Kiran works diligently on the castle, but quickly finds that he's spending way too much time trying to get the little details right and forgoing having a solid base.  Maybe if he'd focused on one set of details and not both - or maybe if Buttons would pull his weight...  Ugh, he should've partnered with Natsumi, or maybe that weird girl.

"We lose," Buttons says.

"What?  We've still got plenty of time.  I mean, we never agreed on a time, or how to score anything, but...  Still!"

"No, we lose.  I'm voting for theirs.  It's friggin' sick."  Buttons points.

"...Oh, come on, man.  You traitor."

Their castle's... OK.  Not great.  But it's a demon head with 5 towers around it.  There's a moat of water in a star pattern.

"...OK, it is kinda cool..." Kiran admits.  "Alright, girls, you win."

"...Hey, it's time for lunch, right?  C'mon, Kiran.  I can't stay forever."  Buttons drags him away.  "See ya later, Gnat.  Leia."

"What was that about...?" Kiran asks once they're apart.

"Huh?  I'm just hungry.  And I do need to get home and do homework.  Natty asked me to join you guys tonight, so I've gotta get my work done this afternoon.  Oh, I tried to invite Somnis, too, but she never answered her phone.  If you see her, make sure to invite her, alright?"

"Gotcha."

The two eat Kiran's sandwiches.  They're very... edible.

"Hey, Kiran?  Why'd you invite me today?  Y'know, considering I didn't want to come."  Buttons ends the question very flatly.

(A) I was bored.
(B) Because you need the sun!
(C) No one else could come.
(D) We haven't spent much time together lately.
(E) Iunno.

"Because we haven't spent much time together lately," Kiran answers.

"But why the beach?  You know I don't care for it," Buttons says.  "We could've gone anywhere.  The library.  The graveyard.  You house.  Even the park would be more palatable..."

(A) Because I wanted to go to the beach.
(B) Because you need the sun!
(C) Because getting out of your comfort zone's important sometimes!
(D) Because I worry about you sitting inside all the time.
(E) Because I like to watch you suffer.
(F) (shrug)

"I just get worried about you sitting inside all the time. Alone. And growing ever paler," Kiran says.

"I'm black..." Buttons reminds him.

"That just makes it weirder! Seriously, getting some sun's good for your health. Come on, admit you had an OK time this morning."

"The ice cream was OK. And the sandwiches were tolerable. And I guess getting to see that demon castle was worth the trip. Fine. The great Buttons shall deign to acknowledge you!"

"...Great!" Kiran says. He ignores the other stuff.

Kiran heads home for now, then over to knock on Somnis' door.  Her mom is the one to answer it.  She's a brown-haired woman in her mid-30's.  She's wearing a button-down white shirt and a pair of simple jeans.  "Hi, Miss Double-E!  Is Somnis home?"

"Hm?  She hasn't been in since yesterday," Eleanor says.  "I woulda thought she would stop in this morning but she didn't...  She must have forgotten to charge her phone, too.  I'm so cross with her.  She's in a lot of trouble when she gets home."

"She hasn't been in since yesterday?"

"No, she said she was going to the mall with you and your little gang, then she'd sleep over at your place."

"..."

(A) Yes.  That is what happened.  But she left this morning without saying where she was going.
