The idea here is to take place 150 years after Shippuden with modern civilian technology and 80s-era weaponry excluding computer-guided weaponry. Essentially, the countries are the same, but ninja villages have become more common and less focused on being ninjas and more about being large cities. Numerous smaller countries such as Oto no Kuni (Land of Sound) are trying to become more recognized, and ninjas in general are being more phased out. Modern ninja are also adapting to the change in technology, creating new styles of combat such as Shōjujutsu (Gun Techniques).
This RP is designed to give a large range of creativity, and has both a large focus on the effects of industrialization of communities and the conservation of tradition. Advanced technology and mystic secrets are both employed, and there will be a greater focus on monsters from Japanese mythology.
Taking place 150 years after the Fourth Shinobi War, all of the Five Great Ninja Villages and many large cities have become near-modernized, with Ninjutsu becoming rarer as modern weaponry is being conceived. Due to the decrease in ninjas coming from the larger villages, smaller villages are becoming more prominent and sticking to the past, producing small crops of high-quality ninjas.
Important new location: Jigokugakure (Hell village), the ninja village of Youkai no Kuni (Land of Youkai). Here, spirits known as youkai wander about, and the Jigokugakure ninja base almost all of their jutsu off of the youkai, having learned to tame, wield, and slay the spirits. The village features five head clans, each in possession of a jewel that an ancient, powerful youkai was sealed in, that young members of the main branch known as Onmyoji are given so that they may absorb some of the youkai's power and develop their own demonic form before passing the jewel on to the next in line. These five Kodai Youkai are: Wanyudo (Fire), Daitengu (Wind), Bake-Kujira (Water), Raiju (Lightning), and Daidarabotchi (Earth).
Here's a template for characters. So far, we might be starting with some Chunin Exams, so if you could balance your character with all of this in mind, that'd be great. Name (Clan then Personal): Gender: Age: Village: Appearance: Biography: Equipment: Jutsu:
Note: Almost anything and everything is subject to change. Through discussion, we may decide to change up a group or mechanic, and this post will be changed to reflect these decisions.

Example character that I'm using. Name (Clan then Personal): Doroki Tamari Gender: Female Age: 16 Village: Kirigakure
Appearance: Red, almost orange hair in a Dutch braid, hazel eyes, and a pale complexion. Her face features a natural smile, and her eyes barely seem open. Wears a plain black, long-sleeved shirt and jeans, open-toed sandals, and pinstriped bracers and greaves that go under her jeans. Has two belts, one across her chest over her right shoulder, and one around her waist, each with a strap for her to place her blade on.
Biography: Born in Kirigakure to a ninja mother and a blacksmith father, Tamari opted for the notably more successful path of the ninja. Her mother was a hunter-nin, which indirectly lead to Tamari being fond of the game hide-and-seek as a child and developing a fondness for hiding and seeking in life, which her mother described as "fierce". When she graduated from the academy, her father gave her a blade he made, Kakushihebi, one of his masterpieces. Her father and mother disagree on whether she should aim to be a hunter-nin or one of the Seven Mist Swordsmen, but Tamari thinks it would be nice to try both. Thanks to her mother's training and her father's jolly nature and insistence on her being friendly with people, she acts friendly, but is quite cold and calculating on the inside, even blood-thirsty. Likes dead bodies (particularly the heads), her father's futomaki, and the rain.
Equipment: Kakushihebi: A sword designed hoping to rival the blades used by the Seven Mist Swordsmen. It has a simple design, with an ergonomic handle made so that one's hand can touch the bottom of the blade while still holding the hilt. The blade is a meter long, and has an abrupt end to its edge, making it unable to stab, only slice. However, the blade is thick, and conceals a gun barrel designed to channel the user's chakra through it, for the sake of firing after the top slides open (also done using chakra). Despite its intended use, one can also open the top and release a steady, controlled stream of chakra to give the blade the ability to stab. Kunai and shuriken: Like many other Kirigakure ninja, Tamari uses special kunai and shuriken with curved edges.
Jutsu: Substitution Jutsu- Can quickly replace oneself with a block of wood or similar object as a scapegoat for an attack. Transformation Jutsu- Can disguise oneself as other people or objects. Can fool people at a glance, but doesn't hold up well. Manipulated Shuriken Technique- Using the strings attached to the weaponry, the trajectory can be altered mid-air. Body Flicker Technique- Is able to concentrate high amounts of Chakra in order to gain a large burst of speed in order to cross short distances. Hiding in Mist Technique- A specialty of the ninja from Kirigakure, where one causes a mist to spring forth by lifting up some water from either a pre-existing source or expelled from their mouth, then goes in and out of sight at will from within the pearly-white realm. The mist's thickness is controlled by the amount of chakra kneaded into it. Water Release: Hiding in Water Technique- The user blends in with water to be undetected by the enemy, similar to the Earth Release: Hiding in Rock Technique. Water Release: Gunshot- The user kneads chakra, and converts it into water, and then spits it out in the form of condensed balls. While this is a water release technique, it can still be employed someplace where no water is available, which is a great advantage. Wind Release: Great Breakthrough- This is a relatively simple technique that creates a sudden gust of wind, but its scale varies greatly depending on the user. The wind from the squall can blow away all things in the user's line of sight. Tamari cannot use it at a high-level, however, and is only capable of slowing objects that are moving at a decent pace and moving light objects. Wind Release: Wind Cutter- Using their chakra or a ninja tool such as a war fan to manipulate or else create an external source of wind, the user can create a single, or several blades of wind which are capable of slicing through their target with ease. Wind Release: Gale Palm- A simple technique that when the user’s hands are clapped together, wind is compressed and transformed into a powerful gale. This technique, when used as an isolated attack has the power to easily knock over a human, though the true value comes from using it together with projectile weapons like shuriken or kunai to further propel them. Earth Release: Hiding Like a Mole Technique- This technique changes earth into fine sand by channeling chakra into it, allowing the user to dig through it like a mole. This effect goes around the body (not just the hands), making it just large enough for a person to move through. The user can pinpoint where they are, despite being underground, by sensing the magnetic forces. They can also sense what is happening on the surface and use that information to launch a surprise attack on the enemy. One can also hide deep in the ground, escaping to a depth where the enemy can't reach. It also appears that after digging, the ground can be returned to its original state, leaving no trace of where the user entered the earth.

When are you and Golurk trying to start this, Doug? If it's after December 31st, I should have time to participate. Although I'd seriously need to brush up on my knowledge since I only reached Ep 52 of Shippuden, and I don't even remember the first series...

Ha! As if I know! You'd have to ask Golurk, he's the driving force, I'm just apparently one of the most qualified to help. And I intend to provide some references to make things like character creation and understanding what happens easy. So if you give it at most a week then I should be able to compile enough links to provide you with an understanding of all the canon mechanics and places we're using.

We probably won't start this until after we get some more research and support.

Well I am down whenever everything gets started. So are the tailled demon beast still around or have they been dealt with?

They're still around, or at least we think they are. Epilogue was vague about what exactly happened to most of them, but Kyubi/Kurama and Hachibi/Gyuki are confirmed to still exist.

Considering if they were freed, then they have reformed again, and are walking the lands. I recall Kurama or one of the other characters explaining that's what happens.

Another example:
Name (Clan then Personal): So-en Miidera Gender: Male Age: 15 Village: Otogakure Appearance: Wearing layered garb similar to Jiraiya, though of a grey color, he stands slightly above average height and has mid-length black hair tied behind his head. His shoes are open-toed sandals with woven bottoms. He travels fairly light, but wears numerous scrolls on his hips for storing weapons in addition to wearing bells on his thighs and upper arms. There is also a tall thin bell slightly larger than the scrolls strapped on his back which he never seems to use. Biography: Born into the reformed village of Otogakure, one of the few villages which doesn't use that much advanced technology, the need for expert ninjas was great in order to increase the village's standing among the others to have the Land of Sound officially recognized among the other great Shinobi lands. Because of this, several children were groomed from a young age to become powerful ninja, and Miidera was among these, being born into a powerful ninja clan with an excellent Kekkei Genkai at the cost of incurable deafness. Though he showed little promise in standard Ninjutsus, he excelled at the unorthodox application of tools, which was a given due to his above average intelligence. After multiple failed attempts to excel in classes and increasing pressure from the village, he found the large bell which he carries around on his back on the ocean floor near the coast after a failed attempt at suicide by drowning due to depression caused by being unable to uphold his clan's and village's honor. In his would-be last moments, he hallucinated the bell speaking to him, convincing him that he should keep on living before his father appeared and saved him. After returning to the coast to retrieve the bell, he discovered a summoning scroll inside of it's hollowed area, signing a contract of blood with it before placing it back inside the bell, where it disappeared. Astonished at Miidera's increase in skill, he became one of the more powerful members of Otogakure's younger ninja teams. Whereabouts are currently unknown, as he decided to leave his village in order to train. Distrusts and/or fears women.
Equipment:
Hallucination Bells: These bells, when rung, produce a sound that permeates the ears of anyone nearby, causing them to hallucinate. These are often attached to senbon with wire and can be rung by light shaking. Warning Bells: Similar to the Hallucination Bells, these produce a loud piercing sound that can be easily heard. Senbon: Thin metal needles which are thrown. Miidera produces these from scrolls with bells and/or wire attached. Metal Rod: Long steel batons which are produced from scrolls. These are used for striking at close range with both precision and power. Marksman's Pistol: An old handgun with a wide barrel that fires a single lead bullet. Not really used for combat, but is a fast and easy way to attack an enemy. Wire String: Thin, elastic, and durable wire that is hard to see, this wire is used alongside senbon, however, it can be used on its own as a choking weapon or rope.
Jutsu:
Bell Summoning Technique: Temple bells are summoned using this space-time jutsu. Each bell has an emblem on it's front, ridges near the bottom, and round bumps near the top. The strength of these bells is directly proportional to the chakra proficiency of the user. Benkei: The middle in size of the summoned bells, this one is about the size of a large wardrobe and has a long crack forming from the base in addition to being completely hollow Used as a bludgeoning weapon, it's very heavy and durable, and upon being struck, it releases a broken and dull sound. This one is a dull copper tone. Toda: A pair of twin summoned bells, these are handheld and about the size of large maracas, complete with a protruding handle. Holding no pendulum like every summoned bell, these are vibrated through the release of Chakra, which makes a distinct high-pitched ringing, launching high-pressure blasts of air. These are an iron grey. Tenchi: The bell about the size of a large vase which Miidera carries on his back, this one seems to have no special properties beyond it's intense reflectivity. This bell is a mirror-like silver. Enryaku-ji: Twice the size of Benkei, this bell is suspended from a frame. The bell itself is very durable, and when struck, produces a deafening boom which shakes everything around it. This bell is a shining bronze. Hieizan: As large as a small apartment complex, it serves a simple purpose. Defensive in nature, this bell is near-indestructible and completely encompasses the user. The bell itself is very heavy, and nothing short of a Tailed Beast could lift it. This bell is an earthen green.
Kekkei Genkai: Onkyougan: A Dojutsu which turns the entire eye a dark grey, this allows the user to see and identify sound, even through solid objects. This can be used as a form of echolocation, though it only works within a cone of vision. As sound passes through an object, a ghost image of it's structure is presented, showing possible weak points and internal movement. This is supplemented by the fact that Miidera is already trained to notice sound and partially decipher it through skin.
Kekkei Genkai: Silence Jutsu: By focusing on someone with his Onkyougan, Miidera is able to render them incapable of hearing. The process is subtle but quick, so the temporary deafness may not be identified at first.
Substitution Jutsu: Can quickly replace himself with a block of wood or similar object which takes an attack for him.
Transformation Jutsu: Can disguise himself as other people or objects. Can fool people at a glance, but isn't very good at it.
Shadow Clone Jutsu: Miidera is able to create up to four clones of himself using this technique. Each clone is just as powerful, but can be easily dispersed by a strong attack.
Body Flicker Technique: Is able to concentrate high amounts of Chakra in order to gain a large burst of speed in order to cross short distances.
Wind Release: Light Breeze: About the only Nature Transformation he can do, this produces a slow gust of wind that is easily perceptible if paying attention. However, it's not readily noticeable but is strong enough to ring Warning and Hallucination Bells.
Bukijutsu: An advanced user of senbon, but he uses it more as a tool than a weapon, but a good user of the metal rods. Using them both defensively and offensively, he specializes in sweeping blows with a focus on footing. His skill with Benkei and Toda are of similar quality, but Benkei is a slow and cumbersome weapon while Toda is only useful for short-ranged strikes unless used for launching pressure blasts.
Manipulated Shuriken Technique: Using the strings attached to his Senbon, he can alter their trajectory mid-air.
Wire Coffin Technique: By concentrating Chakra into various wire strings, he can use them to wrap an opponent and entrap them, causing slight lacerations. He can then vibrate the wire rapidly to cause deeper wounds.
Genjutsu: Mostly as a supplement to his Hallucinatory Bells, Miidera can use basic Genjutsu to further the Bell's effects.

Remember, these characters are taking the Chunun exam, but since the quality of ninjas has risen as a necessity, your characters should be as powerful as late Part I/early Part II characters.

What Hiden?
Also, not everyone has to be a Chunin Exam taker.
Some can be Jonin-senseis and stuff.

Just need to clear something up before I post my (Rough draft) character sheet. Golurk, you said I could be one of the Onmyoji, correct? I've decided I want the Lightning one, Raiju. So, my character's name would be Raiju(Clan) and then personal... Yes? I just need to make sure Raiju is the correct clan name.

Raiju is the name of the youkai that the Onmyoji would use. The clan names haven't been decided, but would likely be something like Dendouheishi or Dendoutamashii for the lightning clan. Possibly Raijufuruu or Raijukodomo.

GX is using Raiju. I should have clarified that earlier. Aww... Well, that sucks. Big time. Is Wanyudo the Fire Onmyoji free? If so, I claim that.

Raiju is the only one that's claimed.
Each Kodai Youkai uses an upgraded, black version of their respective Chakra Nature like Blaze Release.

Well, I claim Wanyudo then. I still need to do a lot of research, though.

...I should've remembered Golurk mentioning GX's interest in Raiju. Dang. Somehow, I knew Wanyudo would be one of the first to go. Didn't expect Raiju though. I figure it won't be long before Bake-Kujira's gone. ...We should probably all take multiple characters like I recall people doing in Nova. 'Cause there're a LOT of groups here.
