One thing you could always do is just handwave away brightness and stuff for ease of play.

My sheet isn't even set up yet, but since Crow's finalizing what the dice actually do and know what relationships I picked out, I already rolled. One was a three. The other was 2 points, and I rolled... A 6 and a 1. So that should be fun.

So, who will be the first character to seduce an NPC?

So, who will be the first character to seduce an NPC? I wanna say Dandy is the Bard? It's always the Bard.

Punk's the bard and already said he's not playing that kind of bard.
Smart money's on Neo.

Yeah but there's no other dreggins for him to seduce.
My money is on Cheese's Robot.

Good thinking. You may be right. We'll see. My character is not the type to flirt or try to seduce someone. Nor is he actively looking for any relationship. And his Cha mod is only a 1. But my goal as a player is to get him to go full Nyl and bang The Red as soon as possible.

Yeah but there's no other dreggins for him to seduce. My money is on Cheese's Robot. He(It?) will seduce an entire weapon rack and I'll have to pay the blacksmith for damages.

Is a standard longbow something we could have in our starting gear, or no?

Is there a reason it couldn't be?

This is mostly for new 13th age players, but the old-timers might learn some stuff, too.
Icons are strong. The Red isn't just strong because she's level 13. Icons get bonus abilities, resistance or immunity to status effects, things like that. I also made a special ability or two for each icon.
For example, the Red. She actually has two. One's a secret. The other is an ability that triggers when she's staggered, dealing AoE DoT and giving her +AC/PD, but -MD.
Aimie is an exception. She not only has the Lord High Magus' special ability, she not only has several modified spells taken from all the spell classes, but she also has an extremely powerful BULLS***-tier ability. You might be able to guess some of how it works from her lore entry. If you don't find a way to neutralize it, you won't be able to beat her. It won't matter even if the party gets to level 10 and brings 5 icons. She is known as Deathless One for a reason.
Even the weakest icon, The Grand Oracle, would wipe the floor with the party. With or without her bodyguards.
There is a reason I'm warning you ahead of time about this.
I will also say there is one icon the party could defeat in the first few sessions, but only because of very special circumstances.

This is mainly for Punk and Dandy's benefit, but my thoughts as someone who's GM'd 13th Age for nearly 3 years: You don't mess with Icons, except for in the highest of tier campaigns. This is not one of those. If you meet a hostile Icon in person, you flee and deal with the Campaign Loss, save under very special circumstances. You treat them like you would Cuthulu in Pathfinder or a Tarrasque in D&D. There is no fighting. There is only surviving. The Deathless One in particular is very, very similar to the Big Bad of my campaign and I'm likely quite familiar with some of the abilities Crow has given her. I also know her level. Treat her as literally death incarnate, or Thanos with the IG, or true form Darkseid, or whatever helps you understand she's the biggest, strongest thing in the campaign.
I'm saying all this because I'm now about... 98% sure we're gonna run into her on session one. Any attempt to fight would be an instant TPK.

I'm saying all this because I'm now about... 98% sure we're gonna run into her on session one. There is a 0% chance that the party won't pick a fight with an icon, I can just feel it. And Aimie is not a 0% chance. Therefore, as the worse-case scenario, it's 100%.

And Aimie is not a 0% chance. Therefore, as the worse-case scenario, it's 100%. But we know for certain neither Cheese, nor myself, nor GX would intentionally invite a TPK. And I don't think Punk or Dandy would either. They wouldn't go through all the character creation stuff or even join a campaign in the first place just to bring it crashing down instantly. And in-story, a character would have to be literally too stupid to live to even try to fight an Icon. And in the worst case scenario that Punk or Dandy's character does pick a fight with Aimee, or any other Icon, that is most definitely grounds for the GM to throw those characters to the wolves and let the others escape. It will be fiiiiiine.

If I assume the worst will happen and prepare for it, it can't go horribly wrong. Cough any of Nyl's plans ever cough "Don't worry Warin, it's just 2 mimics, I totally got this" "Alright, I'm just gonna leave Sis a message and break on outta here, oh hey Grandpa" "The Crown of Tiamat? Sounds like a great idea!"

We're doing Sat instead of Sun, so I lost my safety net day... Which means I need everything done and ready to go tonight so I can polish tomorrow. Won't be able to do anything Fri night and I won't rely on Sat morning.
If you haven't chosen your magic item or sent your portrait, do it tonight. Do it do it do it do it. Please.

Some more house rule stuff.
Nat 20 doesn't guarantee success, at least not the way you plan, but it will always have some benefit. I guess that's not really a house rule so much as a negation of the usual house rule...
I'm borrowing a page from Gloomhaven's book and using loss of recoveries to represent extreme physical exertion. Digging out a cave-in, maybe, or prolonged exposure to heat/cold. Or effects like being drained by a vampire/succubus/incubus. Usually you'll at least get some kind of save to resist it.
I mentioned meaningful death, but explanation for new guys. Basically, if you manage to die to mooks, it's going to coma you instead of kill you. It's not going to be as limited as Schism where the rule being in effect's kind of rare. Basically think if they have a name you're in danger.
Also, campaign loss. If you retreat from a climactic fight, don't make it in time, have you take a full-heal early, etc., you'll get a campaign loss where someone opposed to the party gets some way to bite you in the butt. Possibly far down the line.
