We're not using encumbrance, right?

Just the standard weight rules. If we did, even the basic starting package of each class would cause encumbrance. However, we are doing weight limits. Your weight limit is your STR times 15.

AC is your Armor Class. It's equal to 10 + DEX Modifier (If applicable and some armors disallow them) + Armor Bonus with a few exceptions. DC is Difficulty Class, which refers to, at least for the application, what you need on a saving throw to avoid the spell effect. It's equal to 8 + Proficiency Bonus + Spellcasting Ability Modifier (INT for Wizards, WIS for Clerics and Druids, CHA for Bards, Sorcerers, and Warlocks). Features are bonuses from Backgrounds that you get. Criminals have Criminal Contacts, Folk Heroes have Rustic Hospitality, etc. Proficiencies are what your Proficiency bonus applies to. Each class gets two saving throws that their Proficiency Bonus applies to, along with several skills. Backgrounds also provide more skills. Your class description should have a chart detailing your Proficiency Bonus. It would seem that I need to seperate 3.5 and 5e in my head as well. :U *still hasn't looked at anything 5e* Go do that. It it was also Difficulty Class in 3.5e. So, here are some pre-made character sheets if anyone needs an example. For Skill proficiencies and saving throws, you only need to list your proficient ones. These sheets should be updated regularly and stored in a separate topic.

Are you using mobile?
Even then, they should still work.
One of them is a pdf just so you know.

Another thing on how Proficiencies work.
A character is Proficient in at least two saves, several skills, and weapons.
For Saving Throws and Skill Checks, you add your Proficiency bonus to your rolls, and the same applies to Attack Rolls when you use a weapon you are proficient with.
At 1st Level, you have a Proficiency bonus of 2. It goes up by one at about every 4th level.
You also add your Proficiency bonus to your Spell Save DCs (8 + Proficiency Bonus + Spellcasting Ability Modifier).
Armor Proficiency is different in that it means what kinds of armor you can wear.

Okay, so as to help people with backgrounds, I would like everyone to give me a basic summary of their character's past.
It doesn't have to give me too much, just some basic information, like if they were a soldier or a knight.

Have you read the rules?
There are some racial variants and races not included in the basic rules, but they are listed in the overview that I linked to.
I'm going to run a Tiefling, in case you wanted to know, even though a Half-Elf would be better stat-wise.

I'm not sure if I want to be a Dragonborn, a Mountain Dwarf, a Half Elf or a Half Orc.

For a Paladin?
Let's see, a Mountain Dwarf (+2 Con +2 Str right?) would be the best for ability scores, but the automatic weapon and armor proficiencies would be a waste. Half-Orc (+2 Str +1 Con?) would probably be the best choice because of Darkvision and the Diehard-like ability as the Dragonborn Breath Weapon isn't all too great. A Half-Elf works better as the support-focused Paladin (which we don't really need) by using the +2 Cha +1 Str and Con than the others, but lacks the awesome combat proficiencies of the others.
I might have some wrong info right now since I'm doing this all from memory since I'm in school right now. I hate SonicWALL.

Aha!
Google Translate is the perfect proxy!
I definitely suggestm Half-Orc, especially since Emperor will probably want a Dragonborn and racial diversity is always fun.

You're more or less correct. Half Orc also gets a bonus to critical damage with melee weapons, which would be useful. I'm just not sure if I want to be full melee.
So I heard I don't get a Paladin Mount in 5e, but can I still get a mount separately?

Yep.
My character is using a slightly altered version of the Merchant Background (variant of the Guild Artisan) and starts off with a donkey and a cart as one of his items. He doesn't ride the donkey though, as its just for pulling the cart. I think one of the backgrounds (maybe Soldier) starts you off with either a horse and a saddle. You should also be able to get a warhorse as a mount/minion. I'd be fine with giving you one if one of the backgrounds doesn't come with one (though that will be your feature if you want the same special abilities as a Paladin Mount). I don't know. I'll need to look at things a bit more.
I think you should go full melee/offense. We have support and healing, plus, that Oath of Blood Vengeance looks pretty neat.

Knight seems like an ideal Character Background... although I'm not sure if a Half-Orc respected nobleman would be possible in your setting. :X

Who says he can't be a respected Orc nobleman?
