Note to any new readers: Seasons of Sorrow is a CYOA started on gamefaqs.com, migrated over to CYOA-verse. You don't need to read it to vote or anything, but expect to be confused. I have archived the story (minus the non-story posts), and it is available to read here:
www.fanfiction.net/s/10382053/1/Seasons-of-Sorrow-A-Fire-Emblem-CYOA
There are two mechanics unique to this CYOA, so far as I know. First, elixers. Elixers are serving as extra lives, so to speak. A character, when killed, has a short window to be revived with an elixer, provided you have one in your inventory (you also have the Aum staff, but it is currently unavailable). Secondly, X-supports. They function similarly to S-supports, changing the epilogue, but do not imply marriage or babies (I can confirm for long-term readers: a sequel IS in the works).
====General Summary====
---------Locations---------
Valeria: A small, frigid country to the north, and the main character's home. It is a mining country, relying on trade with Carcina for much of its food. It is the home of the Holy Knights, and is clearly devoted to Naga. Its capital is Antea.
Hearthstone: A small farming settlement in southern Valeria. One of the first destroyed by the Risen.
Trine: A Valerian trading city just north of the border, and a major command post for the Holy Knights. A short distance from Hearthstone, the survivors were evacuated here.
Voluth: A small mining town in Valeria. Bandits forced its villagers into a mine and sealed it. Despite the Holy Knights' intervention, most were killed by Risen.
Carcina: Immediately to the south of Valeria, Carcina is relatively warm and large, though it is still a small nation compared to most. It is a largely agrarian state. Most of its population worships the long-dead Grima. Its capital is Tartarus.
Meridia: A tiny oligarchy to the west that recently won independence from Carcina. Its capital is Altos.
Terranus: A large, sand-covered country across the eastern ocean. Its capital was dissolved long ago, and it is held together by a league of merchant cities.
Sefa: A large forest on the border of Valeria and Carcina. Several abominations dwell within its trees, though the forest's guardian keeps them largely in-check.
------------Plot-----------
The small town of Hearthstone, reeling after an attack by bandits, was destroyed in an attack by reanimated corpses shortly after. Some of the villagers, including June, chose to work for Valeria's Holy Knights as mercenaries. This was only a temporary measure, as increasingly frequent Risen attacks were interrupted by a full-on invasion from the neighboring Carcina. Antea managed to repel the attack, then launched a counterattack. 800 Valerian troops, joined shortly by 200 Meridian knights, cut their way through Carcina's defenses to sack the capital of Tartarus. June's team discovered the war was the result of a long-term conspiracy by the small country of Meridia. Most escaped while some hurried to rescue the Archbishop, barely escaping an attack on Antea. Within a few hours, both capitals had fallen into the enemy's hands. June's team then escaped across the sea to Terranus, recovering the Fire Emblem and the Goettia tome, gaining insight into the enemy's supernatural allies. June's team now sets its sights for home, planning to recover the Falchion and its counterpart, Flamberge. They have split into two teams. Doran's team has completed its mission and is well on its way to Meridia's borders, while June's team is fighting to recover Tartarus.
---------Characters--------
June (Free Knight): A girl from the village Hearthstone. After Hearthstone's destruction, she found herself working as a mercenary for the Holy Knights, eventually being promoted into their ranks. After Horatio's betrayal, she was made a free agent, with the authority to command both Carcinan and Valerian forces. She uses axes, lances, and bows, and rides her horse, Marth. During a showdown with the ghost of a dragon, she accepted the legendary axe Armads.
Rowan (Soldier): June's father. Killed by a behemoth risen in chapter 4X: Into Darkness.
Rain (Pegasus Lord (promoted great lord)): A Holy Knight and commander of a small squadron of pegasus knights, serving in Trine. While she considers herself motherly, she hates being reminded of her age. She fell for her long-time friend, Holland. She is part of a branch family descended from Ylisse's Exalts. Though she hid it for years, she now wears her brand with pride and has recently taken up the holy blade Falchion.
Bud (Warrior): June's childhood friend. Large but soft-spoken, he grew up hunting with his bow, but now fights with an axe, as well. His family was killed in the Hearthstone massacre. Choosing to follow June, he eventually married Wendy. After the war, they plan to rebuild Hearthstone alongside Haley and Ferris. He recently relieved a bandit gang of the legendary bow Nidhogg.
Haley (Paladin): Enthusiastic and excitable, Haley is one of the most approachable members of June's group. She was originally one of the pegasus knights under Rain's command. She constantly finds herself looking out for others' well-being. During a battle for June's heart, she fell in love with her competitor, Ferris, and the two were married shortly after.
Wendy (Manticore Rider): The second member of Rain's squad and an expert on animal care, Wendy constantly finds herself scolding Haley. Though she was a bit cold at first, she has been opening up to other members of June's group. After her marriage to Bud, she changed her plans to stay on as a knight, realizing how much she'd enjoy life on a farm. She found an illegally-traded manticore, and freed it. Despite concern from several others, she now rides it into battle.
Doran (Leader (tier-3 tactician)): The commander of the Holy Knight garrison at Trine. After Carcina's invasion, he was captured and taken to Tartarus for reasons unknown. Disorganized but capable of creating plans on the fly, his booming voice carries his orders over a wide distance. He is a long-term friend of Holland and Rain.
Lane (Merc): A claymore-wielding mercenary who forced herself into Cecil's group. Killed when she fell off Walt's horse in Chapter 6: Invasion.
Ferris (Champion (tier-3 hero)): A mercenary under Cecil's employ, he joined to help provide for his family. He loves to nap, though he isn't as off-guard as he may seem. Always looking for a sparring match and quick to help an ally improve, he seems a perfect match for his wife, Haley. Currently wields Ragnell.
Alyssa (Whisper): An orphan from Voluth, she grew up alongside Jessup and Syrene. She joined with the bandits attacking Voluth under the promise that no villagers would be hurt - June snapped her out of her delusions. Her caution and her skills at staying unnoticed have made her an invaluable resource for June's group, letting her gather information or get the drop on enemies. She married her long-time friend, Jessup. She also learned the hard way that capes can become a hazard.
Jessup (Archsage): A young boy from Voluth, he grew up on the streets under "Ali's" protection; while she became calloused, he became more of a coward. He eventually took to studying healing magic, hoping to support her however he could. He escaped the Voluth massacre to carry word to Trine. He made an oath that he'd become stronger, until he was able to protect her, or at least stop being such a burden, and the two were married. They intend to start an orphanage with their friend Syrene.
Syrene (Hero): The final member of Voluth's would-be street gang, Syrene was the one to find money through entirely honest means, doing odd jobs around town. She was locked in Voluth's mine, barely escaping with her life. Her odd speech mannerisms make her a bit hard to understand, but that didn't stop Agni from proposing. She received the knife Baselard as a wedding gift.
Agni (Templar (tier-3 war monk)): A wandering fire mage from Terranus, he was on his pilgrimage required for his promotion to sagedom when Voluth was attacked. He stood by Syrene, barely fending off Risen attacks until help arrived. He has difficulty with Valeria's language, making communication with his wife, Syrene, even more difficult. He was gifted with the fire tome Forblaze.
Dan (Griffon Rider): A traitor. He defected from Carcina to warn Valeria. Pursuers forced him to crash-land around Trine, but June's group took him in; his warning gave Antea time to reinforce itself. Gruff and awkward, he gets along best with his wyvern, Shard. Claudia has been training him to be a more "proper" knight, including etiquette instead of just a moral code and combat training.
Walt (Guardian (tier-3 paladin)): A knight under Doran's command, and Jayce's partner. Despite his serious, dedicated nature, he tends to be a bit of a klutz - including letting a bael break his lance and impaling Doran during a training exercise. He still feels guilty about Lane's death. He is currently in a romantic relationship with Taika.
Jayce (Marshall): Walt's partner. Doesn't take life too seriously. After the war, he plans to retire to civilian life. His mount, currently sitting on the sidelines, is Joker.
Holland (Sentinel): A captain responsible for training new Holy Knight recruits in Antea. An older man, his beardstache is almost as intimidating as the rest of him. He graduated alongside Rain and Doran. Valeria's counterattack gave him a chance to reunite with his old friends, and eventually led to his marrying Rain.
Charlotte (Templar): The overall commander of the Holy Knights. She reports directly to the Archbishop himself. She volunteered to be left behind as the Archbishop fled from Antea. Somehow, she survived the Risen siege, and Doran's team rescued her while retreiving Falchion. Something isn't quite right with her, but she doesn't seem to be a threat to your group.
Saul (Shadow Knight (promoted dark knight)): The Archbishop of Antea. Though he wants to start rebuilding his country right away, he recognizes the threat the Risen pose, and knows that they must be dealt with before a lasting peace can come.
John (Saint): A young monk from Antea, and the son of one of the councilmen. As he was very sheltered, his teachers thought sending him alongside June's group would be a good chance to help him grow, aside from giving them a counter to Carcina's dark mages. Despite his initial apprehensions for Mary and her parents, he's now in an unofficial relationship with her. He and Mary learned to combine their light and dark spells with explosive results.
Taika (Thief Lord (tier-3 thief)): Another mage on a pilgrimage, she happened across Agni and decided to join up with his group. Her command of lightning resulted in her receiving the tome Dime Thunder, and her mastery of several languages means she has much more ease fitting in than Agni. A tease and a flirt, she somehow managed to fall for Walt.
Mary (Shadow Dancer (tier-3 dancer/dark mage)): The adopted daughter of Vine and Fumiko, she was rescued from village as a toddler after it was destroyed by monsters. In a constant war with her emotions, her father's training allows her to stay in control of her powers. Despite initial conflict, she managed to sway John's views of laguz and dark mages, and the two now form an unlikely pair; in addition, she was trained in the art of dance by Charon. She wields the tome Goettia. Paen has tasked her with becoming the new guardian of Sefa forest.
Vine (Bear): Mary's father, and the guardian of Sefa forest. Overwhelmed by Risen in Chapter 12: Dead of Night.
Fumiko (Ninetails (promoted fox laguz)): A white fox laguz who wields both magic and claws on the battlefield. Vine's widow, and Mary's adoptive mother. She was a victim of Carcina's laguz slave trade, until Vine attacked her captors and freed her. Her penchant for cleaning borders on the obsessive. Though her romance with Doran was blossoming, the retrieval of the Aum staff has made things extremely awkward.
Charon (Rogue): A traveling dancer born in Carcina. He joined June's group after he witnessed them save a town from the Risen. A bit of a womanzer, none of June's group have yet fallen for his charms.
Cynbel (Dread Fighter): A knight on loan from Meridia, he expressed interest in joining June's group after tales of their exploits in capturing the fort of Mala spread. He's happiest thinking or talking about his hometown or the rolling hills of Meridia, but he is resolved to see this war through, come what may.
Paen (Baron): The king of Carcina. A massive mountain of a man, nothing can cause his resolve to waver, even if some would question his morality or methods. He loves a good scrap, and can wield any weapon short of healing staves (though he could probably do some damage if he chose to try one). He's been in a foul mood ever since Horatio and Filo's schemes forced him to retreat from Tartarus, compounded by his oldest friend, Mihal, betraying him. June turned down his proposal, promising to give it some thought. He wields the shadow emblem, made from Grima's scales, and the lance Gae Bolg. He also has a few drops of Medeus' blood running through him, and can hear Grima's voice.
Claudia (Dracolord): Paen's shadow. A tall, pale woman, Paen took her in after her mother's death, and she now serves as his bodyguard with unerring loyalty. There's a strong tension between her and June, as Claudia sees her as a potential threat to Paen. She was captured in the attack on Tartarus, but was rescued by Dan, Paen, and June. After the fighting is over, she intends to propose to Dan.
Rosalin (Warrior): The Bloody Rose, an ex-pirate whose grounds include the ocean between Terranus and Carcina. After she went straight, her former crew tried to kill her; she escaped, and later returned to settle the score. After Doran hired her, the bounty on Paen and Saul's heads led to a mutiny, and her crew again tried to kill her - unsuccessfully. She had plundered the legendary axe Garm, and managed to retrieve it when her old first mate challenged her to a duel.
Cecil (Wanderer (promoted nomad)): The leader of a small band of mercenaries. Older and wiser than most of June's group, he adopts a fatherly figure, offering advice whenever possible. While attempting to rejoin with June's group, he came upon Lane's Risen self. His prefered weapon is now a large claymore.
Praven (Archsage): An old man and the head of a small temple hidden in Terranus' desert. He tasks himself with overseeing several ancient weapons, challenging any who would claim them with einherjar. Agni and Taika are two of his favorite pupils, and he is extremely concerned that neither could return to Terranus; coupled with how many of his students were killed by the Risen, he worries about the future of the temple.
Harrow (Wolf Priestess (promoted wolf laguz)): A priestess for a small wolf laguz pack from northern Terranus. She sensed the spreading taint of the Risen, and led her tribe to investigate. She didn't make it far before falling into Jeckel's hands, resulting in the rest of her tribe's death. Scared, confused, and alone, all she could think to do was follow June's group.
Zephyr (Taguel Rex (promoted taguel)): An enthusiastic young taguel rescued from laguz slavers. A recent recruit, little is known about him besides his air-headed, playful personality.
Drake (Fire Dragon): Another victim of the laguz slave trade, June rescued him from the group extorting Mihal. He chose to leave, and made his way northwest, flying right into a horde of Risen. He was mortally wounded, but rescued and revived by Doran's team. He chose to join them in order to stop the Risen, realizing the danger of searching for his tribe alone.
------------NPCs-----------
Horatio: A spy inside Valeria's high command, and the leader of its army. Alongside Charlotte, he answered directly to the Archbishop before revealing his true colors. He forced the counterattack against Carcina, claiming they were responsible for the Risen.
Filo: Horatio's subordinate and counterpart in Carcina's court. He took Claudia and the rest of Paen's elite guard as hostages, and forced the war with Valeria, claiming they were responsible for the Risen.
Ovid: A Carcinan knight who was killed for allying with the Valerian army in an attempt to save a small town.
Sarv/Marv: Two young men taken in by Rosalin when they were young boys. Marv was killed by bounty hunters looking to claim the reward on Saul and Paen. Rosalin left her ship in Sarv's care while she seeks revenge.
Jeckel: A monster from another world in the guise of a polite gentleman. His experiments led to the death of Harrow's tribe, and nearly cost June's life. Few are privy to his true intentions.
Mihal: One of Paen's oldest friends, the two spent several summers training and learning together. He was extorted to follow in his father's less-than-savory footsteps. He was arrested for crimes of slavery and smuggling.
Bune: After extensive study of the Goettia, Mary believes the one responsible for the Risen outbreak is a dragon named Bune. Little is known besides what the Goettia says about his abilities to summon undead and grant intelligence to his summoners.
------Current Chapter------
June's squad, accompanied by 50 elite Carcinan troops, have begun their attack to reclaim Tartarus. After an information-gathering mission went awry, Claudia was captured and scheduled for execution; they were able to determine that Horatio's command of the city was limited, and only the Meridian army remained. While the main force laid siege to the gate, Dan, Zephyr, June, Paen, Bud, and Wendy have dashed into the city center to rescue her. Thanks to a rebellion by Tartarus' civilians, the rescue attempt was successful. Thanks to Zephyr, June realized this was a trap in time to evacuate the civilians before they could be surrounded in the central plaza and barraged by catapault fire. June is now split from the rest of her team, commanding a small contingent of Carcinan guardsmen and one very young lancer. Claudia and Dan can be seen fighting pegasus knights above - not a contingent of the Meridian army. The final decision on gamefaqs. B2: Tell Sherry to stay close, and assist your wyvern riders.
