It's best to take multiple characters over time. Develop each character, you know.

I know I want to join. I know I want to do something with lightning. But for the life of me I have no idea what I want my character to be or do. I was thinking of scrappy underdog but that seems too Naruto. Maybe person who is really smart but tries to hide it. But that sounds too much like Chickamorue.
Does anybody have any ideas????

Well, we're trying to avoid overlapping.

But Golurk, there are only so many elements. And GX and I aren't even normal Ninjas, but Demon Lords. So why can't he be a ninja who specializes in lightning? Or maybe wind with a lightning element to it?
Ya should be trying to recruit more people, not giving them reasons to turn away.

Yee, I'm with Neo on this, since X doesn't seem to be wanting to be an Onmyoji. Well, X, if you really want lightning, there's a few things that can be done with it. First you've got the whole Chidori/Lightning Blade style of using it, which is to use it as a somewhat flexible cutting force, then you've got the Kumogakure style for it which uses it as raw destructive force. There's also the Boltswords that belong to the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist. Lightning also combines with water-nature chakra to make Storm Release, which basically uses lasers. Alternatively, you could go for general applications of Lightning Release (which there aren't too many of, but Lightning Shadow Clones certainly give an initial idea), which would actually be fairly potent against technologically-inclined ninja.

Well, it's still a lightning specialist.
You don't have to specialize in an element anyways.

Also, the idea is to keep from having redundancies.
In the words of the famous John Stewart: "We don't need two stretchy guys!"

Somebody's bound to end up wielding the Boltswords though, and the same for Storm Release. Not to mention the Raikage is effectively guaranteed to use Lightning Armor. As long as he makes it unique, I don't really see a problem with it.
Though, X, don't you already have Brook in LOTUS to use for electric shenanigans?

Redundancy is inevitable, especially in this kind of RP, where there are a limited number of options. The only reason to limit types would be to control the number of Onmyoji, for obvious plot and gameplay reasons. However, this does not apply to normal characters. If you limit normal characters as well, then you are essentially limiting your own RP to a maximum number of 1 participant per element. And Stewart's words do not apply in this case. While two characters may wield the same element, they may and likely will have drastically different fighting styles and personalities. There is absolutely no reason we cannot have duplicate typings, only duplicate Onmyoji, which we don't. I see no problem with X using Lightning.

Well, when two PCs have it, it's a bit different. That's like having another major character whose specialty is Shadow Clones in the show.

Well, when we only have five participants, you shouldn't have two who have similar abilities.

Well, when two PCs have it, it's a bit different. That's like having another major character whose specialty is Shadow Clones in the show. But this isn't the show. And Shadow Clones is a technique, not an element. No two PCs will have the same signature technique, but there is no reason there cannot be multiple ninjas of each element. Like there is in the show. Your argument is invalid and unnecessary.

So the abilities just WON'T be similar. Onmyoji are pretty unique, and while it's hard to do unique things with lightning, it's not impossible. And while we won't have a lot of characters early on, we're gonna need a lot of these characters eventually.

Well, when we only have five participants, you shouldn't have two who have similar abilities. And thus you prevent anyone from joining in the future, and hinder creativity to boot, which will cause you to lose what few participants you have.

That would help enforce creativity by opening up to multiple different paths.
We haven't even had a tech ninja.
When there's only a few PCs, you should expand on a number of different fronts. Use dissimilarity.

It doesn't really enforce creativity. It's not opening up more paths, it's just closing off one. I certainly agree that it would be better to have people do radically different things, but just using lightning isn't going to be too similar, considering the many ways we could use it, ESPECIALLY if X goes for a more tech-inclined ninja.
