"How exactly is he different?" Lily asks.  "What sort of man is he?  I've heard of him, of course, but I'd like to hear from someone who knows him personally."

Isana's mouth draws into a tight grimace.  "Very well.  I would say... in the few years I have known him-"

"How long is that?" Kurt interrupts.

"I came into his employee three years hence, though I had performed in his court a few times in the previous months," Isana continues, unperturbed.  "I would say the Great Khan was a... not a kind man, but neither cruel.  He was certainly not bloodthirsty enough to begin a war.  He was... jovial, though a bit short-tempered.  He enjoyed food, and music, and wine, and women."

"And now?" Lily asks.

"I have seen him take no enjoyment of anything in quite some time.  He has grown cold, and distant.  I have not seen a smile light his face but once in the last days before I fled, when I found him speaking with his... pet."  Isana spits the last word with a sharp disdain.

"His pet?" Kurt asks.

"...His favorite new adviser..." Isana explains.  She continues to kneel, fidgeting uncomfortably.

Lily is silent, patiently waiting for Isana to continue.  Isana starts to speak and stops hesitantly several times.  "I can't... tell you everything yet.  Someday, I'll be able to.  But for now, I'm worried...  I'm scared to say too much," she admits.  "I don't... want... to lead you to think anything wrong.  Let me... start by saying...  No matter what happens, you must remember - Regna Ferox is not your enemy.  Do you understand?"

Lily folds her arm.  "Not entirely," she admits.  "Not yet.  But I'll keep it in mind as you continue."

Isana nods.  "The new adviser...  She seemed to appear from nowhere.  She worked her way into the Khan's good graces with a few honeyed words, some sage advice, a few nice presents, all so she could come to manipulate him..."

"Like you're doing right now?" Kurt asks flatly.

Isana cocks her head and smirks at him.  "I offer no gifts, milord, nor mask my intentions.  And... any who dare to speak against her, to look into her past...  They tend to disappear.  And please understand that the Feroxi court is not what you are used to.  Anyone there has earned their place, one way or another, positions are not merely doled out by birth.  Ah...  I merely wish you to understand how difficult it would be to arrange for their disappearance.  I mean no offense, of course."

Lily waves dismissively.  "Continue."

"Yes...  Well...  I believe - no, I know this adviser is related to the woman trying to start a coup in Carcina, and the witch and manakete that attacked Sefa, and the assassin that tried to kill you in Trine," Isana says.  She nods gently.  "I know you've been investigating who those mercenaries with her were, Kurt.  They were her own troops."

"And how do you know all this?" Kurt demands.

Isana is silent.  She reaches up and begins fiddling with the clasp at her breast.  "I would... prefer to show this to Kurt in private, but I suppose, milady, if I saw your brand, it's only fair to show you mine."  She shifts her dressing to show a dark sigil over her heart.

Kurt's eyes snap open.  "That's...!"

Isana doesn't try to hide a mischievous smile at his surprise.  "The same mark you bear.  The mark given to those who hunt demons.  Your mother was not the only one chosen."

"I'm sorry.  Can someone explain?" Lily asks.

"This mark was given by an archdemon.  It grants us power, but at the cost of our own lifeforce.  Unlike Kurt, I choose to keep mine suppressed."  She turns to Kurt.  "I can teach you to control it, if you wish."

Kurt glares suspiciously.  "So...  This group.  What is their goal in spreading all this chaos?"

Isana covers herself and pulls a satchel from her waist.  She hands it and a parchment to Kurt.  "Please, step out and read that in private.  That should explain quite a bit.  I need to discuss something with Lily.  In private."  She smiles pleasantly and lets out a soft laugh.  "I suppose now I am handing out gifts, but I hope you accept my bribe."

Kurt looks to Lily for approval.  She notices the yearning in his eyes and gives him an approving nod.  He steps out immediately, leaving Lily and Isana alone.  She continues to kneel before the princess, giving Kurt a parting glance before bowing her head.  She waits a moment until a flash of light emanates from just outside the tent.  Lily looks out curiously, and rises to her feet to investigate.  She stops as Isana begins speaking softly.  "I'm sorry, Princess, that there's not more I can say just yet.  And I'm sorry there's nothing I can about what is about to transpire...  What next comes to pass is necessary for our victory.  I merely pray you will someday forgive me..."

Lily feels her fingers instinctively wrap around her knife's hilt.

"Please don't, Princess."  She reaches out and clutches Lily's other hand to her chest.  She looks up at her pleadingly.  "Please.  Will you trust me?"
