"Coworkers, I guess," answered Gareth. "You're right in that I never actually hated them, I just never really felt much for them."

Orion tensed once more, but he relaxed after a few moments. He looked over at Eden. "Are you comfortable with that, Eden? If you aren't, then I'm not going anywhere."
------
Again, Rhys simply nodded. "As I thought. You seem like a decent young man. But before you speak with Zalia again, there's something you should know: We at Silver Chimera do not see each other as coworkers, or even mere friends. We are family, in every sense of the word. Indeed, even blood in some cases. We do not stay in this Guild of ours because we need the work. We stay because it is our haven. Our sanctuary. Our home. And for some of us, it is the only home we have ever known. It is because of this that we are so strong. Because we stand united, no matter how harsh the storm. Tell me Gareth, is this something that calls out to you? Can you adapt to such an environment? We do not need a loner who rushes into danger at the first hint of treasure, without even consulting his teammates. However... We always welcome a new addition to the family."

Eden thought for some time about that before she finally looked Grigori in the eyes. "Could Zalia stay here?"

"If it's what you wish." Grigori nodded before looking back over to Zalia.

Never been a fan of being given a sermon to.
"I see," said Gareth. "Well, I can't say I've ever experienced such sentiments among guildmates, but then again I've only been in one other guild that I wasn't too fond of. I'll be willing to give it a try. I normally try to get along with people anyway, so I think becoming part of this 'family' won't be a problem."

Zalia nodded. "That's fine. I already know about Eden's past, and Siren Scale. I won't interrupt. I'll just be here to make sure everything stays civil. Orion? Would you give us the room? We won't be long."
Orion gave a subtle nod and rose to his feet. With one last glance towards Eden, he quit the room, quietly shutting the door behind him.
She still doesn't trust me... Even after everything, she still doesn't trust me... I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. So why does it still hurt so much?
He had a vague awareness that someone was asking him something- Cenric?- but he didn't respond. Instead, he walked up the stairs to his room, and closed the door behind him. He sat on the edge of his bed and placed his head in his hands, trying his best to cope with his tumultuous emotions.
------
Rhys inclined his head to the young man, and smiled knowingly. "That's good enough for me. I apologize for the speech. My poet's soul tends to get away from me at times. But that's enough jibber jabber for now. Captain Senna's tent is right over here."

"Eden, I thought you were dead." Grigori put it quite bluntly as he placed his hands on his knees. "That's what everyone at the guild was told. They had a burnt corpse that they stored in a cell that was supposed to be you to scare anyone who thought of leaving like you did. I lost anyone I could call a friend shortly after that. Artyom and Yaroslava killed each other in a double suicide, Nonna was suffering from dysentery and abandoned in the woods on a mission, Josef had his skull cracked open during a brawl, Tijan died in a house fire during a burglary, and I don't... I don't want to talk about what happened to Svitlana. Siren Scale was declining in power, and with each botched mission and lost slave, the guild grew more desperate."
Grigori shifted in his seat before sighing and looking at the floor.
"Months after you had supposedly died, I happened to see you by chance." He looked back up again at Eden as he continued. "You were on the second floor balcony of some inn or café, and part of your brand was exposed. Though I still don't know why you chose to join Siren Scale, there was some, peace? Satisfaction? I'm not sure what I felt. Knowing you had escaped and were alive brought something back to me."
He stopped for a bit and looked at the floor again, lost in thought.

Hecate stood there, still crouching. How could she stop the blade... Hm. She didn't have anything to defend herself with so. She stood her ground and glared. Oh well, time to get rough.

Leone attacked with her rapier just as Hecate sprung towards her. Her thrust barely grazed Hecate's shoulder as Hecate slammed into her. The force of the collision knocked the wind out of Leone, and the pair went tumbling end over end. When the dust settled, Hecate found herself on top. Leone struggled against the weight, but the most she could do was feebly tap Hecate's back with her rapier. After a few seconds of futility, Leone happened to notice something in the ceiling just behind Hecate's head. Leone's eyes narrowed, but she quickly masked her reaction.
Leone let the rapier fall from her hand. "Oh, my, Hecate, your might is simply overwhelming! Very well, I submit myself to you! Claim your spoils, but I prithee treat me gently!" she declared over-dramatically. Under her breath, she whispered to Hecate. "Atticus is half-phased through the ceiling above you..."

Hecate didn't seem to acknowledge Leone's warning, but she did get off her. "Well, I guess that's enough training for the day then, my love. You've learned a valuable lesson in how you can use your body as a weapon. I hope you'll commit it to memory." She winked playfully.
Playing this little game would be fun at the expense of the guild.

"But what happened to you after that, Grigori?" she asked.

"I tried to leave." Grigori looked back up again at Eden. "I was stupid and made my way back to my old village. Everything was gone and had been that way for at least several years. Trees and vines were growing over the ashes of my family's home, and everything of value was already taken except for a metal safe. It was easy to open, and inside were my father's notes and an envelope that was supposed to be given to me on my 10th birthday. The envelope contained a pre-written letter of admission to Pergrande's top magic academy. I told him before that I wanted to learn magic, but he taught me astronomy instead. He didn't know magic, but he did his best. He wanted me to pursue my dreams that he couldn't help me fulfill."
Grigori's breath staggered heavily as he shook.
"It turns out my mother knew magic. She was an alumna of the magic academy." He explained as he scratched his forehead with his arm for a moment. "She didn't teach me any so I could develop a better relationship with my father, and so that he could help me learn magic in the long run. Before they were killed and I was taken, they finished something together. Those notes weren't my father's research, but magic for me to learn. I stayed there for a week learning all I could from it. Everything my dad had taught prepared me for learning the magic that he and my mother created. I took too long though. They found me, brought me back, and you know what they did."

"Grigori... I'm so sorry for what they did to you. I wish we could have met after you escaped, because I would have helped you. I'm so sorry."

"Well, we're here now." Grigori calmly looked at her. "Do you want to see my face?"

"Is it... bad?" she asked softly. "What did they do to disfigure you so badly?"

"It's not what they did to my face." Grigori shook his head about as he leaned in. "Shortly before they found me, I tried to burn the mark off of my face to disguise myself. It did... It didn't work out. That caused most of the damage, but they did the rest."

"I-... I can't... I can't do it..." she said as she squeezed her eyes shut, clearly very disturbed by what she was imagining, though it was mostly because of the pain she knew he must have been in. She then stood up from her chair, in such a rushed that she nearly knocked it over. "I need to go, I'm sorry!"
Eden fled from the room, unshed tears stinging in her eyes. Talking to Grigori had brought back so many painful memories for her, but the most painful then were the memories of talking to him those years ago when he was still the Grigori she knew, not the disfigured, bitter person she assumed he had become. She wasn't thinking about where she would go, and even though she just walked without knowing where she really was, she wasn't surprised when she looked up and saw that her wandering had taken her directly to Orion's door. She didn't bother to knock before she entered, and she sat next to him on the bed without saying a word.
"Orion... I wish I could have taken you up on that offer. I need you there with me to give me strength, but I knew that it wasn't a good idea since you and Grigori don't get along well. And I-... I wanted to be able to tell you about my past directly. I didn't want to risk you hearing parts of it from someone else. I wasn't ready for that. Orion, I might as well tell you now, while I'm already hurting, so I don't have to go through it again later. Is that-... is that alright?"

"Eden..." Grigori whispered with a look between disappointment and pity as he curled up in his chair slightly.

"Don't take it to heart child," Zalia told Grigori gently. "She's been through so much in such a short time, and she's having difficulty processing it all. She's hurting, and she can't bear to see what happened. Let her calm down. She needs time to confront her past."
------
Orion simply stared at her for a moment, then nodded. He turned to face her on the bed and gently pulled her into his arms, so her head was resting on his chest. "Of course it's alright," he whispered softly to her. "And I understand, Eden. I do. Whenever you're ready... I'll listen."
... Here I am, worried about her ignoring me, or not trusting me, when she's going through this... In hindsight, it should have been obvious that was why she didn't want me in the room. Since when did I become so... Blind? So Selfish? So... Petty? What's happened to me?

"There's still one more thing she needs to know." Grigori sighed to himself before turning to Zalia. "About what happened when I finally did escape."
