In a faraway land, there exist two towns separated by a great tree. This tree, Yggdrasil, is home to a massive labyrinth. The labyrinth is dangerous, yes, but full of wonder. Adventurers from both towns form guilds and set out into the labyrinth in search of fame and fortune.
For generations, these two towns have fought over the tree and the treasures within. Over the course of hundreds of years, what was once an all-out war has gradually faded to an intense rivalry. Now, once a year, the two towns hold a friendly competition. A newly-formed guild from each town is chosen. On the 1st day of the 5th month, the guilds begin a race. The first to reach the guardian at the top of the 5th floor of the labyrinth wins pride and honor for their town, as well as the guardian's blessing.
"Used to be a bit more meaning to the race than that," the mayor explains as you close the tome. He's a short, stout man. He's aged, but still carries himself with a certain pride. His dark eyes constantly dart around the room when they aren't transfixed on your own, and his grey mustache occasionally seems to twitch with a mind of its own. "Ah, well, don't worry about that none. It's far in the past. Even my own ma only saw it as a small child." He pats you on the back reassuringly, then steps around the desk in the center of the room to take his seat.
At his side is an older woman with a few streaks of blonde left in her graying hair. She wears a light leather breastplate and hip guards, with a bow and quicker slung across her back. This woman is Muan, head of the Explorer's Guild.
It's been one week since you first arrived in the town of Zhanton with the intent of forming a guild. In that time, you've been interviewing several rookie adventurers. The upcoming festival has drawn wannabe explorers from far and wide - there's no shortage of qualified applicants. You reach into your pocket and pull out a list of your top picks.
Muan clears her throat. "Allow me to explain the basics of putting together a guild one last time. You'll have five members in your party, forming two rows. Each row can have up to three members. Any more and the restricted size of the labyrinth will act against you. Let me see... Members in the back row will be less vulnerable to most types of attacks, excepting weapons like bows, guns, or most spells. Monsters will form similar formations, so make sure you keep that in mind. As a strategist, you'll be staying far out of the combat. Where it's safe. If you fall, the party will be in trouble. Remember, without you, they would not have access to the strongest of their abilities - Force Boost and Force Break."
Force Boost and Force Break... A large part of your training this last week has been devoted to studying these techniques. When an adventurer activates a Force Boost, it grants them a temporary surge of strength [for three rounds]. After fighting for a while, they'll be able to use the Force Boost again. During a Force Boost, they can unleash an incredibly powerful skill, the Force Break. Unfortunately, after using this ability, they will be unable to even enter a Force Boost until they've returned to town to rest. An exceptionally powerful trump card, but with only one use between rests it must be used carefully.
Muan continues. "Ah. You can't only think about how your guild will work together early. It would be great to win the race, yes, but if you want your guild to be one of the greats one day... Remember, eventually you'll gain the ability for your adventurers to take on a sub-class to round out your weaknesses."
The mayor folds his hands together and looks at you expectantly. "So, then... Have you come to a decision?"
"If I may make a suggestion?" Muan cuts in. "If you're still undecided and wish to know more about any of the prospective recruits, I can summon them for a brief interview."
You look at the list of adventurers again. It's quite a lot to think about, lowering this giant list to only 5 adventurers that will work well together... You wrote down a bit about each of the applicants. Initial impressions, a bit about them and what their class can do. And Muan's provided you with plenty of more in-depth information about their abilities, if you wish to access it.
