The Duel Runner. With the advent of this new technology, dueling evolved once again and became a symbol of speed, as well as the ultimate symbol of freedom! The world sped by like a blur. The towering silver skyscrapers surrounding the stadium spun around and around, seemingly at the speed of light, as the two Turbo Duelists raced around the track. The wind roared all around them, rushing through their ears. Fireworks lit up the midday sky in a brilliant display of color, but the two duelists barely noticed. They were locked in their own world, a world where anything was possible. A news crew followed the duel from the vantage point of a helicopter, high above. An eager young reporter with overly large glasses leaned out the side, desperately holding on to her brown cowboy hat with one hand and her camera with the other. "Ladies and gentlemen, it looks like this duel is just about over! The Golden Emperor has his opponent right where he wants him!" Below the helicopter, the duelist in gold claps his hands together, as if in prayer. "XYZ Summon!!! D/D/D Wave King Caesar!!! Now, with the already set scale, Pendulum Summon! Heed the call of your King, my servants! I now activate the effect of D/D Necro Slime in my graveyard!" The Golden Emperor slams his hands together once more. "Descend, O demonic light of that warped, twisted heaven! Fusion Summon!!! D/D/D Oracle King D'Arc!!!" He then dramatically reveals a card from his hand. "It's high time you learn why I am the Champion, and you are nobody! This is what it means to challenge the King! I activate Polymerization from my hand, and fuse D/D/D Wave King Caesar and D/D/D Oracle King D'Arc! Tsunami of the gods, ancient cataclysm that reduces all to nil, O Titan who slumbers in the depths of the void, unleash your righteous fury on this world and purge away all filth!!! I call upon the tide of the apocalypse! FUSION SUMMON!!! D/D/D Wave Oblivion King Caesar Ragnarok!!!!!" "Woooooooo-hoooooooo!!!" The young Reporter bellows into the wind. "There it is, folks! The Champ's strongest monster! The very same card he used to take the title from the previous Champ! And that, Ladies and Gents, will bring this Exhibition Match to a close! The winner, the strongest duelist of them all, the one, the only, Duel King Victor Grace, AKA, the Golden Emperor!!! This was Marisa Hugo, reporting live from Neo Vesta's own Grand Stadium, the site of the Millennium Cup that is set to begin in only a few days! Who will earn the right to challenge the Duel King for his throne?! Will we see a new champion crowned? Or will the Golden Emperor once again reign supreme, and remain undefeated?!!! Only six more days until we find out!!! See you'all then, and remember, stay frosty and staaaaaaaaaay.... DUELING!!!!"

"Hey boss, I'm back!"
Hector pauses from his work, leaning back from his nearly finished Duel Runner. He takes off his dirty work gloves and wipes the sweat off his brow, then rises to his feet.
"You get what I ask you?" He asks, moving to the sink nearby and washing his hands.
His assistant nods eagerly, slinging one large brown paper bag on the table, then handing a second bag to him. "Course I did. C'mon boss, you really gotta ask?"
Hector rolls his eyes as he takes out the Duel Runner Accelerator Chip he had custom ordered a while back- the final piece of the puzzle he needed to complete his new Duel Runner. "How's Taryn?" He asks knowingly, moving to sit at the table.
"She's great," Michael replies, joining him at the table. He opens the bag and doles out a large sub sandwich to both of them- the Works for him, and simple lean turkey and cheese for Hector. "I promised we'd do something together after work. Maybe go out into the city. Make a few memories, you know the deal. Not every day we have a Millennial Festival."
Well, technically, it IS every day for the rest of this week...
"So, you gonna take her out for a spin when you're finished?" Michael asks, motioning to the nearly complete Duel Runner.
Hector hesitates for a moment, then nods. "Yes, but only for a drive. I'm not a Turbo Duelist anymore."
Michael opens his mouth to speak, likely to challenge that statement, but is distracted by the TV before he can.
"There it is, folks! The Champ's strongest monster! The very same card he used to take the title from the previous Champ! And that, Ladies and Gents, will bring-"
Michael stood up and switched the TV off. "Why the heck do you do that?" Michael asks, whirling on him. "Watch that bastard's duels. Torture yourself like that. You and I both know who should be the Duel King right now. And it's not that worthless piece of dino dung, that's for sure."
"It helps me remember," Hector answers. "Why don't you take an early day today? We don't have any orders, and there's not much that needs to be done to clean up."
".... You sure, boss? I'll stay if you want me to. You know that."
Hector shakes his head. "No, it's alright. I'll call you if anything comes up."
He reluctantly agrees, and sits back down to finish his lunch. Afterwards, he got up to leave.
Hector watches the kid leave in silence. Surrounded by a blue aura only Hector could see, the kid bounced up the stairs, said a quick goodbye, and closed the door behind him. That "kid" was actually only a few months younger than Hector, and one of his only, and best friends. He had known Michael and his new wife Taryn- they had only married recently- since they were all children, when the four of them were growing up in Mamma Karla's orphanage. They had been inseparable back then, until...
Hector felt a rare pang of pain at the memory. There were few things in this world that could truly make him feel. That was one of them. He looked around his now empty garage, which was tainted a slight silver color- not because that was the color the garage was painted, but because that's how the world looked to him, whenever he thought of her. Hector Blythe had a very rare medical condition few even knew existed; a condition called HEI, or Hereditary Emotional Inability. Just as the name implied, it was a condition that prevented him from feeling emotion like other people did. Most of his emotions were "muted", and the ones that weren't, he "saw" in the form of colors, instead of simply feeling them.
The mechanic's garage that he worked in and owned was relatively small and basic compared to the giant companies of the city, but it was still a decent size, and his business was well known and trusted throughout Lowtown. The garage itself was a wide open room a few feet below ground level, and a set of metal stairs lead up to the front door. Another set of stairs lead up to the second floor, where his small one bedroom apartment was. The two story building had been leaking and falling apart when he had first started renting it, like everything else in the slums, but he had since fixed the place up. A large metal shutter door stood against the left wall, for customers to drive their Runners in, and a clean, orderly workstation stood against the back wall, with a couple somewhat new computers and more than a few piles of tools.
Hector finished his lunch in silence, cleaned up around the shop, then immediately went back to work on his Runner. It only took him a few minutes to install the Accelerator Chip, and only a few minutes more to run some final diagnostic checks. Then he stepped back and admired his work.
The base of the Duel Runner was black, while the front head, tail, and back wings were painted gold. The Runner was very sleek and slender, but also sturdy and obviously tough, as anyone who knew anything about Duel Runners could tell.. She was built for two things: speed and control. On the right side, in small white letters, the words "Twilight Phantom" were painted.
His mouth curved into a rare smile. Without delay, he went upstairs to change into his black and red riding suit, grabbed his helmet, and closed up shop for the day. He did some light stretching, then opened the metal shutter door with his key remote, and mounted his new Runner, just as waves of sunlight spilled into the dimly lit garage.
He took a deep breath and waited for a few moments before he slipped his helmet on, fastened the strap, and started the engines. The Phantom roared to life immediately, and Hector savored the sound. It was a sound he never thought he'd hear again. He slowly turned the bike around and coasted out of the garage, closing the metal door behind him.
The Phantom purred steadily and smoothly as he pulled out of the back alley and onto the street. Driving slow and carefully, he guided the Phantom out towards the old race track; an old stadium abandoned in time, that only those from the slums knew about. It was a remnant from a bygone era. Nestled between abandoned buildings on one side and the Vesta Bay on the other, the old Waterfront Stadium had definitely seen better days. It's once grand walls were cracked and broken, standing not even half as tall as they once did. Overgrown vines covered the walls and cracked audience seats. The race track itself, however, was still usable. Not ideal, but safe enough to practice on without signing your own death warrant.
Finding the stadium empty, he kicked his bike into gear. The engines growled like a caged lion demanding to be released.
... Let's see what you can do, girl.

One woman had been sitting in a shadowed corner of the stands, eating lunch and taking a break from riding, when a man on his own duel runner entered the old stadium and looked around, thinking it was empty. Intrigued, she sat up in her seat a little straighter and watched as he began to ride, clearly testing the limits of the bike by starting slowly and speeding up somewhat with each lap. It was the kind of test one would run after building a duel runner from scratch or after rebuilding one that had previously not worked. A smiled crept onto her face and she left her spot in the stands, taking an old staircase and winding down a few hallways until she came to her own duel runner where she had left it earlier. She walked with it until she reached the wide hallway where riders entered the track for turbo duels, where she sat down on her runner, put on her helmet, and started it. It was quiet when idle, so the mysterious other rider wouldn't hear it and wouldn't see her either. She waited just until the man had passed by, then she wasted no time revving up the engine and taking off after him, using only a fraction of the speed it was capable of to pull slightly ahead of the other rider, at which put she slowed just until they were going at an equal speed.
Some of her hair was flying freely in the wind where it stuck out from underneath her helmet, and her duel runner gleamed in the sun, with its matte white body with metallic gold trim and red and black accents. She turned her head to the side just enough so that they could catch the corners of each others' eyes, and a silent challenge was issued.

For just the briefest of moments, Hector was completely mesmerized by the mysterious stranger. Then a slow grin tweaked the edges of his mouth. Bad leg or no, he made a habit of never turning down a challenge. It was a habit that had often gotten him in trouble in the past, but even so, he didn't intend to break it just yet. The old champ still had some fire left.
Come on girl. Let's show our new friend what happens when you challenge a former champ.
Without a word, he revved the engines and kicked the Phantom into full throttle. With an incredible burst of speed, he shot off down the track and around the corner, effortlessly taking the corner at full speed, like only a real Pro could. He didn't even need to look back to know the mysterious woman had done the same.
... She's good. I might be in over my head.
His grin widened. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
The wind rushed past him. For the first time in years, he truly felt alive.

"Hehehe really you of all people, acting the part as a duelist," a hooded figure said laughing at Mark. "Really you should just give up now, your a little kid trying to play in a game of gods, ha pathetic," the hooded figure told Mark in a mocking matter. "Go ahead say how you never give up all the more pleasure I take from crushing the last bit of hope from you," the hooded figure said to Mark. "Now then lets end this charade attack....la la la la la la," the hooded figure right before attacking all of a sudden started singing?
"Huh," Mark said standing there dumbfounded.
"Time to get up sleepy head," a female voice called out to Mark.
"Get up?" Mark questioned then he awoke from his slumber.
"Yaawwwwnnn, that was a weird dream" Mark said as he sat up in his bed.
"Glad to see you awake, you know we can't be late for the first day of school," Sarah said. "You know unlike you Yellows us Blues are held to a higher standard," Sarah said to Mark. Sarah was standing in the doorway in Mark's bedroom she had her long Blonde hair in a ponytail, she was wearing the standard uniform of an Obliesk Blue, a blue jacket over top a blue shirt, and a blue skirt, completing her outfit were a pair of knee high socks, and dress shoes.
The Blue Sarah wears symbolizes that she is amoung the best of the best at the dual academy her and Mark attend. Normally getting into the island Duel Academy is next to impossible without the proper connections or being extremely wealthy. Lucky for Sarah and Mark, Marks mom is fairly well known actress and is famous enough to get both Mark and Sarah into the academy.
"Hurry up don't you know it looks bad if a Blue is late the very first day," Sarah grumbled towards Mark.
"Geez give it a rest, will you I mean it's not that far of a walk," Mark said hoping out of bed. Mark then began digging through his closet until he pulled out a slightly wrinkled Yellow Blazer which he flung over top a plain white shirt. Mark proceded to throw on a pair of dress pants and dress shoes.
Unlike the Blue that Sarah wore proving she was at the top of the class, Mark was a Ra, Yellow which was more like middle of the class. The Yellow meant he was a cut above the Sypher, Reds.
"Geez can you at least pretend to care about your appearance," Sarah sighed.
"It's not about the appearance of the duelist but about the heart of the duelist," Mark said. "Wait before we go can't forget these guys," Mark said grabbing his favorite deck based around his two favorite cards Dark Magician and Dark Magician girl.
"Unlike some people I keep my cards right here," Sarah said as she patted the card holder containing her deck, based around Melodious.
"Glad to see the Diva duelist is as prepared as always, anyways race you," Mark said running out the door. Sarah just sighed as she left the house chasing after Mark.

The teacher shuffled through his/her notes before dropping a paper on accident and scrambling to pick it up. After accidentally wrinkling the paper by gripping it too hard, the teacher squinted to read the notes he/she had written before announcing to the rather inattentive class.
"Okay, class, it seems we're doing some Structure Deck dueling to, well, get better at it." Mr. Lehman rubbed his brow. "Up first, we have, uh, Cecel, wait, Celio Farris and Noelle Chastain."
Celio put his earpiece in as he got up to go to the front of the class, bumping into a desk on his way there.
"You'll be using this one for today's class." Mr. Lehman handed him a deck of cards as Celio looked at him in annoyance.
"These cards look great." He said sarcastically as he shuffled the cards. "I mean, can you read how powerful this effect is?"
Celio presented a random card to teacher to further his point, and, possibly on purpose, the back was towards the teacher so he couldn't read it anyways. Celio quickly unfolded his duel disk and placed a few cards into the deck, having their names and effects read to him through his earpiece.
"Okay, I think I get the gist of this deck." Celio nodded before facing the class, waiting for his opponent to step up.

Location: Duel Academy Island; Fortune Square
"Even though i been here for three years the view is still breathtaking everytime I come to this fountain here," Mark said. "Oh look we still have time to spare," Mark told Sara in a very exaggerated tone.
"Sometimes I wonder about you," Sara said as she took a seat next to the fountain. "So Mark are you thinking about applying to be an Oblisek Blue at the end of this year," Sarah asked.
"I don't know maybe," Mak responded as he just plopped down on the lawn in front of Sarah.
"But if your a Blue me and you can finally, both have the honor of being Obelisks" Sarah said to Mark. "Also you could actually come and visit whenever you want instead of have to play 20 questions everytime," Sarah told Mark.
"Yeah but us Ra's don't have it so bad," Mark said staring into the sky.
"Been meaning to ask have you thought about going with a different deck yet?" Sarah asked Mark. "I mean i have nothing against the Dark Magician deck or anything but well with so many other stronger and better cards put there, the Dark Magician kinda of feels outdated," Sarah said to Mark.
"Thanks for the advice but i think I will stay with my "old" Dark Magician deck, its the first one i ever had and well it feels like its a part of my very being," Mark said staring at his Dark Magician card. "I dont know how to describe it but it feels like it's more then just a card," Mark said.
"Are you still going on about heart of the cards?" Sarah sighed.
"Please your one to talk i seen how you talk to Aria, Cannon, and Sernade before every performance," Mark replied. "Almost like they your coaches or supporters," Mark said to Sara who was beat red now.
"How long have you known?" Sarah hissed.
"Oh i known for quite sometime," Mark told Sarah.
"Well if you value your life you will keep that to yourself," Sarah hissed towards Mark.
"Whatever," Mark replied as he began to stand up. "Anyways looks like its almost time to get going," Mark said.
"I guess your right, same place for lunch today," Sarah asked as Mark nodded yes.
Mark and Sarah were caught up in there conversation that they paid no mind to their surroundings

Erin straightens Alicia's coat for the dozenth time since the ferry left the mainland several hours ago. She clicks her tongue as she gives a sharp tug to flatten a small wrinkle. She takes a step back, observing her work from various angles. She reaches over and fluffs the bright yellow ribbon holding her charge's dark blue hair in a ponytail.
"Only 17 and already nearly my height," Erin says with a sigh. "And going into your last year at the academy, too. It feels like only yesterday you were running around with your little shovel in your little dress... Oh, you always hear they grow up too fast but you never believe it until it happens to you." She flicks Alicia's bangs out of her eyes. "Though if you listen to anything I ever tell you, you should trim your bangs. Your eyes are much too pretty to hide behind all this hair." She steps back again, this time with an approving smile. "There, now, much better. We'll be arriving soon... are you sure you didn't forget anything? Pencils, toothbrush, hairbrush, bathing suit, extra socks and underwear? Ah... hygiene products?"

A few minutes earlier:
"And then I attack Lava Golem with Battle Fader."
"...wait what?"
Now:
What was left after the explosion started crumbling. Not that there was anyone important around for it to fall on. A building falls in a ruined city, and even if someone was around to hear it, they'd forget the sound by tomorrow.
They said this place was cursed, that the entire city was blighted by some duel monster god for sins against a card game.
Which of course,is as silly as it sounds.
Everyone here knew who the real god was.
From a rooftop, a boy watched the tower fall. Must be Tuesday. Could never get the hang of Tuesdays.

Alicia gives an exasperated sigh. "I have everything Erin," she reassures her guardian for what had to be the hundredth time. "I've double, triple, and quadruple checked. And I happen to like my bangs, you know."
She picks up her black backpack and shrugs it over her shoulders, then grabs her suitcase. "Let's go wait up on deck. I love watching the island come into view."

He's not half bad. I wish my students had even a fraction of his skill. But for now...
Emma sped up even more, well aware that she had yet to even reach her duel runner's maximum speed. Her eyes narrowed, reflecting the intensity she felt in her emotions and her focus. She could feel a similar intensity coming from the other rider, and she smiled.
Just how fast can you go?!

Hector watched as the mysterious woman breezed past him, and he felt his heart begin to race. He could hear his own blood rushing, hear his own heart pounding. He tightened his grip around his runner's handlebars. He could see the unspoken challenge in the other rider as she passed him, see the intensity in her stormy gray eyes, and it woke something in him, something he thought long buried.
Alright, if that's what you want... Let's rev it up!
He flips a switch beneath his right handle, and kicks the pedal hard, engaging the turbo boosters. Jets of blue flame shot out from the bike's back mufflers, and the entire world seemed to slow down around him, sending him rocketing forward, into deafening silence and the roar of the wind, as he neared Mach speed. He flew by the other rider like she was standing still.
However, all too quickly, he realized he had made a grave mistake. The boosters were still in the Alpha stage, and he had pushed his bike too far. The blue flames flickered and wavered, and Hector's duel runner shook and groaned.
With the calm hand of a professional, he flipped off the boosters and slowly began to ease on the brakes, guiding his runner towards the grass field in the middle of the stadium, in case he crashed.
It was all going smoothly, until a fierce pang of pain shot up his right leg, and his leg locked up. Hector hissed in pain, and barely managed to maintain control of his runner. It didn't help that he started having flashbacks either. He was all too familiar with the sensation of crashing. His leg burned. He could practically hear the sirens, the roaring laughter and jeering of the crowd...
"That's what you get! Loser!"
"You should have forfeited when you had the chance!"
"I hope you never walk again!"
"Failure!!!"
"Washout!!!"
Hector shook his head and bit his lip hard, enough to draw a drop of blood, in order to clear his thoughts. He would never experience that again. He was better than that. He was the best.
With a proficiency and skill that was truly stunning, he quickly regained control of his runner, and pulled to a safe stop in the grass, off the track.
He turned the bike off and stepped off, just as the other rider pulled up beside him. He removed his helmet as she walked over, his medium-length white hair spilling out over a well tanned and sharply sculpted face, and dark, piercing blue eyes. A couple day's growth of whiskers lined his jaw, and he had a long jagged scar over his left eye. A small, faded white scar marred his lip.
Hector extended his hand. "Nice riding. I'm Hector. Hector Blythe."

Erin smiles and grabs the rest of Alicia's things. "I know you wouldn't forget anything. But I still feel like I'm supposed to ask."
Erin takes a quick look at her own outfit in the mirror. A nice, classic grey suit. Everything seems to be in order, other than a few stray grey hairs. A quick sweep returns the offenders back to their place, masking them among the mostly black mass.
The pair make their way to the decks. Erin stays back under the shade of a table and its umbrella, avoiding the bright noon sun and its reflection on the expansive, blue sea. After a few moments, the monotony of the ocean is broken by a few jagged rocks in the distance. As the ship closes in, the rocks grow into a solid island ringed with a few small outcrops. Trees, plains, and beaches cover a section of the island, but a massive complex of buildings takes center stage - Duel Academy Island's main attraction.

"Emma Whitestone," she said as she took off her helmet and grasped Hector's hand. "You alright? It looked like you got caught in the moment and you paid for it, judging by the pain I could see on your face. But that aside, that was a bold move, pushing a new runner so far on the first test drive. Only someone who's foolish or very experienced would try that. I can tell you're the latter."

Hector dropped his hand to his side and motioned to his right leg. "Yeah, old injury. I'll be fine."
He looked over at his duel runner, which was currently spewing smoke like a chimney. "Experienced, yes... But also foolish. A bit of both, really. It's been a very long time since I've rode, and I'm afraid to say I'm more than a little rusty... I mostly just work on runners now. Repairs and such. What about you? You're no ordinary rider yourself. I recognize a pro when I see one. You on the circuit?"

"I wouldn't be alive right now if it wasn't for my duel runner, and for more reasons than I could name. For years I made my money racing, but now I teach everything related to duel runners."
Emma stopped speaking for a moment and gestured towards his duel runner. "Mind if I get a closer look at it?"

Hector inclined his head. "Go ahead. I built most of it from scratch myself, though I ordered the engine and CPU from Avalon Corp. The boosters I installed are hand built as well, though they're still in the experimental stage. Once I get them working, however, I intend to look into a contract with Avalon. The money would make managing my shop a lot easier, and I'd finally be able to give Michael the raise he deserves. But as our little race has demonstrated... They're still a long way from working."
A Duel Academy Professor, huh? No wonder she's good.

"So at this stage the runner itself is just a prototype meant to accomodate the boost system you're building. That explains quite a bit. Even so, this is not the first one you've built from scratch, now is it?"
---
Noelle, who had sunken down her seat purposely in an effort to go unnoticed, sighed as her name was called and she walked to the front of the classroom and took the deck she had been assigned. While Celio was busy pesteringg their teacher she looked through the deck, and found it to be less than satisfactory.
It's not Agents deck, that's certain. We'll just have to see how this goes.
"Celio, are you ready?"

Hector gave a subtle nod and smiled slightly. It was rare to meet someone he could actually hold an intelligent conversation about duel runners with. "Every duel runner I've ever owned, I've built from scratch. Doesn't feel right to buy one, not to me. Even when I did have the money to take my pick of a lot, I still built, repaired, and upgraded my runner myself. From the way you handle yourself around a runner, I'd be willing to bet you're the same. There's a type of satisfaction and pride that can only be gained from seeing the runner you've built with your own hands dominate a track, and you can always tell the difference between those who know that feeling and those who don't, by the look in their eyes when they see a runner, and the care they take when handling one."
He takes a deep breath, surprised at himself. He didn't usually open up to people so easily, and he very rarely talked this much. It was an odd feeling. "You said you teach runners? Out of curiosity, which academy do you teach at?"

"I guess, but don't think I'm an easy win just because I'm blind. I can still hear the names of your face-up cards and their effect with my earpiece." Celio nodded a bit before pointing at Noelle. "Prepare to be crushed under the sheer weight of these rocks!"
I hope she doesn't hold back. Seriously, why do people do that? I'm blind, not stupid.
