"Do you think we should wake her?" Vex asks softly as she rests her head in her beloved's lap, while he absentmindedly plays with her hair.
"No," Jet answers. "Let her sleep while she can. She's clearly exhausted, and we'll have to move on soon anyway..."
"Who do you think she is?" Vex asks. "She's... Special, don't you think? I don't know what it is about her... But I feel so safe when she's near... So warm. She reminds me of my mother. Do you think she has children? She certainly seems to act like a mother."
Jet laughed a bit, and smiled. "You're rambling a bit, my love."
She turns in his lap to look up at him, adoration shining in her eyes. "Am not."
His smile widens. "Are too."
He brushes a bang away from her face and leans down to kiss her, and Vex sighs happily. He pulls back and the pair lay in silence for some time.
"Jet?" She asks softly, breaking the silence. "When we get home, after all this is over... We can finally settle down, right? Start a family?"
He smiles, though she doesn't miss the sadness in his eyes, even though he tries to hide it. "Of course. Juan can take over as Head Hunter, and I can focus more on my duties to you. I also want to reestablish our connections with the other tribes. It's high time our people were united again, I think."
Vex sucks her breath in sharply. "That won't be easy Jet, even for you."
He sighs. "I know. But I have to try. I think Chief Garth will listen to me, at least. We may not have seen each other since I was a boy, but he was a good friend to my grandfather and a very honorable and wise man."
Vex beams and reaches up to gently cup his cheek in her hand. She playfully nipped his chin. "If anyone can do it, you can. And I'll do whatever I can to help. But this isn't something we can just do on a whim either. We'll need to plan carefully."
He wraps his arms around her and holds her tightly against him. "Hm-hm. But that can wait til later. For now, I just want to enjoy spending time with the woman in my arms."
Vex grinned. "Now that sounds like a good plan."

Bump. I'll be updating today. I would update right now, if I weren't too tired to write. However, I've also started to resume work on another project, and it's one I'd like to be able to have ready soon, so between that and the RPs, and life in general, UB still won't be on a good schedule again, unfortunately. Deciding to give Jet and Vex some privacy, and needing to be alone with your thoughts for a bit, you go for a brief walk around the lava fields. Maybe it wasn't the brightest idea, but the heat didn't bother you, the lava couldn't harm you, and the oversized lizards lounging about gave you a wide berth. Probably because they sensed who the real giant lizard was. And it wasn't whatever that was lurking deep beneath the crimson waves.
Without realizing it, you end up back at the stone monument dedicated to Origin. Hesitating a bit, for some reason you can't explain, you kneel before the monument once again and close your eyes. Some things were starting to become clear now. And with every passing moment, your powers gradually returned. There was still that pain, that shame, that sorrow, whenever you thought about your past, about your time as... As Ephidel's plaything, but it was more of a dull ache now, instead of the overwhelming agony it was before. You had something more important than your own pain to focus on, a goal that gave you strength, but... It was more than that.
This place... It was healing you. And you were beginning to understand why.

A few minutes later, you heard footsteps approaching from behind you. Opening your eyes and rising to your feet, you turn and smile as Vex and Jet approach, hand in hand.
"Ready to go?"
They nod, almost in unison. "But first," Vex says, taking out what appeared to be a charm of some sort from her pack. "I want you to have this. It's an old good luck charm I used to carry around with me as a girl, and still do sometimes... It was a gift from my mother."
Your expression softens towards the young huntress, but you shake your head. "Thank you Vex, but I can't accept something so precious... Besides, you're the one I should be thanking. Both you and Jet. You're the ones accompanying me on this crazy mission, when you still don't even know what it's for."
Vex sighs, then to your surprise, she forcibly takes your hand and shoves the charm into it. "I swear, the resemblance is almost uncanny," she mumbles beneath her breath.
She shakes her head, then smiles. "You remind me so much of my own mother, it's freaky. I don't have any real memories of my childhood... They're all hazy and fragmented. I remember bits and pictures of my mother, but that's it... Just bits of her personality, her warmth, sometimes her voice... Things like that. I can't even remember her face. I want you to have it, Nagi. I think it's the closest I'll ever come to giving it back to my mother. So stop being stubborn and just accept it."
You finally cave in and accept Vex's gift with a smile, fastening the charm securely around your neck. "Alright. Thank you, Vex."
She smiles again, suddenly blushing slightly. "R-right. You're welcome. Now come on, enough standing around. It's hot as hell in here, and it's not getting any cooler."
As she and Jet turn to walk away, expecting you to follow, you don't move, suddenly overcome by a strange nostalgia, and a great sorrow. Unbidden, tears fill your eyes, and you have no idea why. You wipe them away in frustration, and your eyes fall upon the new charm around your neck. You blink a few times, startled to realize you recognize the charm. It was a wood carving of the goddess Gaia, identical to the very charm you had carved for Ethan, all those many centuries ago. It was identical even down to the chip in the lower right corner. But how...?
You look up at Vex, and for the first time, you notice her ears. They were slightly more pointed than normal.
"Nagi? Are you coming? Hurry it up, I'm dying here!"
"Right, I'm coming."

"Aww come on!" Vex shouts angrily, stomping her foot in frustration, as the three of you stand before a collapsed passage, buried beneath tons of rock and hardened lava.
"I'm guessing this was the passage you mentioned, Jet?" You ask rhetorically, a trace of amusement lining your voice. Of course it wouldn't be that easy. This is a test.
Jet nods wearily, sighing in resignation. "Yes, and unfortunately, it's the only safe route to the volcano's heart. At least the only one I am aware of."
"That is because you do not know where to look, my child."
You actually aren't surprised to hear your mother's voice. She was always guiding you, showing you the way when you were lost. You turn to look behind you, and find her spirit standing by the stone monument. She smiles lovingly, then vanishes, and a gentle breeze blows through the hellish caverns, like a morning breeze on a cool Spring day.
Neither Vex nor Jet seem to notice, but you do... And with a smile, you understand. "This way," you say suddenly. "I know another way."
Both Vex and Jet turn to you, but before they can say anything, you're already running back towards the monument again. Your two companions hurry to catch up, and by the time they do, you're already kneeling in front of the monument and offering a prayer to your father.
Jet starts to say something, but Vex gently elbows him and shushes him. You reach out to press your hand against the monument, and as soon as you do, it hums to life. Glowing blue lines rapidly spread across the stone surface, and the ground begins to shake. Jet gasps and steps back, while Vex merely tightens her grip on his hand and smiles. The giant lizards on the nearby bank suddenly dive into the lava.
The monument begins to rise out of the ground, higher and higher, and the other monuments begin to rise as well. The lava rolls and parts, as the ground begins to shift, making way for an enormous stone platform rising up out of the lava. As if in reaction to its appearance, the mountain finally begins to wake.
Hundreds, no thousands of glowing blue lines shot up the sides of the cavern, illuminating the once impenetrable abyss above, revealing dozens more stone platforms of varying sizes seemingly floating in the air. And as the blue lines streaked past them, those platforms activated too, until everything was connected.
"What... What is this?" Vex breathed in awe.
"The Temple of Time," you answer quietly, smiling widely. "This mountain was never a shell, or even a volcano. It is a temple built by the ancients to worship that which is the Origin of all. And the creature you encountered is the guardian of this temple, awakened after countless millennia, likely due to my presence on the island. When you said this mountain was sacred, Jet... You were right. You just didn't know how sacred."
You turn to your newfound companions, watching their stunned expressions. Jet is the first to speak. "You said that creature- the guardian, woke because of your presence here... And the way the monument responded to your touch, as if it recognized you... Nagi... Who are you?"
"A friend," you reply simply. "That should be enough for now, shouldn't it? I promise, I'll explain everything in time. Are you two coming? You won't have to worry about the heat so much anymore."
Jet returned your smile and nodded. "Something tells me you don't need a guide now... But I still owe you for before, and this could be my best chance to learn more about my people. I vow to help you see your mission through to the end, to the best of my abilities. So yes, I'm coming."
"And I wouldn't miss this for the world," Vex agrees. "Not every day a girl comes across the adventure of a lifetime. Ready when you are."
With a subtle nod, you press your hand against the monument again and close your eyes, and the platform begins to ascend.
I'm almost there... Sonia, Ehren... It won't be long now.
You open your eyes and look over at Vex, smiling at her wide-eyed excitement. You could see the glimmer now, the veil surrounding her, everything you had been blind to before... And you knew that she would never be the wiser. She would never know.
But that's for the best... Right Ethan?
