I was shocked to find a quiant, cozy office, with a warm fireplace in the middle of the back wall. The room was small, bur spacious enough to mive around in.
The lone figure I was expecting stood in front of the fireplace, his back turned to me. He was wearing some sort of black overvoat. His skin was even paler than mine, which was surprising.
"Well, have a seat."
My face contorts.
"I'll stand. This shouldn't take long."
"Hm. That's what we always think."

"I just need you to take me back. That's all." I say it eith a determined stare, yet I silently gulp out of nervousness.
Without hesistation, or any sign or emotion in his voice, he responds, "No."
I clench my fist at my side, and stare sharpyl at his back. "You have to! I have to go back! I have to save them!" I started yelling and took a step forward without realizing it. I feel renewed adrenaline flowing through me and my body is numb with eagerness.
He sighs. He steps closer to the fire, turns, and begins to pace back and forth in front of the mantle. His pale face looks almost ghostly in the fire's light.
He speaks now with a harsh, condescending tone.
"No. We do not have to do anything. We will stay here. There is nothing left for you to go back to. That timeline is no longer relevant."
I frown as he says that, and can't control myself when I yell back,"How can you say that!? Those are my- our friends! They're like our family! We can't leave things as they are!"
He stops pacing and turns to face me. For a moment, I think he's going to yell back, but instead he simply sighs. Which irritates me even more.
"You don't seem to understand. I was like you once. Stood where you are and said the same things. But it is irrelevant. Your timeline is simply one of an infinite number. Perhaps it was once the Alpha timeline, and you the Alpha James, but that is no longer the case. Everything in that timeline went wrong. You all lost. Died or corrupted. And in your case, you will stay here and inherit my place. One day you'll have the same exact conversation with yet another James, and the cycle will continue. There is no use, nor point in returning to your timeline to attempt to save your friends. Even if you somehow managed to return and save all of them, it would not reverse the Alpha Quantum. You wouldn't become the Alpha James again and you would all probably just fail again in the future."
I couldn't stop myself. His words were like a sword through the gut, and I couldn't stand it. I rushed forward.

"Uuuuurrrrrggghhkkkkkkkkkk: I looked down at my chest and felt the searing pain of being split open entirely. His sword, my sword, was through me. It hurt so much. I'd been beaten and torn and even shattered entirely, but this was different. I could feel the cold of the blade. Which should've been impossible. I shouldn't feel cold. I can't feel cold.
And the blood. It kept streaming... It was flowing down my chest and my legs an dripping on the floor.
I tried to clear my head and let myself fix it. I could fix it. I'd fixed worse before. I'd survived worse. I concentrated and searched myself. I pushed it. I could feel my energy surge, then fizzle. And nothing. My wound didn't freeze over. It didn't heal. The sword was still there. Nothing.
