"Shall we wait until the Enlightened make their move?" A sinister voice called out from a black void.
"Yes, this will be rather, enjoyable." A second, deeper voice replied.
"Why don't we just light them aflame?" A third, snake-like voice spoke.
"Don't be so hasty." The second responded as a shifting sound came from the darkness. "Under, what do you think?"
Silence lingered until the first voice spoke up again.
"Let us cast our gaze upon them for the time being, shall we?"
"Agreed." The other two voices answered.

"Get outta here runt!"
A body crashed face first into the ground. It turned over to smirk back at the elder man.
"Your daughter looked quite into the kiss my friend." The teen replied, quickly sprinting away as the man prepared to charge at him with a fist.
"I hate that damn boy." He muttered, slamming the door to his shop.
Said boy was quickly checking the money he had been able to take from the shopkeepers daughter. 800 gil he counted with a smug smile.
"Rasche strikes again." He chuckled.

As Christina began to shake off the grogginess of her sleep she saw Coco staring at her. "You crazy bird did you really have to squawk at me to get me up," Chris said to Coco. Coco replied with a happy squeal as she made her way to the door. "Really you impatient chocobo can't you give me a couple moments to get ready," as Chris got out of her bed wearing a simple cloth nightgown. "Yawn," Chris let out as she gathered her clothes. "Oh yeah that's right today is the day me and Coco leave on our journey," Chris said absent mindedly. Coco just gave her sister like come on already. "Fine you are right but I can't go like this I am a mess," Chris said as she made her way to get ready.
"I remember the first day my parents brought you home as a present," Chris said while remesing. "You were just a egg and I was so perplexed why my parents gave me an egg," Chris said while Coco just was squawking in excitement along Chris. "Just imagine one day when I went to go check on the egg just to see you in it's place," Chris said while tying her long blonde hair in a ponytail. "From the moment you hatched you been glued to my side and we had so many wonderful adventures together," Chris told Coco while she was putting on her favorite sky blue t-shirt. "You ready girl?" asked Coco who landed on her shoulder while Chris finished putting on her boots.
"Mom and dad about to leave now," Chris called out as she came down the stairs. "Aww they must have went to work already," Chris said in disappointment. Coco came up to Christina with a piece of paper in her mouth. "Hey let me see that," Chris said to Coco. "Meet us at the town entrance we have a surprise for you," love mom and dad. "Sigh they always had a dramatic flair to them," Chris said. "Ready Coco, oh yeah before we leave here you go," Christina said to Coco as she handed her some Greshia Greens.
"Can't believe today is the day goodbye house we had some good times," Chris said as she closed the door to her house.

"Mom and Dad," Chris said running towards her parents. "Aye here she is honey," Chris's dad ,Hector, called out to Christina's mom ,Lyn,. "I believe somebody owes my 50 Gils," Lyn said as she chides Hector. "Fine a deals a deal, just a couple more minutes and I would have won," Hector said as he handed Lyn the Gil.
"Umm what's going on?" Christina asked in confusion. "A little bet me and your dad had sweetie," Lyn sound counting her money. "What type of bet?" Christina scowled while glaring at her parents. "We had a bet to see how long it would take for you to get ready?" Hector said while rubbing the back of his head. "I said less than an hour and your dad went over," Lyn said with a smile. "58 minutes it took geez just a few more minutes," Hector sighed.
Christina upon hearing the news punches her dad in the arm. "Really you think I would take longer than an hour on such an important day," Christina said while Hector rubbed his arm. "Don't look at me she has your temper," Lyn replied nonchalantly while Christina went to give her a hug.
"Are you ready sweetie?" Lyn asked Christina. "Go have fun and explore to your hearts content," Hector said while putting Christina in a bear hug. "Just remember we love you honey and you always have a home with us," Lyn said. Just then a squawk catches both of Chris's parents attention.
"We haven't forgot about you Coco," Lyn said. "Yeah we need you to watch over her you know how she get's," Hector told Coco. "Really I am not that bad.. Hey that cloud kinda of looks like Coco wait what was I saying?" Christina said. "See Coco that's why we need you to watch over her," Lyn said.
"Before you go take this," Hector said handing Christina a backpack. "What's this for?" Christina asked her dad. "It contains stuff you will need for your journey," Hector said. "What type of things?" Chris asked excitedly. "Thats a secret you will have to find out when you leave," Lyn said to Christina.
"So this is it mom, dad I will be weeing you later *sniff* *sniff*," Christina said as some tears began to form. "Shhh its okay honey just remember we love you and you always have a home here with us," Lyn said pulling Chris into her embrace. "Remember Chris this is something everyone is behind, heck the onlyvone who was opposed is sitting on your shoulder right now," Hector said putting both Lyn and Chris into a tight hug.
"Mom and dad you the right, I will come back a stronger and more mature person," Christina said. "Coco are you ready," Chris said as she made her way to the gates exit. "Here goes nothing," as Chris took her first steps out of the gate. Before she went further she turned towards her parents and waved goodbye.

Two hulking beasts of green fur prowl in the forests, growling and hissing as they catch the scent of their prey. Both of the beasts wear matching red masks along with what appears to be golden armor attached to their chests. They slowly approach their hunting grounds, barely visible in the distance, as they turn around and make clicking noises at several humanoid creatures made of burlap and covered with blades behind them. The two beasts, shaped like lions with long horns curved backwards scratch the ground before resting and keeping an eye on the small camp that their prey called home. Shortly, a woman walks away from the camp, which causes the beasts to stir, only for them to rest again for she was not the prey they were after. Once their target exposed itself, the hunt would begin.

Oh no. Not here.
"Ms. Tyla! Get out of the house, now! I think there's something in the basement."
Ms. Tyla was a nice Galka lady that Rue had been staying with for the past few weeks. It's not like Rue took up much space, but he was grateful nonetheless. It was a comfortable flat, with two floors and a basement where Rue kept the plans for whatever job he was currently hired for. He had a bit of a reputation for not staying in one place too long, but the Rubicon Mining Co. liked him enough to find a place for him to stay.
Said place may just possibly have a demon spawning in it right now.
"MS. TYLA! GET OUT!"
She was probably sleeping upstairs. You'd figure the roaring coming from the basement would wake someone up. Rue looked around. Gotta barricade the door. Knock the bookshelf over onto it!
He struggled with the bookshelf three times his height for about 15 seconds before giving up. New plan. Bar the door with with with....a sword! Family heirloom! Above the fireplace! Quick as a blink he found a chair, pushed it into place and hopped up to the mantle where the sword lay. He could barely lift the mass of steel that was twice his height in length, but he mustered up all his strength to grab the hilt and drag it over to the open basement doors.
...Open doors. Open. OPEN!?!?!
He looked to towards the stairs on the other side of the room and jumped. Some hulking creature that looked like a Bear that ate a Lion and set itself on fire was on them. Oh dear lord what to do...
"HELP! DEMON!"
Rue ran to the front door and flung it open, ringing a bell as hard as he could, and then turned around to see the beast charging him. He barely jumped to the side, only to see the beast right itself out of the charge and face him, standing upright. It must be at least 10 feet tall.
Tiny Tarutaru hands placed themselves on the Galka sword. Rue hefted it up as best he could, ready to swing.
"AAAAAAAAHHHH!"
As the beast came forward, he spun as hard as he could, flinging the giant sword around his body, using the momentum to try to get at least one good hit. He felt the moment the sword hit the beast. He felt it do absolutely nothing. He saw the beast's arm come down.
....ringing. Ringing in the ears and...oh...oh....OH....THERE IT IS! THERE'S THE PAIN! Explosions of sensory distress ran across Rue's tiny Tarutaru body as he fell off the wall he had just been flung into. He hit the ground soon after, but wasn't conscious for that.

The boy simply stood there, in the rubble of his home, watching the rain of fire. Screams of panic and desperation pierced the suffocating air; mothers screaming for their children, wives begging their husbands to stay, while they attempt to fight the inevitable. It all sounded a million miles away to the boy. The darkness in the sky laughs, a crazed laugh of madness, and the boy's eyes widen. His hands tremble, with both terror and rage, and he tries to move. But his legs refuse to obey him. And so he merely stands there, paralyzed, watching his world burn. When the Darkness in the Sky finally leaves, and the rain of fire turns to a dark snow, the boy's legs finally give out. He collapses to his knees, amidst a new world. The world of yesterday was gone, consumed in the darkest of flame, leaving a new world in its wake. A world of only silence.
"Open your eyes," the Grand Sage commands, and the boy, now a man of some years, obeys. "What did you see?"
"Only my past," the man replies nonchalantly.
"Only?" The Sage asks curiously. "One's past is a powerful thing, boy. It is the source of our strengths and convictions, of our very being. Now, I will ask you once more. What did you see?"
The man blinks, as realization is slow to dawn. "I... I saw..."
--------------- 98 years later...
"Draw," Dross says with a sly grin, taking a card from the deck, before placing another on the table.
"You're a terrible bluffer my friend," Lysander replies casually, shaking his head. "Set." He places one of his cards on the table, leaving them both with a hand of four.
Dross laughs, leaning back in his chair and taking a brief swig from his pipe. The smoke billows upwards in a small stream, forming several rings that grow progressively larger, before finally dissipating. "Well, I'm not one to brag, but I did learn from the best, Ly."
Lysander scoffs. "Don't be such a kiss-ass. It doesn't become you, Governor. Draw."
He takes a card from the deck, and places it in his hand, while Dross cackles again. "But I'm so good at it. After all, I made a career of ass-kissing. My turn. I draw."
The Governor of Vinna grins madly as he does so. He splays his hand of five on the table, revealing cards numbering six through ten. "Oh yeah! Full House, baby! I win!"
Lysander only shrugs. "Not really, but I'll allow you to believe that for a second."
He too reveals his hand, which contains all four Aces in the deck, and a Joker. "I win again."
Dross Valen bolts from his seat, eyes wide, grasping his gray hair like a lunatic. "Wha-? How! You do that every time!"
The aging Governor suddenly slumps, boasting a look eerily similar to a wounded kitten. "I give up. You are the one mountain I can never surmount. Please, teach me Master. Teach me your wondrous ways."
Lysander rolls his eyes at his old friend's theatrics. "Oh, get over yourself. Besides, shouldn't you be heading back to Vinna soon?"
Dross sighs, placing his hands in his pockets. "Yeah, yeah. I hear you. I'm heading back."
He walks down the old wooden steps of the front porch, and onto the damp grass of the forest. Lysander raises an eyebrow slightly. Oh? He didn't put up much of a fight, this time. How unusual.
"Hey Ly!" Dross calls back, grinning. His long gray braid billows in the slight breeze. "I'll take your ancient ass to town, one of these days! You can bet on that!"
Unimpressed, the Hermit in the Dark leans back in his oak rocking chair, and nonchalantly waves goodbye. "Whatever you say, you old fart."
Dross laughs, and walks away, disappearing into the trees. A wave of sunlight shines through the dark canopy, bathing the old wood cabin in rays of gold. It really is a beautiful day...

Soft....OW ok pain. On soft, but in pain. Dark out...ow. Ow. Ow. Blood pumping = pain...
Rue regained consciousness after night had fallen. His vision still was quite fuzzy after opening his eyes, and the darkness didn't help. He was on a bed of sorts. Probably in a medic tent judging from the smell. He still couldn't see very far. He could only make out a candle that stood almost right in front of him. Too sore to move still, let alone look for a match. Well then...only one option
*hack hack*
He coughed a little as he re-engaged his vocal chords.
"Fire"
Barely more than a whisper. Unsurprisingly nothing happened. Rue closed his eyes again and tried to remember what the Academy had failed to teach him. Meditating on what he guessed was his internal sense of magic, he tried again.
"Fire"
Not even a spark.
"FIRE"
A small poof of light flashed and fizzled out instantly. Rue sighed and closed his eyes. Forget it. He'd wait til he was better.

"Are you certain she'll forget...?"
A spark of lucidity flashes in the girl's mind, the beguiling voice of rest drowning out her thoughts and the conversation taking place at her side.
"Of course I am. ...Are you afraid of what would happen if she were to remember?"
...
The spark catches once more, igniting an inferno of consciousness. The girl attempts to move, but finds anything more than breathing to feel unnatural. She grasps for a memory, but even motion is unfamiliar... unattainable. Although her eyelids weigh down heavily, she eventually manages to flutter them open, her eyes adjusting to the light like a newborn's.
A room... humble and minimalisticly furnished, with a dim evening glow pouring in from the window. A tall man with pointed ears and a slender build sits at a table in the corner, nose planted firmly in some kind of book. He wears a white robe embroidered with a jagged red border. Instantly, the image evokes two thoughts in the girl.
Elvaan... White Mage.
Starting from the fingers and toes, the girl carefully and laboriously rebuilds her locomotive instincts, pushing and focusing until she could feel her arms and legs once more. A gentle hand rubs on her forehead and she quickly tries to resist, but her paralyzed arm fights her instinctual urge to harm the man until it goes away.
"...Who...?" The girl asks, not quite sure how she intended to finish that sentence and unable to anyway.
"Easy now, rest." The man says simply. "You've only just regained consciousness, there will be time to move later."
"...I..." Defiant to any reason, the girl continues to push. An arm reaches her chest, covered in bandages and she tries to push a leg up only to cry out in pain as the muscles in her tendon flare up. "...Who am I?"
The man gasps in shock. "Amnesia?" He asks. "But you weren't wounded on the head..."
The girl stares at the man tending to her, letting the question hang in the air.
"Ahhh... you see, I don't know who you are." The man continues. "I found you in the woods. This is Narshe. Do you know where that is?"
The girl considers his question, then shakes her head.
"It's an Elvaan city." The man explains. "Do you know about we Elvaan?"
"Elvaan..." The girl tosses the word around in her head, identifying it with her assessment of the man's physical appearance. She shakily lifts her forearm and points roughly at her face. "I'm... Hume?"
"That's right." The man smiles. "I'm Elvaan and you're Hume. Can you remember anything else...?"
"...Elspeth..."
"Sorry?" The man asks. "It sounded like you said 'Elspeth'... What do you mean?"
The girl struggles to support herself on one shoulder, her thoughts becoming clearer, although little more coherent. "...My name is Elspeth." She says. "That's all I remember."
The man looks impressed. "That was still remarkably quick... I'm sure everything will come back to you in no time!" He beams, doing his best to sound encouraging.
"Thank you for helping me." Elspeth says, letting herself fall back onto the pillow beneath her head. "If I had anything to take as compensation when you found me, it belongs to you. What is your name...?"
"Don't worry about all that." The Elvaan says dismissively. "I'm happy to help. The name's Arvis."
A girl waking with no memory... A town called Narshe and a man called Arvis... For whatever reason, this feels familiar to Elspeth. Like she heard it in a children's tale many years ago.
Arvis chuckles. "Funny, but at least there are no guardsmen knocking on my door looking for you." He jokes. Was he thinking of the same thing? "Get rest. Maybe next time you wake up your handsome thief will be here to whisk you off."
Elspeth blushes at the suggestion, although she's not quite sure why. The man's advice seems sensible though, as Elspeth closes her eyes and drifts off into a deep sleep.
"Ah, sorry. That's 'treasure hunter'..."

((Maybe if I post more than GX I can shame her into finishing quicker... ; P Nobody wants to be slower than the Cheese.))
Elspeth wakes once again, finding herself cold and shivering. Night has fallen, although she can't be quite sure that it's even the same day cycle as when last she was conscious. An icy breeze comes in from the window left ajar next to her bedside, so she forces herself to sit up and close it. Turning to let her legs hang down to the floor, Elspeth tentatively places some of her weight onto one foot, finding that it doesn't feel too bad. She places her next foot onto the floor and tries standing, but her knees immediately buckle as she falls flat on the floor.
How degrading... She thinks to herself, lifting herself into a kneeling position. Déjà vu...
She comes to a precarious stand, taking her waddling first steps as if she'd never walked before. Eventually, she manages to start exploring the house a bit, finding that Arvis had went off somewhere while she slept.
Like the common room where she had been put up to rest, all of Arvis' humble abode is modestly furnished with the only extravagances being a small alchemy lab set up near the kitchen and a gorgeously decorated, well finished grandfather clock. Elspeth goes to inspect the useful work of art, trailing a finger across the elegant patterns of swirls adorning the case and the well polished glass door guarding the time telling hands. She notices that the pearly frame of the clock inside also has a hatch, and overcome by curiosity she opens them both to look inside. A small vial of precious blue liquid sits there, and even she immediately recognises what it is.
An Elixir... but why hide it in a grandfather clock? Well, no matter. It would be wrong of me to take it.
Elspeth closes the doors, returning the precious Elixir to its hidden state.

Wacaan of the Rubicon Mining Clan was a giant among Galka. The kid-sized cot that Rue lay on was barely the size of his battle axe. Regardless, his voice was as reassuring as any other.
"You're awake now?"
Rue grunted as he rolled over. The hi-potion was working quickly.
"Chief. Yeah...sorry to be a bother," he jolted as he remembered why he was here, "The demon, Ms. Tyla, what happened?"
"We took care of it. Nobody was hurt worse than you, besides the demon anyways."
Rue sighed in relief, and turned his thoughts to other matters.
"Hey Chief...sorry, but I think...I'm not gonna be sticking around much longer."
The Galka chuckled with a voice like soft gravel.
"Yeah I figured as such. These past weeks you seemed a bit cramped here. Spiritually, anyways."
Rue decided to try a stretch and sit up. His body permitted him to do so, and he looked bleary-eyed at the chief by his bedside. Someone had lit the candle without him.
Wacaan passed a note to Rue with a number written on it.
"Tomorrow night, before sunrise, head to this dock in the harbor. I've paid some travelers to take you to the Elvaan."
"Hah, why bother. Last time I was there they refused to look at me."
The mountainous Galka moved in closer.
"Because you're a fighter at heart, even if you don't know how to do it yet. If anybody can find a way to empower you it'd be one of those bloody elves. Now hurry up and pack. Safe passage isn't cheap."
Rue swung himself out of bed, feeling himself return mostly to normal. He extended his hand as high as it would go.
"I can't thank you enough Chief. Of anywhere, I felt most at home here."
The chief reached down and took it in a firm shake.
"You're mighty welcome lad. None of these barbarians got half the mind you do. Come back here when you've found yourself. I've always got more digging to do."
The Galka rose to his full 10 feet and walked out, ducking under the doorway, leaving Rue behind. ---------------
The next morning Rue was boarding a ship.
