring countries against the Risen hordes. A crafty tactician with a kind heart, she makes allies easily. Married to Paen.
~ Paen, Dark King of Carcina ~
The king of Carcina, Hand of Grima, and Husband of June. A brand on his shoulder marks him as a descendant of Medeus, though his family's ability to transform was lost long ago. He is the one responsible for speaking for the lingering spirit of the slain Fell Dragon. He has a reputation as a cruel and cold-hearted -though honorable - leader, but those close to him know it is merely a mask to hide his soft, caring side.
