(Continued)
You awake to perhaps the most pleasant sensation of your very long life. You lay in your old bed, beneath a warm comforter, and great swaths of sunlight stream in through an open window, along with a cool mountain breeze. You look around your childhood room, stunned beyond belief to be back in your childhood home, this cabin in the mountains, after all these years. A large paw rests gently in your hair, but you don't mind. In fact, you rather like it. You turn your head slightly, to see Lahar resting in an old wooden chair at your bedside, in all his golden glory. His helmet lies on a nearby nightstand, and he's snoring softly. He obviously fell asleep while watching over you, and you feel a surge of warmth. He always was so very protective of you...
"You silly man," you breathe quietly, throwing the blankets off. "You need to learn to take better care of yourself." No doubt he hasn't slept a wink since finding you. You gently disengage his hand from your hair, and rise to your knees. Careful not to wake him, you place a gentle kiss on his lips."That's for saving me."
You leave the bedroom and head into the living room, surprised by the state the cabin was in. If you didn't know any better, you'd swear people were still living here... Of course. It must be your brother. He must have stayed here recently. You find your leather pack by the door, along with Lahar's equipment, and you briefly rummage through it. Ah, there it is! You retrieve the ornate golden seal from your bag, holding it gently in your palm. You simply stare at it for a few moments, listening to thrum in your hand, almost like a heartbeat. You know the legends of these particular seals, but you've never put much stock in them. Until now. If you have any hope of defeating Ephidel once and for all, you'll need any extra edge you can get. You find yourself closing your eyes, and for the first time in over a thousand years, you find yourself praying. Please... Just this once, grant me my wish. Grant me the strength I need.
A brilliant golden light explodes from the seal as you open your eyes, blinding and enveloping you, filling the room like a small sun. You feel yourself changing, your power expanding. The experience is exhilarating. When the light clears, you give a small gasp. You are stronger, more lithe. Dark purple runes, glowing with ancient power, line your arms, legs, and neck. Two transparent wings sprout from your back, twenty foot long wings of crackling energy. Your armor has changed, too. Your once glistening silver armor has darkened to a pitch black, though it retains a similar shape; spikes protude from your shoulders and elbows, and the heels of your boots are adorned with jet black wings. A beautiful emerald circlet now adorns your forehead, as does one last rune: a dark purple effigy of the Draconic word for chaos is now branded into your forehead. You look at yourself in the full body mirror at the side of the room, completely in awe. Even your once silver eyes have changed, as now they glow a fierce purple, and your formerly golden hair is now white as snow. You take a deep, calming breath and allow your new power to settle. Instantly the runes fade and your eyes return to normal, as does your hair. Still, your armor remains this new midnight, and the circlet and brand on your forehead remain as well.
"Enjoying your new look, my goddess?"
You turn at Lahar's familiar voice, to see him leaning against the doorway to the bedroom, his arms folded across his chest. You turn contrite almost immediately. "Sorry, Ly. I didn't mean to wake you."
He grins happily at your old nickname for him, which counts for something. At least he's not mad. "Wow... You haven't called me that in years. I'm glad you're back Rata, I truly am. And it's alright." He suddenly shrugs. "Not even I could sleep through a supernova, and it's high time we hit the road. Just warn me the next time you feel like inviting the Sun over for dinner, eh?"
You giggle a bit. "Will do. But... Do you mind if we stay here one more night? You and I could both use some rest, and I'm not very eager to go demon hunting with only an hour or so left of light."
Lahar shrugs again, and yawns. "Fine with me. Just don't stay up too late, eh?"
You glare at him. "What are you, my father?"
Lahar grins at you, and you both laugh.

You awake early the next morning, early enough that it's still dark outside. Slowly, you leave the bed and quietly dress in your armor. You pad into the living room, careful not to wake the stubborn oaf on the couch, and quietly open the door. A rush of cool, moist air greets you as you step outside, and you quickly close the door behind you, easing it shut. The light from the half moon provides just enough to light your surroundings, and the lone path down the mountain. Your destination lies on the opposite side of the mountains however, and you walk only far enough from the cabin so that your transformation won't wake Lahar. You shift into your dragon form, allowing yourself a few brief moments of surprise at your new appearance. Your form is much larger now, more powerful, more streamlined. Your scales, while formerly silver, are now a dark purple, almost black. Your neck is longer, more serpentine, and long jagged spikes adorn your back. A single twisted horn extends from your forehead, as black as the Void itself, and your eyes glow a fierce red. Your underbelly is bright crimson, and your new wings are almost bat-like. You would prove a terrifying sight, you realize, when seen from far below. While flying at night, your dark scales would be virtually invisible; only your glowing eyes and bright red underside would be visible.
You grin deviously at the thought. You could have some serious fun in this new form of yours. Not wanting to linger any longer, lest you risk waking a giant, you rocket into the pre-dawn sky, high above the mountain peaks. You allow yourself to glide for a few minutes, enjoying the sensation of the wind caressing your wings. Then, without warning or hesitation, you plummet towards the northern half of the mountains, eager to test your new speed.
You barely contain the urge to holler in delight. Your new speed, as it turns out, is phenomenal. You easily shatter the sound barrier, and a sonic boom tears through the early morning air. Before long, you're circling over the southern stretch of woodland, hovering over a familiar cabin, a cabin you last visited only a few days ago. You land gently in the clearing, careful to be as quiet as possible. If you know the lone occupant of the cabin at all, he's probably already up cooking breakfast, that stubborn old fool. You flash back into your human form, and approach the cabin, surprised to find it dark. Huh... Maybe he isn't up yet? Hesitant, you knock softly on the door. No answer. You wait a few minutes, then try again, this time a bit louder. Okay, maybe he isn't up after all... You'll come back later.
You turn to leave, but something stops you. You can't explain it. Something just feels... Wrong. You look down at your hand, only to see it covered in dust. That's odd... Why would there be dust on your hand? Gregory kept this place immaculate. You look around at the cabin once more, much closer this time, and your heart starts to pound. What... What is the meaning of this?
Now that you're aware something is amiss, a veil around the cabin seems to lift, and you see it as it truly is for the first time. Most of the wood is ancient and rotten, and parts of the cabin have collapsed altogether, including a huge section of the roof. Spiderwebs litter almost every corner, and the once trimmed grass is now overgrown, so much so that the entire front porch is encased in a sea of weeds. No smoke billows from the chimney now, all that's left is a crumbling pillar of rotten wood and moldy stone. Why... Why, just from the outside appearance alone, it looks like no one has lived here in centuries.
Admittedly a little freaked out, you knock on the door again, but this time the entire door falls over, right off it's rusted hinges. The door lands with a solid crack, splintering into a million shards. The inside of the cabin proves no better, in fact, it's in an even worse state. The floor is moldy and cracked, with weeds growing up through every corner. No trace of any furniture remains, nor does any trace remain of the kind old man who rescued you. Piles of old ragged linen lay clumped in one corner, nothing more than torn pieces of cloth, yellow with age. But here in this pile, something catches your eye. You stride over and bend down to pick it up, discovering an old letter. Most of the letter is too faded to read, but some words are still legible, if barely.
To... My... Iris...With Lo..
Thirteen long days... Since... Began... My search. But... Every... Closer... One step... I will... Find... Even if Grancel... Burns... I will.. Yours ... Ever, Gregori...
That's it. The rest is completely ineligible. But what shocks you the most, are the two names, as clear as day. Two names you know very well. Iris, the name of the Saintess who disappeared when you were a child, and Gregori, the name of the madman who ordered your execution. But... What really confuses you, perhaps even more than the names, is the time stamp. For that too is unmistakably clear, and it reads 1243 1E, 5th Age. That... That's only a few years before the Great War began... But that would mean...
Suddenly, the image of the old man who saved you appears too familiar, as if you had met him before last week. Your eyes widen in realization and the letter tumbles from your grasp. You bolt from that cursed place, that haunted cabin in the woods, as fast as your legs can carry you. You immediately change forms and launch into the air, flying faster than you ever have in your life. Your thoughts spin mercilessly in your mind, and you desperately try to push them aside. But, no matter what you do, you always come back to one thought: Somehow, someway, the old man who saved you is the same man who killed you. Gregory and Gregori are one and the same.

Meanwhile, at the Culture's stronghold on Caer Paveil...
Charon leans back against his obsidian throne, deep in thought. While the good doctor assures him the plan is still flawless, this new turn of events complicates matters... Greatly. First those blasted relics thwart his plans to resurrect the Shepherd, and now this. Charon grinds his teeth. For the first time in eons, his calm demeanor and icy facade shatters. For the first time in years, something has actually managed to upset him. And now he's royally pissed off.
"Well, someone certainly looks like he could use a hug."
Charon merely glares at the much shorter man. "Don't test my patience Jeckel. I don't have much left."
Jeckel shrugs the threat off, clearly unconcerned. "Yes yes, I can see that. How about turning that ire elsewhere, if I may be so bold? We still have plenty of cards up our sleeves, old friend."
Charon arches a single steely eyebrow. "What do you suggest?"
"Split their forces right down the middle," he says, grinning. "After all, our plan is only jeopardized if all our enemies join together, right? So we simply need to assure that never happens."
"Oh? And how, pray tell, do you propose we do that?"
Jeckel's grin only widens. "Unleash the Unknown Element upon the Nords. That will slow them down. Send the Hunter to plague the forces of the Dragon Emperor. And let my Legretta and her pet hunt our newest problem. Ephidel is too emotionally invested in that one."
Hmm... "The Hunter, you say? Wouldn't that be... Unwise? Considering his past with the Chaosborn's son? If the Unknown Element was driven away, then surely he would fare no better."
An excited glint blossoms in the mad doctor's eyes, the glint of some far fetched, maniacal plan. "Oh, but don't you see? That's the beauty of it. We only need to slow them down a bit. Change the pace of the dance if you will, to something we favor more. The Hunter is perfect for sowing destruction from afar, and staying out of sight. And without a face to face meeting like before, there's little chance of a repeat performance. And while the Unknown Element and the Nords tire themselves out fighting each other, I'll pay a visit to the Demon King's tomb."
Charon's eyes widen, and he grins in delight. "You mean to resurrect Fomortiis?"
Jeckel laughs, a hair raising laugh born of twisted joy and wild excitement. "No, I'll leave that to the Chaosborn!"
Charon's eyes widen even further, as he realizes the true brilliance of the doctor's plan, and he too laughs.

Sorry about the delay, I've just been so damn busy lately... I have a million things to do, and only a limited amount of time to do so. Seriously, between the constant worrying, reoccurring nightmares, zero to little down time, and having to do everything on my own, I'm so damn tired it's not even funny... Sorry. You guys probably don't want to listen to an old man gripe. I'll get working on the update now.

When we last saw our heroes, they had stormed Belial's Temple, in an effort to uncover the truth of this enigmatic other world and the horrifying Windbrook Experiment. After managing to outsmart the temple guards, our heroes suddenly find themselves locked in a confrontation with the Dark Lord himself. And now, the conclusion...
---------- POV Leah ----------
"Hello father," Kara replies coldly, her tone as icy and indifferent as the northern wastes of Jotunheim.
You blink. Twice. It can't be... "Um... Lazzy? Are you seeing this too?" You whisper in disbelief, keeping your voice low.
He gives a subtle nod, and when he answers, his whispered words mirror how you feel. "Yes, but don't look to me for answers this time, Kitten. I'm just as confused as you."
You look at the figure on the black granite throne once more, hoping to see the appearance change, praying it's only a trick of the light, or of your exhausted mind. Unfortunately, lady mercy seems to be curiously absent today, as Belial remains exactly the same. To your immense shock and confusion, Belial looks almost identical to Jeckel of the Culture. Heck, the mad doctor and Belial could be twins. The few differences between them are subtle, and you would really have to stare to notice. While Jeckel's hair is a frizzy white mess, Belial's appears more silver, and it's neatly combed. Belial also sports a neat goatee and thick sideburns, but the differences end there. Either Belial hasn't noticed you yet-likely due to his fixation on his daughter- or he doesn't deem you worthy of his attention. You pray it's the latter, as you're absolutely terrified he'll recognize you. First you find your name in an old diary here, Strauss' diary no less, and now you find out Strauss looks exactly like the man who claims to be your father? Surely that can't be mere coincidence..
Belial shakes his head sadly, and the action is so uncannily familiar, you shiver. "Oh, my dear girl... Are you still mad at me, even after all these years? Whatever am I going to do with you..." He gives an exaggerated sigh, leaning back in his chair like he doesn't have a care in the world. "Oh well, I suppose it can't be helped. I doubt you've come all this way for a family reunion."
Kara calmly shakes her head, and Belial sighs again. You would almost believe he's saddened by Kara's reply. Almost. "Thought not. Too bad, really. I could use the company. Ruling the world is such a lonely job."
Kara opens her mouth to reply, but before she even gets the chance, the mad deity suddenly leaps to his feet and claps his hands excitedly. "Well then! Enough of my sulking! Would you care to introduce me to your friends, dear? I don't believe we've had the chance to meet yet."
Kara looks like she'd rather go jump in a boiling pot of holy water, but she begrudgingly concedes. "Fine. Dad, this is Leah and Lazareth. Leah and Lazareth, Dad." As Kara turns her dark eyes on you, she mouths Can we kill him now? Please?
Despite how freaked out you are, you manage to chuckle. "Hmm? Did you say Leah?"
Belial focuses his unsettling gaze on you, and your palms begin to sweat. This is ridiculous... Are you actually... Afraid? Belial suddenly takes a step forward, and you suddenly feel like running. "No, it couldn't be... Could it? Is it possible? Could I truly be so fortunate?"
Belial takes a few more steps towards you, and your heart begins to pound. He takes one last step, only to find his path barred by a menacing giant. And Lazzy doesn't look very happy. "Take one more step Belial, and I'll splinter your bloody remains across the room," Lazareth growls fiercely, his deep voice demonic and powerful.
Belial actually seems to consider this for a few moments. "Will you, now? Ah yes, I know you. You're one of the three primal deities of Asgard, if my memory serves. Lazareth, was it? The god of flames?" Belial's stormy black eyes suddenly narrow. "You're a long way from home, Asgardian. You'd do well to remember that."
Wait... So Belial didn't know you were coming? So what's with the freak show outside then? Belial turns his attention to you once more, and a maniacal grin spreads across his pale face. Though he doesn't try to come any closer, thankfully. "Yes... Now I'm sure of it. Oh, how fate smiles on me this day! I can't believe you survived!"
"What the hell are you talking about?!" You snap. You have no patience for these games.
Belial appears legitimately confused by your response. "You mean to say you truly don't remember? Such a pity. You were my best work, my crowning achievement. My masterpiece. Decades upon decades of research led to your development, the development of the perfect weapon. You are Project X, otherwise known as Ultima, or the Diamond Weapon. Though it seems you've lost the majority of your power.... Gah, such a waste! All those years of work... Ruined!!"
Your head spins. Project... X? Diamond Weapon? What the hell is going on?! Belial continues to ramble on about his work, completely ignoring you, and a fierce throbbing migraine begins to form in your skull. You gasp and clutch your head, doubling over in agony. Gods, why won't he shut up? Why... Won't... He... "SHUT UP!!!!" You scream, and the temple explodes.

A pillar of pure energy bursts forth from you, and before you even have a chance to comprehend what's happening, an entire section of the temple is blown sky high. When you finally regain control of your senses, you find yourself on your knees, surrounded by some type of force field, as rubble and debris rain down around you. Lazzy stands just behind you, protectively shielding you from the fallout of your outburst. You look around at the devastation, eyes wide, as you realize what you just did. Your little outburst just cost you the mission. Every demon within a hundred mile radius must have heard that. Great, just freaking great...
You find Kara floating just a few inches away, unharmed, though you weren't particularly worried in the first place. Considering, you know, she's a ghost. But... Where the hell did that bastard Belial go? "Leah? Are you alright?"
Lazzy's concerned voice releases you from your thoughts, and you smile. "I... I'm fine Lazzy. Sorry. I messed up."
You allow him to help you up, and Lazzy immediately pulls you into his arms for a tight hug. "Don't ever let anyone tell you who you are, Leah. You are defined by your choices in life, by who you surround yourself with, and by how you live your life. Not by your past. Remember that."
You take a shaky breath and nod, feeling a little bit foolish. In hindsight, you can't believe you let an obvious liar effect you so. Now that you're calmer, you can easily spot a myriad of holes in Belial's story. You feel like such a child. So much for the unshakable King of Heroes.
"Well, isn't this touching! It looks like you found someone to take care of you, after all. And it seems you've retained some of your powers too! Fantastic! Absolutely fantastic!"
You step out of Lazzy's arms, your confidence restored, and your anger building. You search the ruined hall for the source of the voice, but Belial remains hidden, the coward. "Where are you?! Show yourself, Belial!!"
A mocking laugh echoes across the charred walls, though the laugh's owner remains conspicuously absent. "All in good time, my dear!! All in good time! But for now... How about we play a game?"
You stifle a groan. "I don't suppose I have much of a choice, do I?"
Belial cackles again, and you catch the wild excitement in his voice. And it really freaks you out. "Not if you want what you came for! The rules are simple. All you have to do is find me, and survive the trip. See? Simple! Win, and I'll tell you everything you want to know. I'll even show you the way home! Lose however... And you'll never see your home again. Well? Either play, or be square!"
Your narrow your eyes and clench your fists. "Oh, I'll play your stupid game. And I'll win. And then I'm going to kill you."
Belial chuckles. "Now that's what I like to hear! Come, lady Ultima! I am so going to enjoy this! And, because I'm nice, I'll give you a head start. But don't linger too long! Even I can't keep my guards at bay forever! See you at the finish line!"
The voice abruptly quiets, and Lazzy promptly banishes the force field around you. "Let's go Leah. We need to hurry."
You tend to agree. "I know Lazzy. Kara? Do you think you could lead us again?"
She nods, though she doesn't look too confident... "I... I think so. I'll try my best."
That's good enough for you. Kara hasn't given you cause to doubt her yet. "Fair enough. Lead the way."

I'm having a bit of difficulty with this next scene, so pardon the delay. Here, an infobump as recompense.
Belial: A dark deity of foreboding power, who rules over the World Below. He bears an uncanny resemblance to Doctor Jeckel, and it's unclear in fact, whether he is a deity at all. His true nature is an absolutely mystery to all but a few. Long ago, when mad Doctor Strauss tried to seize ultimate power, an accident caused Strauss and Belial to merge. Since then, the two minds share the same body, and this has caused Belial to go insane. He is known for fierce, raging mood swings, which are actually arguments between his two minds and two personalities. Sharing the thoughts, experiences, and powers of two separate people however- a mad genius and a supposed deity- has lent him considerable power, and he isn't shy about using it. Curiously enough, it seems Strauss is the more dominant of the two personalities in recent years. Even stranger, it seems Ancient Lore once described Belial as a 'Benevolent King', and the World Below as a 'Lush green land of Elm and Oak', though whatever proof of this has long since faded. He called Leah 'Project X' and 'The Diamond Weapon', though whether these were just the insane ramblings of a mad man is unclear. What is clear, however, is that he appears to know the truth of Leah's past.
And now, for a little teaser. Everyone here caught the reference of the 'Diamond Weapon', yes? It's from Final Fantasy 7, if you didn't. For those of you who did, yes, the Ruby, Emerald, and Sapphire weapons also make an appearance as Legacy Bosses. And they are strong enough to make their namesakes proud.
Now, the Ruby Weapon and Sapphire weapons are already set in stone. Can you guess who they are? All the weapons have close ties with Leah, and you've already met the Ruby Weapon.
But here's the kicker: the Emerald Weapon isn't set yet. In fact, that will be the main attraction of tomorrow's anniversary topic! After all the other polls have closed, I will host the 'Emerald Weapon Poll'. Simply put, you all create your own character. Even your own back story, if you want. The most creative character will be declared the winner, and will feature in UB as the Emerald Weapon. You can choose whether the Emerald Weapon is only a boss, or whether he/she can become a PC. You can even determine how and when!
The winner will receive a few PMs from me, so we can collaborate in bringing the character to life. The character's Class must be 'Emerald Weapon', but you can choose the stats and skills for the class. Don't worry about spoilers, or being limited in your Back Story choices, as TEW's story is largely a blank slate; what little known about him/her is revealed by Belial at the end of this quest, so don't fret. Also, you can take your time in the character polls tomorrow. The topic and polls will remain open indefinitely, until a winner is declared for each poll.
So I hope I see everyone there!

In addition to my theory with the different colored eyes, Pontiff Edward "holds a golden scepter emblazoned with the largest ruby you've ever seen." when we first see him. It would only be fitting for the ruby weapon to have a giant ruby.

"Um... Are you sure you know where you're going?" You ask Kara dubiously.
Your friendly ghost looks around at the gloomy corridor, her eyes full of doubt. Great... Even Kara is doubting herself? You are so lost. "I... I think? Um... Sorry Leah. This place is completely different from how I remember it."
You heave a heavy sigh. Just flapping great... "So now what? Lazzy, can you sense Belial's location?"
He shakes his head, and you sigh. Again. "I'm afraid not, kitten. Belial was right when he said I'm a long way from home. This place... It's his territory. While my combat powers remain unaffected, most of my other powers are significantly reduced right now."
Damn... So now what? "Wait," Kara says suddenly, prompting you to turn to her. "This may sound odd, but some of these doors look familiar. I find it strange that my father would change this place so drastically, and yet still keep the same doors... Don't you?"
You narrow your eyes a bit. "What are you saying Kara?"
"That maybe this place isn't so different after all. If these doors are the same, then maybe... Just maybe... They aren't all he kept the same. We should hurry. I think I know where to go now."
A sudden, very loud methodical banging sounds behind you, almost like giant footsteps, but quicker... Your eyes suddenly widen in realization, and Lazzy practically shoves you down the hall. "GO!! I'll hold them off!"
You shake your head furiously, and draw your sword. "Don't be daft! I'm not leaving you behind!"
He looks at you then, his eyes brimming with adoration, and in that shocking moment, you realize you're falling for him. "He's right Leah!" Kara shouts, frantic. "At this rate, they'll be on us in no time! We need a distraction!"
"My Lazzy is NOT a distraction!!" You snap back, the ferocity of your response surprising Kara. "Nor is he bait! I will not leave him! I won't!!"
Lazzy suddenly pulls you into his arms for a fierce hug, and you clutch desperately at his hands. His hands... They're so much larger than yours... Oh Lazzy, when did you start depending on him so? "Don't worry kitten. I'll be just fine. They can't harm me."
"B-But you're weakened," you stammer, admittedly starting to panic a bit. Surely he wasn't going to force you to leave?
He grins at you, that signature grin of his, and your resolve hardens into diamond. You will NOT leave this man. "Even so. I'll be fine Leah. Trust me, alright? I won't leave you, I promise. But remember sweetheart, we're on a strict time schedule here. And you have a date with the devil to catch... Er, so to speak."
But... But... The sound of footsteps grows, until you hear a small army approaching, and you realize you have to make a decision fast.
A: Reluctantly obey, and split up. Lazzy can handle himself, and he can catch up later. B: Refuse. Stand and face the enemy together. The going will be easier anyway, if you can wipe out the dogs at your back. C: Attempt to block the passage behind you, by bringing down the ceiling.(RNG chance to work. Chance to work = Chosen character's Skill Stat. Can choose either Leah, Kara, or Lazareth.)
