"Then you can tell me," Zalia said, smiling kindly. "And when the time is right, we'll tell her together. But for now, Eden needs time to rest and recover."
A knowing look briefly flashed in her eyes, making her seem almost ethereal for a moment. "Is it about how Siren Scale was disbanded, Grigori?"

Grigori let out an airy chuckle before answering. "Disbanded is a light way of putting it."
He curled up into a ball in his chair before mumbling out the rest.
"They're all dead. I-I killed them, even the slaves. I lost control, and I-I couldn't live with myself. The other slaves were just like me and I slaughtered them. Some of them were like Eden and were just... gone. They didn't see me coming. They didn't know I had learned magic, that I had been reciting formula after formula in my head for the two years that they tortured me. What they did wasn't just punishment; it was to break me, and it did. They broke me in all the wrong ways and created a monster who ended them. Even my magic is a twisted perversion of what it was supposed to be."

"Okay. I should start with how things began," she said, not to Orion, but to herself as she tried to get her thoughts in order. "I was raised as an orphan, Orion. I say "raised as" because I don't know if I really am, or was, an orphan. No one knows. I was found as a very young child wandering through a city, and my parents were never located. I don't even know what name I was given when I was born, since I was too young to tell them anything clearly. I was thrown in an orphanage and given this name I have now. But that city was falling apart, being eaten alive by the poverty than ran rampant. There were plenty of orphans, and never enough food to feed them. The older ones regularly got thrown out into the streets on their own when there were too many kids, since they had the best chance of surviving. When it was my turn I resolved to find some way out of that city, knowing I wouldn't be able to survive where I was. So I did, and I ended up travelling to Pergrande."
"The rest of it is a long story, but I found a job in a city on the coast. I was able to make it on my own. But one day I was inside a shop when two thieves, independent of any guild affiliation, tried to steal some items. I no longer remember what they were, it was so long ago. Things turned sour, and I ended up as a hostage as they made their escape. It was very confusing for me, and I didn't fully understand just what had happened. After the guards had lost their trail they let me go, but not before they gave me some food as a bribe to keep me quiet. And that one stupid action... it ended up changing my life. Orion, you must already realize that at that time I had never known what it felt like to have a full stomach, so when I did finally know that, and all that combined with my confusion... They said I would be able to get as much food as I wanted if I worked witht them. So I became a distraction for shopkeepers for a long time, before they ended up teaching me their tricks. After a long time there, I heard the rumors of a guild of thieves in Pergrande, and I sought them out. It was the worst mistake I've ever made..."
Eden sighed, then she continued to tell her story, still leaning her head on Orion's chest. "I worked with Siren Scale for a while, until I learned how they got most of their members. Members like Grigori, who were slaves. That knowledge turned my world upside down, but before I could do anything they began to suspect that I would leave. I don't feel like going into the rest of that story, but they left me for dead. I escaped by using divination, which was something I had never used much before. I had to learn quickly to spare my own life. When I did escape I fled as far as I could, never stopped looking over my shoulder, all that for months. I wandered back into Aselia, and after several more tense months I found Silver Chimera. This is the first place I've ever called home. These people are the first i've ever called my family. And I can't lose that. So I fight to protect my home and my loved ones."

In an odd way that Orion couldn't even begin to understand, Eden's story somehow gave him clarity. He wasn't calm by any stretch of the imagination; to say he was would simply be a lie. He felt enraged at what they had done to Eden, how such an innocent and good person was forced into a life of misery, and the knowledge that it was a Dark Guild that had hurt her so only enraged him more. He also felt a vast sorrow and pity for her, and immense compassion, and all he wanted to do was hold her and soothe away her pain. But there was also a part of him that felt ashamed, and blamed himself. If he had just been able to accomplish his goal all those years ago... Eden might have been spared some misery.
But these feelings of his were no longer chaotic or uncontrollable. Instead, they were focused now, and that brought a sudden clarity to him. Orion smiled as he continued to tenderly stroke her hair- something he had been doing all throughout her story- and leaned down to place a gentle kiss on the top of her head.
"You're one of the strongest people I've ever known Eden," he whispered softly to her. "It may not seem like it at times, but you really are. And I swear to you, that from now on, you will never want for anything. I will always stand at your side."
He tightened his arms around her and closed his eyes. I know that's not going to be an easy promise to keep... But I intend to try. I wish I could show you just how much I trust you... I wish I could tell you everything about my own past in return... But I don't want to place you in any more danger. Right now, it's entirely possible this is only in the name of vengeance... But if I tell you who I am- No, what I am, then that will put you on Khaos's radar... I don't want to risk that. Please, Eden... Forgive me. If you do find out someday, please don't hate me... I don't think I could survive seeing the hatred and disgust and fear in your eyes, that same look that haunts my dreams even now... Not from you...
"I want you to have something," he whispered to her, after a few moments of silence. "Wait here."
He reluctantly left her embrace and stood up, walking over to where his white staff leaned against the wall. He untied the light blue ribbon that kept the small silver bell attached to his staff, and walked back over to Eden, sitting back down beside her and placing the small bell in her hand.
"It's not anything that special," he said, closing her hand over the bell. "But it's the most precious thing I own. This bell will serve as a guide to you, even in the places all other guides dare not tread. It will serve as your light, even when all other lights go out. It has saved my life more times than I care to count. Take it as a sign of my trust, Eden, and know that even if we're thousands of miles apart, I will always be watching over you."

"It sound like it's more special than you want me to think. Anything that can keep people linked together over such distances is miraculous, actually," she said as she held it carefully in her hands. "Thank you, Orion."

"Perhaps you're right," Orion said softly, smiling widely as he pulled her back into his arms for a gentle kiss. "You're welcome, Eden."
A few minutes passed as Orion held her in silence. Everything else seemed to melt away. All his fears and worries, even the rest of the world seemed to fade, leaving just the two of them. He sighed, and before he knew it, he was telling her something he had never told anyone else. "It was given to me by my father a very long time ago... The bell, I mean. He said it was his greatest work, and that when I could understand why, I would be his equal. I... I think I finally understand what he meant. The true purpose of an artifact is to serve as a branch, a line that connects people together. It's a person's feelings given physical form. This bell... It was something different before. It expressed my fear of the dark, and my fear of being alone. But now... It expresses my feelings for you, Eden. My need to keep you safe... My desire to make you happy... Honestly, I don't know what this little bell will be capable of now. But I do know that I want you to carry it with you, always. Promise me, Eden."
------
Zalia leaned over her desk to place a comforting hand on Grigori's shoulder as she spoke. "What happened was not your fault, child. No one can blame you for that, any more than anyone could blame Eden for what happened to her, or for the dark pasts so many of us share. No one willingly chooses to suffer, Grigori. And you've suffered enough. It's time for you to let it go, and start anew. Now, come with me. I have a surprise for you. And don't worry, it's a nice one."
Zalia guided an obviously confused - but likely also somewhat curious- Grigori out of her office, and back over to the bar. A few minutes later, Rhys and Gareth returned, and Zalia smiled knowingly.
"How did it go?" She asked.
"The lovely Captain didn't need any help," Rhys answered, mirroring her knowing smile. "But if you mean the boy's test, he passed with flying colors and has my full recommendation. But you already knew that, didn't you? I'm willing to bet you knew he'd pass as soon as you spoke to him."
Zalia only smiled. Instead of answering, she reached down beneath the bar to take out the official Guild Stamp. "Gareth Bradshaw, as the second Guild Master of Silver Chimera, I hereby welcome you to our Guild. Hold out your right hand."
He did so, and Zalia stamped the Guild's crest on his hand. "May your days with us be filled with laughter, and your adventures be filled with companions. Even if your time here is brief, know that we still treasure it."
She then turns to Grigori, while reaching under the bar to retrieve a very important looking document and a small vial of golden liquid. "Grigori Vasya, once more I extend the offer to join our Guild. This document is both your official release from the DGESOU and proof of your new status as a citizen of the Aselian Empire. It is signed by the head of the DGESOU, the First Horseman of Pergrande, the Chairman of the High Council, and Prince Garon of the Royal Family. Be proud, child. You're free to find you're own destiny."
"This," she motioned to the vial of golden liquid. "Is a vial of special healing water, called Ambrosia, combined with powerful healing magic. It will heal any one area on your body, Grigori, no matter the damage. It can even heal your face, should you wish it. Or I can stamp the Guild Emblem on a particular article of clothing, if you prefer."

Gareth blinked. "That... That was it?" he asked Rhys. "Just like that? No background checks or rests of skill? Just a few questions?"
...That I wasn't completely honest in answering?

"How much area does this bottle cover, and how many are there?" Grigori asked Zalia as he considered his options.

Before Rhys could answer, Zalia shook her head and smiled. "That's it, Gareth. This isn't the military, nor is it your typical Guild. Many of us have secrets, and we all vary in skills and experience. Silver Chimera is not a Guild dedicated to being the best fighter, nor is it so dependant on the past that we require background checks. At Silver Chimera, we look towards the future. This Guild is a place where people with nowhere to go can call home. But that doesn't mean the test was easy, my child. Rhys has turned down countless applicants before."
She turned to Grigori. "There's enough here for all of your face, and some of your neck, or a similarily sized part of your body. Just pour the liquid directly onto the skin. It won't even hurt. However, for severe injuries or scars, you'll need to use the full dosage. Normal Ambrosia can be purchased just about anywhere. But this kind needs to be specially prepared, and preparing it is tricky, and requires a specific kind of Magic. As of now, the only Wizard we've been able to find who can prepare it is our own resident Doctor. But I'm sure he'd be more than happy to make a supply for you."

"I wasn't asking for me." Grigori told Zalia. "Does Eden still have her mark?"

"Well... If you say so," said Gareth. "I'm grateful that you've accepted meñ at any rate. Thank you."
Even if being that trusting of a stranger is asking for someone specializing in cloak and daggers to infiltrate and stab people in the back... But that's none of my business, and I'm not going to squander this chance.

"She does," Zalia answered softly. "Whether or not she wants it to be healed, however... That I can't say. Feel free to talk to her about it later, if you wish. But for now, she needs rest more than anything. It can wait, child."
She glanced over at Gareth, then turned to Rhys. "Rhys, I'm assigning you to be Gareth's mentor."
Rhys already knew exactly what that entailed, so while he guided Gareth away on a tour of the Guild, Zalia turned back to Grigori. "Would you like some more time to decide, Grigori? There's no rush. Even if you decide not to join, I'm not going to simply kick you out. You can stay here until we can find you a place of your own in the city, and I will do everything in my power to help get you everything you might need."

"Keep the Ambrosia, please." Grigori shook his head at Zalia. "At least until Eden has her trial."
There was a pause as Grigori looked away for a bit to think.
"I will stay here, but I want Eden's permission before I join. After all..."

Leone springs up. She casually walks over to exchange the training rapier for her real one as she speaks. "My, my. You certainly know how to leave a lady wanting more, Sweetie. But you're right, breakfast is probably prepared. Perhaps tonight, when only the stars are watching, we can give Atticus a sound thrashing for spying on us. Don't try to run away, you're already found out. If you breathe a word of what you saw Rio anyone, especially your brother, the consequences shall be quite severe."

Atticus ohased through the ceiling with a nonchalant expression. "You'd give ME a beating? I didn't see anything, so I assumed you two... Er... Finished minutes before I phased in. Breakfast is ready, by the way." He informed, looking between the two with hesitance.
Hecate nodded absentmindedly, replacing the axe with her little fan. "I'll have to agree with Leone. What if we weren't finished and you phased in?" She shook her head sadly. Atticus another casually.
"I'd have gotten it memorized." And then he phased away before retribution could come to him.

The next few days were not very eventful in Hecate's opinion. It was basically waiting for the quest date to come closer and closer. And finally it did come. Hecate got dressed in her usual fashion that morning, stepping downstairs.
She seemed to be the only one there... At least until Atticus phased through the wall. "Morning, Hecate." The twin mumbled, getting ready to make himself something to eat. He was followed by Aldous not long after. "Odd. Leone isn't up yet." He yawned.

Leone spent the next three days attempting to master her new Ghost Sword spell. It was finally starting to be relatively convincing. The trick was knowing how much light to reflect and how much to phase through. Shadows make it much trickier, so she spent a lot of time wandering through town trying to adjust to changing light conditions. Turns out some of the townspeople were less than appreciative of having a nearly-invisible woman skulking around, and the guild got a few complaints, but there were no major incidents. The hatch to the training room suddenly snaps open. Vallory emerges first, carrying a large, empty pot that smells of very strong coffee. Leone emerges right behind her, carrying a small tray with a pair of fancy cups. Her normal field gear is replaced with a frilly, light-blue dress with white trim and frilled shoulders and a wide waist, complete with tall stockings and matching high heels. Her hair has been tamed to lie completely flat, even despite the early-morning warm-up. As always, her red choker is tied around her neck and her rapier on her hip, and a pair of dangling earrings complete the outfit.
"Oh? You're all up?" Vallory asks. "Wonderful. I was just coming to wake you and start breakfast. You'll all want to eat before heading out, I'm sure."
Breakfast ends with just a few moments before the VIP was due to arrive. Leone spends the time fiddling with her outfit, her hair, her accessories, her gear, the pack containing her field gear, Aldous' hair, Hecate's outfit, Hecate's hair - stop biting your fingers! - Atticus'... Well, Leone abandoned Atticus as a lost cause.
At 4AM sharp, there's a series of short, sharp knocks on the door. Vallory answers the door. A tall woman is waiting in a tight-fitting white shirt and grey jacket and a matching, form-fitting skirt. Dark brown panty hose and black heels minimize her exposed skin. She has blonde hair in a bundle of curls, tightly framing her face. Her blue eyes scan the area impassively, and her face is a mask of neutrality. She's surrounded by several men in armor. One of the armored men salutes Vallory. "We've delivered the VIP. Please acknowledge that she's now in your care."
"We have indeed received her," Vallory announces, eyeing the woman. The warrior salutes, then turns and marches off. His men follow suite. Vallory gives the woman a small bow. "Please, enter, Mrs. Marian Vallast."
"Thank you," the woman answers in an airy voice. "Ms. Vallory Marsh, I assume?"
"Of course. I will be receiving you on behalf of Guild Master Sounders. He's... preoccupied. Something important, I'm sure," Vallory answers.
"I'm sure," Marian says. "...he's still asleep," her tone adds. She steps in, her gait itself exuding an air of confidence.
Leone is the first to greet her. "Mrs. Vallast," she says, giving a deep curtsy.

Before anyone else can greet Marian, she raises her hand for silence. "Please, forgo the formalities for now. The ship, Mermaid's Folly, will set sail at exactly 5AM. Knowing that captain, a few moments before. I wish to ensure we're on-board before she embarks."
"Very well, then." Vallory adjusts a stray hair. "Alicorn Wing, your mission is to escort Mrs. Marian Vallast safely to Rosebud by way of sea, onboard Mermaid's Folly. There will be no problems, I'm sure, but I expect you to remain vigilant. On your way, then."
It's a short jog to the docks from Alicorn Wing's guild hall, and Marian sets a quick pace, marching along the road with authority, despite the odd hour and the thick fog. Hecate and Leone take either side of her, with Atticus and Aldous trailing a bit behind. No one dares break the near-silence interrupted only by the rhythmic clicking of shoes on street.
The ship comes into view quickly. It's not exactly easy to miss, being the largest ship currently in port. A metal monstrosity, complete with a sizable, rotating cannon, it looks more like a small warship than a trading vessel. A rather lewd picture of a mermaid is painted on the side, barely poking out of the water, right beneath "MERMAID'S FOLLY" written in bright red.
The white-haired captain greets the group at the bottom of the gangplank, bowing deeply and removing his hat. "Madame Vallast. Welcome aboard my humble vessel. A cabin has been prepared for you on the second level, and breakfast is waiting." He's wearing a very formal-looking suit, covered in polished buttons and medals.
"Captain Rallos. It's been far too long. We simply must catch up," Marian answers.
"Of course, ma'am. I've a fine scotch I've been saving for a special occasion. After we're in the open sea, I'll stop by your cabin for a spell." the captain promises.
"'Ma'am,' 'Madame Vallast.' I think we're beyond that at this point, Ian. You've been in our employ for... hm. My, longer than I've been married. It's 'Marian' to you, Dear," Marian says candidly.
"Marian it is, then. Well then, shall we be off? The cargo's loaded, so we'll set off as soon as you're ready," Ian suggests.
"Of course," Marian says. "I'll retire to my cabin to rest for a while - it's been a long journey. As for you..." she turns to the Alicorn Wing members and thinks for a moment.
Finally, Marian points to Atticus. "You. You stand guard outside my cabin." "Where the least people will see you," her tone suggests. "As for the rest of you, patrol the ship however you see fit. Make your presence known."
Without waiting for a response, she turns and begins up the gangplank. "Of course, Madame Vallast," Leone calls after her, her voice cheerful and friendly. "Permission to come aboard, Captain Rallos?"
"Granted," he says tersely. "Just you kids keep out of my crew's way. Once we're out to sea, strut about however you like, but keep to the upper deck while we're setting out."
The crew of the Mermaid's Folly handle themselves expertly, preparing the ship to launch in a matter of minutes. The ship steams out of port nearly half an hour ahead of schedule. The shore soon fades into the distance as the large ship moves beyond the sandbars into open ocean and deep waters. The waves are particularly small today, not that a ship the size of the Mermaid's Folly would notice a few large waves.
The sun comes up over the open water, with nothing but water and sky as far as the eye can see. Leone keeps to the upper deck. The cannon on the main deck is quite impressive... and perhaps a bit overkill for a merchant vessel. "You never know what you'll come across out here!" a sailor tells her, as if reading her mind.
She considers taking a trip to the crow's nest, but... not in this outfit. Four hours into the voyage, Leone stops by the bridge to observe their operations and make sure everything is going smoothly.

Atticus stood guard at the VIP's door, priding himself for having been chosen. It should have wen obvious to Aldous that his twin was simply more handsome than him, and that's why the VIP had chosen him to guard her door. Atticus laughed to himself quietly, which may or may not have been the wisest move... As some people aboard tossed him odd and frightened looks. ------- As for Aldous, he was making his rounds around the ship with Hecate. When he went north, she would go south, and it ended up like a circle as they made their way around the entire ship. They crossed paths countless times, yet neither said anything to each other. Hecate was considering that she probably shouldn't have brought her normal attire, but she didn't really own anything fancy like Leone.
Hecate narrowed her eyes. As long as she was in the guild, her fears were taken care of. And even if she didn't trust any of them to watch her back—as evidenced when she would look behind her when Aldous passed her—she was still somewhat dependent on them. And the last person she had depended on.... Well, they had vanished without a word, so she wasn't going to make an effort to get close to any of them.
If they learned anymore than necessary, they would probably do the same. And she wasn't about to have that happen to her again. She looked at the sharp edge of her fan. Well, there was only one solution if it happened again.
