"Yeah, well he thought wrong. If he won't tell me what he wants, he can get it himself."
Archer looks uncertainly at you, then sighs. "Look, the tavern is the front of a smuggling ring in Bastion. They smuggle anything that the nobility can pay for, that can't be easily obtained in Bastion. You know, Ley-crafted silks, unregistered firearms, the occasional exotic fruit. However, before you joined us, a few months ago, we intercepted a shipment of theirs which should have contained a small fortune's worth of firearms, actually contained a case of Lylitite."
Your eyes narrow. Lylitite is metal or stone that has been exposed to leylines for an extended period of time. They are an excellent source of energy for powering devices when electricity can only last for so many hours in a day, and under the right conditions, quite explosive. More troubling, it's also the key to augmenting humans with the power of alchemy, living weapons of incredible potential.
"That is interesting. So you're saying if you found one shipment, there's probably more? And you want me to find a clue as to where they're keeping it all?"
"Actually," a third voice interjects, "you're looking for the buyers." Lancer enters the dilapidated hallway, gingerly stepping over broken glass and wooden frames. The man you know only as Lancer, is not the man you would expect to head a cell of a revolution. He was well dressed first of all, better than any outer ringers you've met, if he even was from the outer ring. However, on either side of his sharp nose are two, hungry eyes, so brown they're almost black, which now studied her measuredly. "Listen Strider," he says meeting your eyes with a cold stare. His beady black eyes send shivers down your spine, but you meet his gaze with your own. He holds your stare for a beat before continuing, "I don't know who you were before we took you in, nor do I care. What I do know is that you're a damn good thief, but you're part of something bigger now. You're part of a team, and we all need to do our part. And for some of us," he says, turning to look directly at Archer, "that means getting a hold on our tongues."
Archer visibly reddens, trying to look even smaller than he already is. Lancer seems to take this as submission from him, because he turns back toward you. "Now," he says, "the reason why I I'm keeping you in the dark about this job is because I can't actually describe to you what it is you're actually looking for. It would be a set of papers, or small book perhaps, written with names, and numbers, but the one we want, I couldn't describe it to you. I was hoping that you could be my eyes and ears tonight, so I could find the ledger through you."
"That isn't going to happen," you reply curtly. "That device is way too noisy and unpredictable. I can't just talk to someone while searching through someone's home. If they wake up, I have a good chance of walking away with nothing."
"She said you ought to go yourself," Archer mumbles, earning a glare from you. Lancer though, chuckles heartily, puzzling you.
"Yes, perhaps I should," he smiles, "but don't you think that I'm a little past my prime for doing that sort of thing. Stealing is a job for younger bones. Archer will accompany you."
You open your mouth to protest, but Strider holds up a hand to stop you. You glance to your right happy to find that Archer is feeling the same discomfort you do.
"Do you know what you're looking for, boy?"
"I think so," Archer nods, cautiously at first, then with confident vigor. "I remember what it looked like."
"Good, Lancer nods. I trust that you two will be ready to hit the Grail Tavern by tomorrow. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a few errands to run still today."

Lancer walks away without another word. You let him, smiling inwardly at the concession he granted you. A month ago, you wouldn't have risked seeming so inflexible, but today felt like a day to test the boundaries of his trust in you. So far, he seems to trust you just enough to your job. A start if nothing else.
"Well," sighs Archer, "I guess we're stuck together, then."
"You make it sound like I'm such bad company," you reply, raising an eyebrow. Archer's face turns red,and you release a burst of laughter.
This seems to relax him, so you turn serious once more. "If you'll be tagging along with me tonight you're going to need some clothes that don't rustle so much."
"What's wrong with what I'm wearing?" He complains, gesturing down to his clothing. You give him a cursory glance: a mottled brown overcoat, it would rustle as he moved; a pair of tattered jeans, they would constrict his movement too much for her taste, and his stained, white (only in the loosest of terms) T-shirt, it would reflect the light of a lantern or candle, losing the element of stealth. Finally, you glance down at his combat boots, ready to clomp around a battlefield, not a robbery.
"Everything," you say simply. "You might as well be shouting for the guards in a get up like that.
"What would you rather have me wear? That getup of your's you call clothing. No thanks."
"This," you say gesturing down at your own clothing. You wear a simple black cotton blouse and shorts, and leather moccasins, perhaps ready to go to the most casual funeral ever. The only notable thing you wear is your tool belt, designed to easily slip on and off, it easily all of your equipment, small, situational tools for disabling all kinds of locks and contraptions, "is probably the best outfit you could wear. Unfortunately, I don't just carry around multiples of this outfit for people to use, so I'm going to have see if I can snag some suitable clothes for you."
"And when you say snag..."
"I mean steal of course," you affirm.
Archer looks down awkwardly, "Yeah, funny thing, I know that your job is to steal things for the rebellion, but could you not steal on my behalf?"
You open your mouth to press him, but surprisingly, he interjects,"look, I can leave anything that you think I should leave here, but no stealing, please."
You study Archer for a second, seeing him in a new life. You never would have thought that someone who kills people for a living would have such quad against stealing. You shrug, "Well, your coat should stay, and of course, that rifle of yours. It's a bit too big to lug around with you on this.
He reluctantly unslings his rifle, cradling it in his hands for a second. "Are you sure that you want me to leave this behind?" He asks, clearly looking for an excuse to hold onto it. "I'm a much better shot with it. And you already have a pistol. What if we get into a fight?"
You're about to dismiss him immediately, but he does have a point. With him there, they are at least twice as likely to run into trouble, and when they did, that rifle would be handy, but if they could avoid any trouble entirely by leaving the oversized weapon behind, would it be worth it?
A) let Archer keep the rifle and clothes B) tell Archer to ditch the rifle C) get him a change of clothes for him anyway. He can decide whether or not he'll wear them. D) your own idea
--- Wow! A whole conversation about clothes? Sign me up. This is the closest this chapter will be getting to outfitting, so yeah, I kind of needed it. Also, it sort of just sprung out of my last post.
Anyway, heist tomorrow!

This post makes me think there's some deep meaning none of us have yet figured out about the phrase "seen him in a new life." Like it's some real visionary stuff. Thank you for this. D. Just have him ditch the coat and shirt. Because reasons!

Just to be clear, do you mean to force him to wear a new shirt, or have him go topless.

You do know he can refuse, right? Not that you there isn't a chance, but it's somewhat unlikely.

Can we do c with lying and saying it was bought not stolen?

If he wants to not cooperate, that's on him. But he needs to remember that it's his a** that's getting reamed if he f***s up. Not to mention how he doesn't want us to "obtain" him a new shirt, leaving us with few options.
I think all that should be enough convincing.

Can we do c with lying and saying it was bought not stolen? I'd much rather back this. I think Doug's judgement at this point is so clouded by his own craziness that it's not safe to back any choice he makes. Ever. I mean, really. We're going into a heist with armed guards, the guy isn't even a thief to begin with, and he wants him to go topless? I'm don't mind if Doug wants to kill Archer, for whatever reason, but he could at least have the courtesy to be honest.

I'll have you know my judgement is primarily blinded by sexuality. And food. And him going topless is better than going with that coat or shirt, and it keeps his trust. It's not about getting him killed, it's about improving his chances with a helping of shirtlessness. Win-win. Yes, I'm aware he's a young teen.

You haven't even cased the joint.

D is locked in.
You're about to enter a contest against Archer. Your charisma vs his spirit.
Since they are both 6, you are evenly matched.
However, Archer's trait, easily embarrassed, gives him an advantage here, since he will more likely avoid embarrassing situations. So he gets +1.
Your deception trait can give you a bonus when lying to others, but since you are trying to convince him legitimately, it will not apply here.
Note: deception gives a disadvantage when people attack your reputation.
However, you have two advantages. You're an expert, and you're letting him keep his rifle, giving you a bonus. Now, it's 7:7

So the contest is done. I'll announce the victor in the post.

Contests continued:
So, when I say 7:7, I mean seven die against seven die. Having a score of seven means that seven dice are rolled to determine the result. The highest pair is your score. However, sixes are rerolled, and if at least two sixes are rolled while determining the result, you get a bonus energy, which you can either add to your pool, or use to affect the result. Energy doesn't affect the rate of success or failure, but affects the consequences of success or failure.
If there is a tie, you can defer to the next highest pair you have rolled, or if not applicable, the next highest number. Or you can reroll, which is what I'm doing, but it's not as quick.
If no pairs are rolled by one side, the person with a pair wins. If neither side has any pairs, take the highest number. Once again, I just reroll, but this works fine for contest mechanics.
So rule of thumb: you want pairs, and high numbers. Sixes are rerolled. Every two sixes is a bonus energy.
conflict works similarly. I'll go more into depth with them later. In conflicts though, if a pair is not rolled, take the average rounded down as your score. Once again, it really is simpler just to reroll, and it's not like I have time constraints.
