The duel spirit floats up into the air nonchalantly. "Let's see. That Alicia girl... Seems pretty tough. And like someone you'd want to have as a friend. Now, she didn't strike me as the 'looking-for-friends' sort, but I'm sure you're going to try. At the very least you should stay on her good side. Lance is a jerk. Always has been, always will be. You can't do anything to him, he knows it, and he loves it. Just keep avoiding him. As for Sarah..." She suddenly draws in inches from Mark's face and lowers her voice to a husky whisper. "If you don't hurry up and ask her out already, I'm going to lose it."

"You know Sara is my cousin right, and shes practically my sister" Mark said back to the spirit in his face. "If i thought it was weird talking to duel spirits then i can only imagine what people would say if i dated family," Mark chuckled.
"Anyways do you know anything about this mark on my back?" Mark asked

Still nothing... I've combed this entire library from top to bottom for the past 3 years, and I still haven't found a single clue... So why am I still trying?
Alicia sighs as she sets the book down on the small reading table. She leans back in the extravagant luxury arm chair and rubs her eyes, looking around the dimly lit third floor of the library. The third floor was usually only reserved for faculty and staff, and the highest ranking Obelisk Blue students in the school. Supposedly, it contained all the juicy secrets about Duel Monsters and Ener-C around. For that reason, most students would kill just to be able to spend a single day up here- whereas she had used her connections to gain access years ago, back when she first arrived at duel academy and everyone knew it. Yet another one of the many reasons everyone hated her... Not that she minded. It was better than the alternative.
I still have half an hour before class... Maybe I'll go take a walk in the woods, spend some time at the old ruins.
She rises to her feet and neatly places the book back where she found it, then takes the stairs back down to the ground floor. On a whim, she grabs her favorite fairytale from the shelf- the Princess's Bride- and heads to the front desk. Grace Jones, the head Librarian, looked up from a book of her own and smiled affectionately. Ms Jones, or Grace as everyone called her, was a kindly old woman in her early sixties, and one of Alicia's only friends. She wore her long, gray hair in a neat bun at the back, and she was constantly pushing up her large, round glasses. She always wore the same outfit- a frilly pink blouse(Not an obnoxious pink, but that light beige kind of pink that people often expect grandmothers to wear) and a long dark blue skirt- and for as long as Alicia had known her, she had never seen Grace in anything else. New students would sometimes make jokes about her looking like humanoid cotton candy- she had a nicely plump figure- but those jokes soon stopped once you got to know her. And when you did, you wouldn't say another unkind thing about her ever again. Grace was the school saint and the school's grandmother all at once. Everyone loved her, and Alicia even more so. But Grace also had an air of mystery about her. To anyone's knowledge, Grace had never married before and had no family to speak of, save the students. And yet she seemed to know everything about everything(And everyone) and even the Principal and Vice Principal listen to her.
"Hello, Alicia dear. Checking out some more study material, are we?"
Alicia smiles and shakes her head. "No, I have everything I need for this semester. Just checking out my favorite book again."
Grace pushes her glasses up as she takes the book from her and scans the barcode on the back. "Ah, every girl's favorite story. You must have the whole thing memorized by now, dearie."
"I do," Alicia says, beaming proudly. "But I still love reading it."
Grace stamps the inside flap and hands it back to her. She then leans over and whispers conspiratorially, "I'll share a little secret with you, dearie. I read through the whole thing at least once a week."
Alicia gives a soft giggle- something that was about as rare as a full solar eclipse- and opens the beige schoolbag slung over her shoulder to store the book in, but before she can, it's snatched out of her hands from someone behind her. Alicia whips around in anger, her smile fading like a cool breeze on a hot summer day, and she finds herself face-to-face with the three stooges.
"Oh, I'm sorry, was this yours?" Lance taunts, grinning deviously- or, at least, he was trying to. The end result was him looking stupid, as per usual.
"Give. That. Back," Alicia growled dangerously, fire snapping in her eyes. Any intelligent person would have obeyed immediately; unfortunately, Lance lacked any sort of common sense or survival instincts. Instead, he merely laughed and tossed the book to one of his cronies.
"Only if you beat me in a duel."
He walked up to her until they were practically nose-to-nose- close enough for Alicia to smell his breath. Any other time, she would have walked away and let security recover the book- it was in her name now, after all. But she was in a bad mood, and she had had enough.
"Fine," she snaps. "If you want me to embarrass you again so badly, I'll oblige. Fortune Plaza, 5 minutes. Be there or I'm calling security to get my book back."
She shoves him away with surprising strength, enough to make Lance stumble like an idiot, and storms towards the exit. She suddenly stops in the doorway and turns back to him.
"Making me angry was a very bad decision on your part, Lance. Don't blame me if you get hurt."

Five minutes later, and practically the whole school had heard about their duel- likely the work of Lance's cronies. A large crowd was already gathering to watch the duel- mostly new students who were done with morning orientation, some Ra Yellows, and a couple Obelisk Blue students. Most of the Obelisk Blue students were conspicuously absent; either because they knew the outcome, or had seen her power in action before and had no desire to witness it firsthand again. Probably both.
He must be stupidly confident that he's going to win, if he's making such a show of this. Maybe he's using a new deck? Not that it's going to matter. I've never had to go full force in a duel before, but this time, I'm not holding back. The fool has no idea what he's gotten himself into.
Lance, of course, waited until the very last minute to show up. Jesters always did like to make entrances. "Ready to lose?" He taunted.
Alicia rolled her eyes and activated her duel disk; the newest model, in a custom dark red. "Shut up and duel."
Lance's face turned bright red with anger, and he too activated his disk- also the newest model. "I'll teach you to make a fool out of me!!!"
"Duel!" "Duel!"
------------- 8000 LP/ 8000 LP "Ener-C Reality Vision engaged. Duel Drive activated. Standby." Lance VS Alicia -------------
"Winners go first! I draw!!!" Lance shouts, as both duelists' disks shoot out 5 cards. "I'll show you the power of my new deck!!! With Yosenju Shinchu L and Mayosenju Daibak in my hand, I set the Pendulum Scale!!! With this, I'm allowed to summon monsters from my hand, as long as their levels are between 3 and 7!!! Oh light of the heavens, rain down upon me and grant me your favor! Swing, Pendulum of my soul! Pendulum Summon! Come forth, my monster servants! Yosenju Kama 1, Yosenju Kama 2, and Yosenju Kama 3 in Attack Position! I now set one card face down and end my turn. Now do you see? You have no chance against me!!!"
"My turn," Alicia says, completely unfazed. Her features were as cold as ice, and she appeared terrifyingly calm. "I draw."
She looks at her hand, then back at her opponent. "I tried to warn you. But you wouldn't listen. I will show you no mercy."
Lance merely scoffs. "Big talk. Let's see you back it up."
"Fine," Alicia said calmly. "I will. I activate the effect of Mermail Abyssteus from my hand! By discarding 1 other Water attribute monster, I can special summon him in Attack mode! I discard Atlantean Marksman from my hand! Appear at my side, my trusted friend!"
Lance laughs, but his laugh has a twinge of nervousness to it. "A level 7 that only has 1700 Attack points? What a joke."
"I now activate Atlantean Marksman's effect from my grave!"
"... What?!"
"When Atlantean Marksman is sent to my graveyard to activate a Water monster's effect, I can destroy one set card my opponent controls! I target your facedown! Atlantean Marksman, Deadeye Blast!!!"
"This changes nothing!" Lance bellows in anger, as his Mirror Force is destroyed. "I still have 3 monsters on my field, and your merman only has 1700 Attack points!!!"
"Who said I was done?" Alicia says ominously. "I now activate Mermail Abyssteus's other effect! When he is Special Summoned by his own effect, I can add one level 4 or lower Mermail monster from my deck to my hand! I choose Mermail Abyssgunde! Next, I normal summon the Tuner monster Deep Sea Diva from my hand and activate her effect! When Deep Sea Diva is successfully normal summoned, I can Special Summon one level 3 or lower Sea Serpent type monster directly from my deck! I Special Summon Atlantean Heavy Infantry! Now, I activate Atlantean Heavy Infantry's effect! Once per turn, I can normal summon one level 4 or lower Sea Serpent type monster in addition to my previous normal summon! I summon Atlantean Dragoons!"
"SO? For all that, you can still only destroy two of my monsters! I'll end this on my next turn!"
"You won't have a next turn," Alicia says, her eyes flashing with fire.
"Don't make me laugh!" Lance shouts back, now clearly nervous. "You're bluffing!"
"I don't bluff," Alicia reminded him. "And you're a fool. You should have paid attention earlier when I summoned Deep Sea Diva. Didn't you hear me say she was a Tuner monster?"
A ripple of nervous excitement sweeps through the crowd watching around them. "A Tuner monster? What's that?" One whispers. "I dunno," another says. "I've only heard rumors," chirps another. "Isn't that one of those legendary cards the Golden Emperor uses?" "Wait... Isn't that Alicia Thorn? You know, the one they call the Blue Witch?" "I heard she was involved in the Hazama Incident!" "I heard she killed her own father to take control of her company!" "I don't know about you guys, but I'm outta here!"
The whispers are abruptly cutoff by the duel resuming. Alicia closed her eyes for a moment, but otherwise showed no reaction to the rumors spread by her twerp opponent's older brother. However, when she spoke again, the anger in her voice was palpable.
"I warned you!" Alicia shouts, her calm facade shattering. "I've warned you not to push me too far for years! Now you'll see just how impassable the gap between us is! I tune the level 2 Deep Sea Diva with the level 2 Atlantean Heavy Infantry and the level 4 Atlantean Dragoons in order to summon forth a far greater power!!!"
She suddenly claps her hands together in front of her, as if in prayer, as a great wind- a real wind- whips up out of the blue, causing her jacket to billow and flap around her. "Oh scarlet ruler of flames that dwells in the deep beyond, hear my prayer... Descend now in a blaze of ultimate glory and cleanse this foolish world of man of all impurities! SYNCHRO SUMMON!!! Appear, level 8, Scarlight Red Dragon Archfiend!!!"
"Synchro WHAT?"
The wind intensified, kicking up leaves and dirt, as the three monsters flew into the air and became one, forming a giant ball of flame in the sky. The sphere then burst apart, while most in the crowd ran for cover, sending a shower of sparks raining down upon the world. Beneath her jacket, the odd birthmark she had since birth began to pulse and glow, emitting a fierce crimson light. Little did she know, that one decision would set into motion a chain of events that would change her life- and the world- forever.
----- A garage in the old Satellite district...
Before Emma could respond to Michael, Hector suddenly hissed and clutched his arm as it began pulsing. He rolled up his sleeve and stared at the mark on his arm, as it started to glow a fierce, bright crimson. For the first time in years, as he stared at the glowing birthmark on his arm, Hector felt a hint of real emotion. He felt fear.
----- Meanwhile, back at Duel Academy...
"Appear now, level 8, Scarlight Red Dragon Archfiend!!!"
The giant dragon burst out from the sphere and let loose an earthshaking roar, before floating down to rest in front of Alicia. Lance, his bravado all gone, now stood quaking in his boots. "W-what is that thing?!"
"Meet my friend Scarlight," Alicia says, smiling ever so slightly. "Scarlight, say hello."
The dragon roars.
"Good dragon," Alicia praises. "Now, let's finish this!!! I activate Scarlight Red Dragon Archfiend's effect! Once per turn, I can destroy as many other special summoned monsters on the field with ATK less than or equal to Scarlight's ATK, and you take 500 damage for each one! There are 4 other monsters on the field that we're Special Summoned, so you take 2000 points of damage!!!"
"WHAT?! W-wait, no-"
"Scarlight, let's show him what happens when we fight for real! Absolute Power Flame!!!"
Scarlight rockets high into the air, high, high above Duel Academy. He leans his head back and spreads his wings, which begin to glow red. A small sphere of darkness forms in the dragon's maw, emitting an ominous humming sound. After a few seconds, Scarlight throws his head forward and unleashes a massive beam of swirling dark fire at the academy grounds far below. Upon impact, all other monsters on the field are obliterated and the Ener-C Reality Field flickers and distorts. Lance is hurled backwards several feet and lands unceremoniously on his rear end.
He begins to stumble awkwardly back to his feet, but Alicia doesn't give him a chance. "Did I say I was finished?! I now activate the effect of the second Mermail Abyssteus in my hand and discard Mermail Abyssgunde from my hand! Appear once more, old friend! I Special Summon Mermail Abyssteus! Next, I activate Abyssgunde's effect from my grave! When Gunde is discarded to my grave, I can target one other Mermail in my grave and Special Summon it! I choose my other Abyssteus! Return to the field! I'm sure, you being a stellar student and all, you can tell what comes next."
"Using my two level 7 Mermails, I build the Overlay Network and XYZ summon my other mighty dragon!"
Once again, Alicia claps her hands together. "Oh pitch-black ruler of darkness, hear my prayer! Spread your mighty wings of ruin and lay waste to all who oppose me! XYZ SUMMON!!! Descend, rank 7, Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon!!! Battle phase! Scarlight Red Dragon Archfiend, attack directly with Crimson Burning Hellfire!!!"
Scarlight rears his head back once more and unleashes a mighty beam of raging fire, which sends Lance hurtling back another couple feet. "Now, Flare Metal, attack with Darkness Gigaflare!!!"
Flare Metal spins high into the air, higher and higher, then turns in mid air and starts flying back down, a large sphere of darkness forming in his maw. He pulls up short, just above roof level of one of the buildings, and unleashes a massive beam that explodes upon impact. By this time, the majority of the crowd is hiding and well clear of the blast zone.
Alicia suddenly takes a deep breath. "And with that, I end my turn. You still have some lifepoints left, but there's no use continuing the duel when you can't even stand. Unlike some people, I don't like kicking people when they're down. And unlike you, I'm not a bully. Give me back what you stole, and we'll call this a draw."
One of Lance's cronies immediately rushes over and places the book on the gas's beside her before running away. "Good. Next time, don't pick a fight you can't win."
As she moves to hit the "offer draw" button on her duel disk, Lance suddenly starts standing up. "You... You're nothing... Just a fossil from the past... How... How dare you... How dare you make a mockery out of me! I am the future heir of Avalon corp, not you! I AM THE FUTURE KING!!! You are nothing!"
Alicia's eyes show a twinge of regret and sadness, then they darken with anger. "... Yeah, I thought that was what this was about. You really don't get it, do you? I am Alicia Thorn, proud daughter of James Thorn, and Avalon Corp belongs to me."
Miraculously, Lance manages to get back on his feet, albeit barely. "SILENCE!!! This duel isn't over yet! I draw!"
He does so- in the most dramatic way possible- and his eyes light up. "YES! With this, there's still a chance! I activate the spell Upstart Goblin from my hand! With this, you gain 1000 LP, but I can draw another card! This is it! Everything is riding on this! I draw! WHAT? No, this can't be, not this card-"
"Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon's effect now activates! As long as he has Overlay Units, you take 500 damage every time you activate a card or effect immediately after it resolves! And that means you now pay the ultimate price for using Upstart Goblin! Flare Metal, use Chaos Field Prevention!!!"
Flare Metal spreads his wings and a great purple shockwave bursts out from them, ending the duel. The reality field shimmers and dissipates, Alicia smiles and quietly thanks her twin dragons as they too vanish. Her mark suddenly dims and stops glowing altogether. She retracts her duel disk, picks up her book, and walks over to Lance, who was currently on his hands and knees, covered in very real bruises.
"For what it's worth, I'm sorry, " she says softly. "I didn't want to hurt you. I never wanted to hurt anyone."
And with that, she walked away.

Location: The Governor's Spire, the tallest skyscraper in all of New Vesta, at the very heart of the city
"Sir! We've detected an unknown surge of power in the Net! It appears to be from a Class S summoning!"
A female voice said frantically, as the young woman typed furiously at the control panel in front of her. Dozens of other men and women all around her also began to work, frantically trying to pinpoint the location of the anomaly. Every one of them appeared identical to each other; perfect clones, all dressed in white, wearing what appeared to be some sort of mechanical visor around their eyes. In front of them, a massive, incredibly complex control panel stretched around the wall of the odd cylindrical chamber, and an impossibly large interactive hologram of New Vesta city floated all around them, stretching into infinity. In the very center of this chamber, at the very top of this giant hologram, there was a chair. Not just any chair mind you, but a leather padded chair that sat atop of a giant pillar made of some unknown opaque material. On this chair, sat a man. Not just any man mind you, but the man who was known merely as "the Founder". Above him, the floor of the heavens. Beneath him, the ceiling of the world.
"What was the summoning method?" He asks, and his voice is odd. It is neither here nor there, but everywhere.
"It... It appears to be a synchro summon and a XYZ summon at once!" She answers.
"Same location, sir!" Another clone says. "Triangulating it now!"
"The location is Dual Academy Island, sir!"
The Founder leans back in his very comfortable chair. "Then it is finally time to begin," he says to himself.
"What should we do, sir?" A different clone asks.
Darwin smiles. "Why, send out the invitations of course. We can't have a tournament without our star players, now can we? It is time for the curtain to rise on this crimson millennium."
"Yes sir!" "Yes sir!" "Yes sir!" "Yes sir!" "Yes sir!" "Yes sir!"

While waiting for the DM Girl to respond, Mark caught wind of a duel that was happening between Alicia and Lance. "Hold on to that thought i want to check out this duel real quickly," Mark said taking off towards the crowd of people. Mark posted up on a nearby hill so he could ge a good look at the duel but be far away enough that he could comfortably talking to DM crow......Girl.
"Hey DM Girl you seeing this wow," Mark said very excitedly seeing Alicia uust sychro chicken.... shoken her Scarlight Dragon. "So she's able to sychro summon, and her dragon, wow i almost feel sorry for Lance almost," Mark said. When Mark saw Alicia summon her other dragon Marks eye were glued to the action.
"I wonder how my dragon would do, he's strong but man," Mark said as he watched Alicia unleash her Dragons on Lance. Mark was about to ask DM girl about what she thought when a sudden pain in his right shoulder stopped him before he could say anything else. "This pain where did it come from Mark said as he saw a red glow coming from his right shoulder. "Weird it never did this before and now of all times when her Scarlight Dragon apppered," Mark said as he fell to the ground because of the pain. "Hey DM Girl what you think?" Mark asked while he was in pain.

Mark's incorporeal friend ignores him and his questions, staring intently at the fight in the distance. One of the duelists is setting off alarms in the back of her head. And that technique, the summoning methods, all of it's beyond what a normal person... Mark says something about something, and she catches a glimpse of him in the corner of her eye. What little she sees is enough to snap her out of her reverie. Mystery solved. "Mark? Your shoulder's glowing."

"Yeah i figured that much," Mark said.
Yet as quick as the pain came the pain left almost as soon as the duel ended. "Weird hey DM Girl any idea why that happened?" Mark asked
While all this was going on Mark didn't notice how his two dragons Odd Eyes Pendulum and Black Wing Dragon were glowing fiercely almost like they were responding to Alicias dragon

"She did something called a synchro summon, then something called an XYZ summon... Interesting," Dark Magician Girl tells Mark. "Not many people know about those techniques. Even among people who know about them, not many people can pull them off. This Alicia's someone to keep your eye on, Mark." "And then she was all ex... excise... exc... 'XYZ summon!' and she blew Lance away with this crazy Red-Eyes super-dragon thing! It was like... Red-Eyes, but not. It was crazy, man, I can't believe you missed it!" Aaron excitedly finishes relaying the story of Alicia's duel to his friend.
"Alicia... Alicia...? Wait, you mean Alicia Thorn?"
"Uh... Maybe? I know she's one of the bigwigs my dad works for. But, like, so high above hi-"
"Focus. Alicia. Blue hair, ponytail, yellow ribbon?" his friend asks. Aaron nods, and his friend violently shakes his head. "You should stay away from her, man. She's bad news."
"Huh? But she seems nice... Well, not really 'nice,' but she yelled at Lance, so at least she's not nice to the right people. Which-"
"No, dude. You don't understand. For one, she acts every bit as snotty and entitled as all the rest of those obelisk rich kids, she's just not as in-your-face about it. People say she was involved in the Hazama incident - even you should know about that. Some people say she even caused it, but that seems a bit far-fetched... Well, at any rate, if she's using a bunch of crazy summoning methods... She may actually be as dangerous as people say. So watch out for her. If someone like you were to get on her bad side, I'm sure you'd just... disappear." Aaron's friend finishes his tirade with an uncharacteristic passion, then stands up and walks off, leaving Aaron standing dumbfounded in front of the dorms.

"You know i can do those two forms of summoned too right," Mark sighed towards his friend. "Besides i have fancey dragons too," Mark pouted. "You know what i have a crazy idea, okay see ya DM girl," Mark said taking off towards Alicia.
Mark managed to catch up to Alicia just as he was about to leave. "Hey Alicia you have a moment?" Mark asked. "Thats was pretty impressive with those two dragons you summoned with those two techniques what you call it xyz and sychro chicken..... wait shoken," Mark said to her. "I really would love to challenge you sometimes even if i am just a lowly Ra Yellow," Mark said with a mock bow. "Just wondering i don't have to steal your book though right," Mark asked. "Besides i wonder how my dragons would fare against your dragons, it could be one sweet duel if your interested of course," Mark said to Alicia

Alicia merely stared at the boy, her eyes glinting with a mixture of amusement, disbelief, and even mild curiosity.
"You're... Mark, right? Sarah's younger cousin. Listen, I'm not in the mood right now, and I don't duel just anybody who walks up to me and asks. If you want to duel me, you'll have to wait until the school tournament. If you can make it to the finals, then we'll duel."
She starts to walk away, then abruptly stops and turns back to him. "Oh, and I um... Thank you."
Her eyes suddenly dart to Mark's side, and she stares at the empty air for several seconds.
That's weird... I thought I saw...
She opens her mouth as if to ask a question, then seemingly changes her mind. "... I have to go now. Class will be starting soon. I suggest you hurry as well."
Without another word, she headed towards the Obelisk Blue building, just as the first bell sounded.
--------
The rest of the morning passed by quickly, and proved blessedly dull and uneventful. Rumors about her, and her little performance in the courtyard, were already circling through the school like a pack of angry sharks. By now, she was used to the fearful looks and whispered name-calling, that didn't bother her. What did bother her was something else entirely. After their duel that morning, Lance had been taken to the Infirmary, and- of course- he had insisted on calling his brother. While Lucien didn't give two cents about his younger brother, he would relish any opportunity to make her life difficult. Most likely, he would try to have her arrested, and use that as a legal excuse to try and block her from inheriting the company on her birthday.
I really made a mess of things this time, haven't I... Sorry Erin.
Alicia sighed and sat down for lunch in the Obelisk Blue cafeteria, intentionally taking a seat at an empty table, away from everyone else. She ate her lunch in peace and quiet, at least until the school-wide intercom- which was usually only reserved for important announcements- blared to life.
"Will the following students please report to the Principal's office: Alicia Thorn, Sarah Pelt, Mark Goldstein, Lance Edgar Wilson, and Aaron Weiss."
Alicia blinked in surprise a few times before quietly standing up and clearing her tray.
If this is Lucien's doing, then why invite the others...? What is he playing at?
Ignoring the stares from everyone else in the cafeteria, she left the large, rectangular hall in silence. On a split second decision, she stopped and waited for the blond girl hurrying after her to catch up. Later that day, she would still be wondering why she waited. That was the second decision that day that would change her life forever.

"Hmmm went better then I expected," Mark said shrugging his shoulder. Mark went towards the Ra building with his hand behind his head. With his trusty and occasionally annoying spirit by his side he went to his classes and kinda of just started daydreaming about what a duel against Alicia be like. The thought of his two trusty magicians and his old friend odd eyes dragon by his side he felt ready to take on anyone. Lunch came and besides the whispers of the duel with Alicia and Lance things were very uneventful. Kinda of just took a seat wherever the first empty seat he could find. Mark got along with most people so sitting with a group of strangers was nothing for him, either they talked with him or just ignored him. Mark was just about done with his meal when a call over the intercom came. "Wait the principal's office," Mark said as he got up from his seat and kinda of just stared in disbelief. "I couldn't have been that late could I," Mark silently whispered to DM crow Girl while he was outside. "Also why call Sarah she was in class when I watched Alicia BBQ Lance?" Mark said heading towards the Principal's office. Meanwhile dood...... Sara's day was like any other day well besides Lance kissing her hand which she had to scrub for a good 15 minutes. Her classes came and went in between she heard how Alicia and Lance duel and Lance ended up getting fryed by Alicia's dragon. Sarah actually felt a little sorry for him a little. Anyways lunch came and she saw Alicia sitting by herself. "Maybe I should?" Sarah thought out loud. "Yet she noticed that Alicia seemed to not be in the mood so so she grabbed the first seat she found. "Hmm I wonder how our duel would go, despite being here a year longer then Alicia still never got a chance to duel her," Sarah said eating. Just as Sarah was done eating she heard over the intercom how her along with Mark, Alicia, Arron, and Lance were being called down to the principals office. "What did Mark do now?" Sarah sighed as she began to leave the cafeteria.
"Well might as well apologize to Alicia?" Sarah said running after to catch up with Alicia.
"Thats weird shes actually waiting for me," Sarah said as she was in a full sprint and almost collided with Alicia. Thankfully her training as a performer allowed her to stop on a dime and twirl away from Alicia before she actually ran into her. "Hey Alicia sorry about that surprised you waited for me but thabk you," Sarah said. "Anyways sorry that my bone headed cousin got you in trouble and that you got called to the office," Sarah said very apologetically

Aaron's blood runs cold when he hears his name over the speaker. "But... I didn't do anything! ...Wait, I really didn't do anything... Some of those other names sound familiar. Is this about earlier? What do they want with me...?"
Aaron decides the best way to find out is to carefully return his comic to its sleeve and tuck it neatly into its proper place on the shelf before scooping a few textbooks off the ground into his bag - for appearances - and sprinting out the door towards the office.

"If you're referring to my duel with Lance earlier, that had nothing to do with either you or your cousin," Alicia stated bluntly. Her voice softened a bit, and she brushed a stray bang out of her face. "And I suspect, it has nothing to do with why we're being called to the office, either. No pont in speculating. Let's go."
Alicia and Sarah were the last to arrive at the principal's office, which was located on the second floor of the administration building. Lance actually hissed at her as she walked in- something she found greatly amusing- and Alicia shot him a harsh glare, which, whether by surprise that she had the audacity to glare at him or fear that she would punch him in the face, made him back up so quickly he smacked himself against the wall.
Alicia decided not to pay him anymore attention, and turned her attention to the others in the room. Sarah's younger cousin was the same as she'd seen him this morning, but the other boy- a Slifer Red- was someone she had never seen before... Or had she? There was something about him she couldn't place, something that seemed familiar...
Vice Principal Eric Princeton- a tall, skinny golden haired pompous oaf who permanently had a stick up his rear- stood off to the side, next to another person Alicia had never seen before; a woman. She was unusually tall, well above six feet(Granted, some of that height was from the heels she was wearing), with long purple hair that fell freely behind her like a waterfall of silk, and dark, almost haunting amber eyes. Her skin was perfectly clear and unblemished, and she had a perfect, almost bronze sun-worn tan that gave her an exotic, foreign look. She wore what appeared to be a lab coat, over a pair of black dress slacks and a white button down blouse, and even with the lab coat on, it was quite obvious she had the perfect figure most women would kill for. Alicia instantly distrusted her.
And then there was Principal Armstrong. Silas Armstrong was the polar opposite of his second-in-command; only a little above average height, but built like a professional bodybuilder, and with a regal bearing that Alicia had only ever witnessed in one man before. He was stern, but kind, and held a vast knowledge rivaled only by his dueling skills, which were legendary.
Principal Armstrong leaned forward over his large, wooden desk, and clasped his hands together in front of him like he usually did when he was about to give one of his infamous lectures. "Well, now that everyone is all here, let me start by saying congratulations. Don't worry, none of you are in trouble. Quite the opposite, in fact. Allow me to introduce our guest, Ms Jayne Navala. Jayne is the chief assistant and secretary of Governor Darwin, and the brilliant mind behind this year's wonderful festival."
He motions to Ms Perfect, who steps forward and gives a blinding white smile- God, even her teeth are perfect.
"You flatter me, Silas. But I am only one of many dedicated to assuring this festival is one to remember. To that end, dear children..."
She turns to each of the students, sizing them up for several seconds. "Yes, yes. You will all do nicely. The governor has decided that five lucky students from Duel Academy Island will be offered the chance to participate in the Millennial Cup tournament this weekend. Those who advance beyond the qualifiers will earn a spot in the Pro Dueling circuit, and the opportunity to participate in Pro Dueling tournaments across the country, all leading up to the Duel Monsters World Championship next year. And for the victor of the Millenial Cup... You will earn the honor and privilege of facing off against our fair city's greatest star, the one and only Duel King of New Vesta, the Golden Emperor, in a best 2 out of 3 title match."
She retrieves five shiny golden envelopes, each marked with the official seal of the Governor in bright red and the names of the five students present in bold, black letters. She places the envelopes on the Principal's desk, and smiles charmingly. For some reason, that woman's smile made Alicia queasy.
This feels too good to be true... Even most alumni don't get a golden ticket straight to the big leagues, and a lot of students never get that chance at all... What's the catch?
"I bet you all must be wondering, "What's the catch"?" Jayne says, still smiling sweetly. "There is none. Each of you were chosen for certain... Qualities, you possess. We've been scouring Duel Academies all over the continent for months in preparation for this, looking for those rare qualities that make a star. And from all the students on this island, you five were chosen. Inside each envelope is a rare, limited edition card that will be your ticket to the qualifiers. This card is very important, as you will not be able to enter the qualifiers without it, so be sure to keep track of it. You will also find a small allowance in your envelope to help you get your deck ready for the tournament- your very own Duelist's Card complete with 500 prepaid points- and the latest issue of Pro Duelist's Weekly, to remind you what you'll be fighting for on Saturday. You will also receive two 3-Day passes in case you want to bring your family to watch you shine, and a VIP Pass for yourselves that can be used at all festival venues this weekend- which includes front row seating for the King's exhibition match on Friday."
She pauses to give the floor to Principal Armstrong, who merely shakes his head and smiles. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, my young friends. Just remember that all the best duelists from around the county will be there, so if I were you, I'd bring my A plus game."

Aaron feels like the room is spinning. He looks around at the other students, then the principals and the strange, pretty lady. He looks down at the envelopes on the desk - yeah, that's his printed there. He checks his jacket, just to be sure. Yes, still red. Finally he manages to force sound out of his open mouth. "Guh?" he asks. "I... I mean... Uh... Is there some... mistake? I'm just a Slifer nobody..."

As the mark on Hector's arm began to glow a chill went down Emma's spine. She backed away but didn't cower, standing tall, knowing somehow that although that power was one she should instinctually fear she wasn't defenseless. Something similar seemed to rest within her as well, and just for that moment she was aware of it. Still, she knew her instinct to fear it was reasonable, and her grey eyes darkened to the color of dense storm clouds.

Jayne gives an intoxicatingly sweet, motherly smile. "My dear child, the color of your jacket means nothing in the real world. I see potential in you, potential to become a star. I see that same potential in all of you. That's why you're all here. Most duelists, even the ones from Duel Academy- with all due respect Principal- hardly amount to anything above mediocrity. They have a couple decent years in the Pro Circuit, then sputter out and find themselves a job as a mechanic or salesman. What I'm looking for- what we're looking for- is the next shining star. The next Golden Emperor, or the Silver King in his glory days. We're looking for performers, duelists, who can rile up crowds and stir the masses. And out of all the students here, you five have been selected as the best candidates with the most potential."
She runs her hand along the smooth wood of the deck, absentmindedly straightening each envelop so they're perfectly in line with each other as she does so, turning to each of the students and looking them in their eyes. Her smile widens. "well? What do you say? Are you ready to reach out and seize your dreams?"

Aaron steps forward, his knees shaking slightly. "Uh..."
He mentally berates himself. "No! C'mon, just like... like... Like when Neo the Magic Swordsman took on Pumpking and his Castle of Dark Illusion! No fear, no hesitation...!"
"Of course!" he announces proudly. "I have no fear for you to exploit! Your pathetic illu- Er, I mean, I'll gladly take your offer! And I'll show you all! Just what us Slifer Reds can really do!" He over-dramatically reaches out and seizes his envelope, accidentally knocking Lance's off in the process.

Marks places his hand on Araons shoulder in a comforting sort of way. "Couldn't have said it better myself buddy," Mark said to Araon. "So we have qualities that set us apart from other students and you see the potential in us," Mark said to Ms. Perfect. "Well there is only one thing left to do," Mark said as he went to retrieve his envelope from the desk. "Thats to not disappoint you, and to exceed your expectations in us," Mark said.
"Hmm well if you believe in us theb i guess all we can do is just go with the flow," Sarah said as she went to retrieve her envelope. "I appreciate this opportunity Ms. and look forward to the the tournament and everything," Sarah said to Ms. Perfect. While Sara went to get her envelope she didn't (or she kinda of knew) that Lances envelope was on the floor abd "accidentally" kicked the envelope underneath the desk.
"Hey Sarah didnt know you and Alicia were best friends," Mark whispered to Sarah.
"Well she did wait for me even though i almost tackled her to the ground," Sarah said to Mark.
"Hmm so about everything she said you trust any of it," Mark whispered to Sarah.
"Not one bit this just seems too good to be true," Sarah whispered back.
"Good at least i am not the only one who is highly suspect about whats going on," Mark said. "Hmm do you think this lady knows about my birth mark on my right shoulder?" Mark asked.
"I wouldn't ask her but maybe it has something to do with that, but for now all we can do is just take this one day at a time," Sarah whispered back.
"So Principal whats next after all this?" Mark asked

Hector stared in disbelief at his arm, which abruptly stopped glowing, just as abruptly as it started. An uncomfortable silence fell over the room. Michael simply stood there in shock, his mouth opening and closing silently like a goldfish. Hector turned to Emma and started to speak, but quickly thought better of it.
What do I say? That this happens from time to time? Last time this happened was.. That's right... My duel with the Golden Emperor all those years ago. Now that I think about it... It was right after that, that the Governor forced my hand...
Hector shook his head and walked over to pick up his black leather riding jacket, which he quickly threw on, covering his arms. He didn't blame Emma for being freaked out, it was a natural reaction. Still... There was something about it that bothered him... Had she seen the mark somewhere before? The Mark of the Dragon...
"I'm going out for a bit," he said finally, breaking the silence. "Michael, you can have the rest of the day off. Emma, if you'd like you can-"
Before he could finish, a loud knock on the front door interrupted him.
Well, so much for that idea...
"I-I'll get it boss," Michael piped up, snapping out of his trance. "Don't worry about it. You just go get some fresh air."
Hector inclined his head in thanks and walked back over to speak with Emma, while Michael rushed to grab the door. "Are you alright?" He asked quietly.
-------
"That depends on all of you," Principal Armstrong replied, smiling. "Those of you who accept will be granted a half day today, so you can call your parents and start preparing for this weekend. The rest will return to class. I will also have the duel arena opened for those who accept, in case you desire to practice against each other or the school computer. Alicia, Lance. You two are the last ones. Have you made your decision?"
Alicia nodded and confidently strode up to the desk. Before she picked up her envelope, however, she turned to Jayne. "If I win the Millennium Cup, will I have a chance to meet the Governor? In person?"
Jayne's eyes sparkled with curiosity, and her perfect smile widened slightly. "Why, of course darling. Along with the other prizes that come with winning the tournament, the victor will be granted any one wish by Governor Darwin himself- anything your little heart desires. But you won't have to wait that long, my dear. All participants in the Millennium Cup will be invited to a celebratory banquet at the Governor's private mansion Friday evening, after the exhibition match. You will have a chance to speak with my Master then."
Alicia nodded again and scooped up her envelope, placing it in her jacket's inner pocket. "Then I accept."
"Wonderful!" Jayne exclaims, clapping her hands together. "I'm sure a duelist of your legendary skills will go quite far. Perhaps we may even have a new Duel Queen, hmm?"
Alicia didn't reply, and instead, knelt down to pick up the lone envelope under the table- much to the surprise of at least a couple in the room. "Lance, catch."
She tosses the envelope to him, and he catches it effortlessly with one hand, then stares at her in a mix of surprise and disbelief. "You and I both know you aren't going to turn this opportunity down. If you want to prove you're better than me, here's your chance. I'll be waiting for you in the finals."
She turns back to the Principal and bows politely. "Principal, if you could open the duel arena now, that would be great. I don't want to bother my guardian when she's at work. I'll call her after."
He nods and rises to his feet, his immense bulk nearly causing the desk to rise with him. "Eager as ever, I see. Of course, my young student. Right this way. Eric, why don't you give our guest a tour of the grounds? I'm sure Miss Navala would love to hear some of your famous stories about the history of the island."
Jayne smiles eagerly, and Vice Principal Princeton looks about as nervous as an undergrad asked to lecture a famous professor. "Y-yes, of course. Miss Navala, if you would follow me."
