Varren is actually more of the Fighter than the Thief. He's actually a pretty horrible Thief without Nocturnal's blessing. Avenicci is much better, at both magic and thief skills. But if you need a straight up tank, Varren is your man... Er... Elf.

Well Bastian could be the fighter, but that would mean fighter actually got his legendary weapon much earlier on.

I meant your new one. And they had met once way back when Bastian needed a guide, so he's currently lagging. Which is why he needs a longer time skip now.

Well if you want them to meet after he gets Auriel's bow that could work. And then we'd all be on the same time frame. And I could always just turn my current quest into back story to do it faster. The only person who dies is an intelligent betrayed anyway so it's not that important.

That was the entire point of him hiring Lorelie. That was the quest he started off on. It's early in story but he's been at it for 9 years. Plus I never planned on him making a deal with a Deadric lord and he has one of the weaker shouts so this comps for some of the power he lacks.

The intelligent betrayed who died. He got the location when he hired his guide, and got near there without her before being stopped by guards. He tried to find a way around them by scoping them out from a distance a while later, when a betrayed who made a backdoor entrance offered to let him in. Bastian follows the betrayed as they go through all the ordeals in the cave. They reach the sanctum. Betrayed betrays Bastian. Reveals plan to blot out the sun and become a vampire lord with the help of Molag Bal. Bastian trapped. Meets ghost of Gelebor. Offered way out. He chases the betrayed up the mountain. Battle ensues. Bastian wins and gets his bow.
Of course then he has to sneak past the guards outside the cave again, but that's what aura whisper is for.
