Hecate didn't move, hoping to size up Velia. For the first time she wondered if she should use her weapon, or simply go for her more traditional hand to hand combat approach.
She decided swiftly, and straightforwardly charged Velia. The best way to decide was to observe how she fought, and then adapt accordingly. Hecate's left arm swung from the left.

Hmm... I could end this right now... It would certainly help relieve Mr Gloomy's worries. But this girl intrigues me...
Instead of blocking and simply ending the match, Velia melted into the ground, disappearing into her own shadow. She surfaced behind Hecate, only half emerging from her shadow.
"Trying to observe how I fight is a waste of time," Velia said calmly. "You're a Dragon Slayer. Dragon Slayers are at their strongest when they rely on their instincts and emotions. Don't overthink things. Just come at me like you would any other opponent."

Hecate's eyes slightly widened as she placed distance between them. "Should have known." She thought with narrowed eyes. Well, two could play that game. Close combat most likely wouldn't work, so she would simply let her instincts run wild.
Hecate drew her fan. She flicked her wrist, sending iron needles towards Velia direction. She crouched before jumping high into the air. She unzipped her zippers, having a feeling she would have to all-out. Grinding as the large, iron wings burst from her back, she hovered in the sky. She wasn't going to use Gungnir this time around, she just needed the extra mobility.
It occurred to her how weak she really was. She bit the tip of her index finger in irritation.

Velia simply melted back into the ground, as the iron needles flew over her, landing harmlessly on the grass. She emerged from her shadow once more, this time emerging to her full height.
"My turn," she said ominously, looking up at Hecate, who was still hovering in the sky. The air shimmered around Velia, and a sudden wind kicked up as Velia gave her fellow Dragon Slayer just a brief glimpse of her true power.
Then, she leaned back and roared. "Shadow Dragon Roar!"
A gigantic maelstrom of darkness shot into the air. Velia intentionally caused her attack to miss, and the massive beam of darkness passed only a couple feet from Hecate's wings, shooting high into the sky before disappearing from view.
"Why do you want to get stronger?" Velia asked.

Hecate scowled. That was an intentional miss. "I told you. I want to get stronger to repay the people that gave me a home. What more do you want me to tell you? That I fight for my friends or something?" She asked harshly.
She nosedived towards Velia. "Iron Dragon's Roar!" A beam of iron zeroed in on Velia before Hecate zipped to the right. "Iron Dragon's Claw!" With that, both her hands became claws. Hopefully she could land a hit on the Shadow Dragon as she attempted to dodge her previous attack.

Hmm... Still have much to learn, I see... Perhaps I overestimated your potential?
Instead of dodging, Velia drew her sword so quickly the action was almost invisible to the untrained eye, to someone who wasn't looking for it. With a single, lightning quick slash, she sent a powerful shockwave spiraling upwards towards the blast, slicing the magical beam in two. Velia quickly sheathed her sword, as the two halves of the dragon's roar passed by her on each side, completely missing her. Her sword was already sheathed as this happened, so she didn't appear to have moved at all. Not even an inch.
"That isn't enough," Velia said cryptically, looking back at her opponent. "You won't find your answer that way, and you won't become stronger. Simply fighting for the sake of someone else will never yield true strength. As it stands, you and I are on completely different levels. And until you can understand my words, you will never be able to bridge the gap between us."
To illustrate her point, Velia suddenly unleashed her power. A towering pillar of blinding white energy burst forth from her, surrounding her, and the ground began to tremble. The wind became harsh. The ground sank beneath her, and within the pillar of light, Velia's dark, shadowy form appeared truly demonic. Her dark crimson eyes glowed like two miniature Blood Moons, and her incorporeal form seemed to shimmer. Her mouth, just a line, moved silently, and the shadow started to change. It developed wings and scales, and it grew, larger and larger, until the shadow seemed to be every bit as tall as the pillar, staring down at Hecate from high above.
Then, the pillar suddenly dissipated, revealing Velia in her Archwing form, the same form she had used to battle Abyss, hovering directly in front of Hecate, only a few feet away. Black lightning crackled around Velia's body at regular intervals. When she spoke, her voice was much deeper than before.
"I will ask you again. What is it you fight for?!"
-------
Orion watched the "fight" with genuine interest, leaning forward to place his chin on the backs of his hands. He had sensed Velia's power only briefly during the battle with Aboleth, but not enough to get an accurate reading on her. But this... This surprised him. But while her power caught him off guard, it was her words that truly... Unsettled him. They were eerily similar to something another woman had told him once, in a previous life.
Velia Ferro... Who are you?

Hecate scanned the pillars, her eyes narrowing as she saw the... Thing that emerged from the pillar. Confused in many ways, the Iron Dragon stared down her adversary. "Are you telling me that fighting for people isn't the way to grow stronger? Or... Are you telling me I need to find a goal in life and fight for it? Well, my goal is to never be abandoned, and I'll fight like hell to ensure that never happens to me again. I refuse to be alone again. No, I refuse to accept such a thing at all." Her eyes grew cold as her skin began to harden. It seemed as if she was diverting half her iron supply to the task. Her skin turned a light grey color.
The iron claw tips became narrower, yet much longer than before, and the wings seemed to expand, slowly hardening as it was coated with more iron. Eventually, they were about as efficient as an iron shield. Her left claw slowly shifted into lance. In any other case, it would have been a spectacle if not for the comical length of the lance and the pointed tip.The lance opened, slowly resembling something akin to a smaller, quicker Gatling gun capable of firing rapid iron 'bullets'. She kept her right claw open for slashing.

"So..." Leone began awkwardly as they set out from the guild. "Grigori, was it? I assume you're new, if you haven't even toured the town yet. How honorable of you to join the guild at a time like this."

Gareth returned from washing his face, still feeling a little chilly.
Let's get some fresh air in here.
Gareth swung open the window to his room. He was expecting a mostly peaceful day, and was instead greeted with the sight of the ground sunk in the distance, black lightning striking that area, and a large, demonic, and truly frightening entity in the middle of it all, seemingly staring down something that's a bit too far away to identify.
What the hell...
Pinching himself to make sure he wasn't still dreaming, Gareth stepped out of his room and hurried downstairs to where find Zalia.
"There's a demon with wings by a hill over there overlooking the city," he pointed toward the general direction he saw the thing. "Is that normal around here, or should we be grabbing our weapons?"

Zalia chuckled. "Oh, that? That's just Velia, my dear. She's having a sparring match with one of our guests from Alicorn Wing. Nothing to worry about."
--------
Velia shook her head. "I don't expect you to understand right now. But I think you will in time. For now... Let us finish our match. Come, Iron Dragon Slayer, show me if you have what it takes to stand up to a S-Class Wizard!"

"...Oh," said Gareth, a slight hint of disappointment in his voice.
And here I was hoping for something to get my blood pumping.
"That sounds a bit overkill for a sparring match," he commented. "So what's Alicorn Wing doing here?"

"S-S class Wizard?" Hecate mumbled under her breath in shock. No wonder she hadn't been able to touch her at all. They were gaps apart. Hecate couldn't even... Her eyes hardened. She wouldn't win, but she would get some hits in... Or lose trying."
Her wings flapped, sending her heading on a collision course with Velia. She pointed her long-range weapon at Velia carefully. "I can't use too many of these... Or else I'll run out of iron. Is it even possible to trap a shadow? How far does her shadow go? Does the sunlight extinguish her abilities?" She mused.
She fired two iron bullets straight at Velia. She needed to get her to follow her... Follow her somewhere where light was prevalent, and little shadow. Did that even work?

"Honor had nothing to do with it." Grigori shook his head. "Unless you refer to keeping a promise as 'honor'."

"What an odd thing to say... Do you not believe there's honor in upholding your promises? Or are you perchance being overly-humble?" Leone asks.

"That won't work," Velia said calmly, almost as if reading Hecate's mind. She casually swiped her hand in front of her, and that single action unleashed a massive shockwave of darkness and wind, knocking the iron bullets aside like toys and sending Hecate spiraling backwards through the air.
"Darkness and light are the same. They cannot exist without the other. You can no more extinguish my shadows than you can extinguish the Sun."
Velia suddenly charged without a moment's warning. Her speed was blinding, so much so that she appeared to teleport. She was there one moment, and the next she was right in front of Hecate. A small ball of darkness appeared in Velia's hand, and she slammed it into Hecate's stomach, shattering her iron skin like glass and sending her crashing to the ground below.
Velia landed on the ground in front of where Hecate fell, her appearance returning to normal, as Orion and Hecate's Guildmate came running over.
"Relax," Velia said preemptively. "I intentionally held back. She'll be sore for a couple hours, but otherwise perfectly fine."
As Hecate slowly rose to her knees, Velia gave a rare smile and leaned down to offer her hand. "You have a lot of potential, kid. But you need to learn how to rely on your instincts more, and how to think on a different level from everyone else. Combine that with a reason to fight, not just for others, or some goal, but for yourself, and the knowledge to protect... That's what makes a S-Class Wizard. I have no doubt in my mind you'll get there someday."
Velia helped Hecate up and once more offered her hand, this time for a handshake. "There are some things we can only learn about each other by fighting. Wizards are odd that way. Whenever you want to spar Hecate, I will gladly be your training partner."
------
This time, Zalia gave a deeper laugh. "My boy, if there's one thing you'll quickly learn about us, it's that we don't do anything halfway. The meaning of the word overkill is lost on most of my grandchildren. As you can probably imagine, that's the reason we're a bit infamous for going overboard on jobs. And besides, that was Velia's way of showing respect for her opponent. But enough of that. Are you hungry? You were asleep all morning. I saved your breakfast and lunch, and it will only take a minute or so to heat up. And afterwards, if you're bored, you can go catch up to Eden and Cenric, who are giving a couple of the members from Alicorn Wing a tour of the city. They're only in town to escort a trade ship, and they have to leave tonight, so now might be your only chance to introduce yourself for a while."

Hecate placed a hand on her sore stomach. The impact had knocked her silly. "My... Instincts? Are you telling me to think less during battle, and simply follow what my body has told me to do?" She grasped Velia's hand before giving it a firm shake.
"A reason for me to fight. Somehow that feels like something I can't figure out. I joined Alicorn Wing because I thought fighting in itself was the reason I wanted to fight, but I suppose that isn't true anymore. I'm sure the answer is closer than a think. Most likely, I'm overlooking it again."
Then, she frowned before it lightened into a smile. "If I'm getting your talk about instincts wrong, I'm sure I'll figure it out, if I haven't already. I'd like to thank you for the spar. When we next meet, I can only pray I won't be as weak as I am now. Thank you for a good spar."

"I wouldn't confuse honor with responsibility." Grigori replied.

"How about a change of subject?" Eden said, intervening more for her own sake than that of any other's. "What you see of the town right now is quite far from how it normally is. You'll have to come back and see it once everything is restored. Come and stay long enough to see sunset next time. The ocean, and hills of roses, and white stone buildings all combine together brilliantly in the sunset. One of the best views is from the hill over there, near the park. But enough about our town, why don't you tell me about your town and the guild? It's probably not as crazy as our guild is, even though what you saw today isn't a regular thing. But I can't say it's rare either. Just not an everyday thing, that's all."

"Well, Harborshore's definitely not as pretty as Rosebud..." Leone admits. "Lots of grey buildings, lots of stores and warehouses. But if you're looking to do some shopping, there's nowhere better! We constantly have ships coming and going from all sorts of exotic ports, so there's always someone new and interesting to meet. If you're ever in the area, stop by and I'll treat you to this wonderful little restaurant that does dishes from all over the world. As for the guild... We're not as... energetic as Silver Chimera seems to be. Everything's very laid-back. We don't get to many high-profile contracts, but we get by."

"Honestly, the last time I took a high profile quest of my own volition, and not one I was assigned, I nearly died. I've only been out in the field on anything remotely dangerous twice since then, and never alone. So I believe that as long as you're getting by and you're still able to enjoy the work that your doing, then you have every reason in the world to be happy about something. So it sounds like your guild and your town are pleasant enough in my book to warrant a visit. I'll have to stop by sometime in the future," she said, then smiled.
