Note: This is a complete reboot. For links to the previous journeys, see the former CYOA, "The Unnecessary Balance VII".
Foreword: This has been a long time coming. This story is very dear to my heart. The previous version, however, was plagued with inconsistencies and plot holes and was generally a convoluted mess. This time, I have learned from those mistakes, and the story will be streamlined and handled much better. I may not be able to update regularly every day, but this CYOA will be finished, no matter what. This I promise you. Now, without further ado, let's jump into a world most of you have probably forgotten!
----
It has been countless millennia since the war with the Fell Dragon, Grima, left the world in flames and the continents shattered. The once thriving continent of Ylisse is now nothing more than a long forgotten memory, replaced with a dark, foreboding wasteland covered in a perpetual toxic fog. The continent once known as Valm eons ago is now thriving under a different name; now simply known to most as the Mainland, this new continent is the hub of the world, and is over twice the size it was long ago. Scattered around the Mainland are many islands and large archipelagos, with lush jungles and hot climates, each home to various native tribes, sailors, pirates, and more.
The Mainland itself is host to three great powers: The Empire of Drakia to the north, which is the largest and most powerful of the three, the Kingdom of Midgard in the center of the continent, and the Theocracy of Grancelia, dedicated to worship of the Goddess. Known as the land of "Iron and Snow", the vast Empire of Drakia stretches across the entire northern half of the continent. It is a cold, rugged landscape, and its people are famous for being tough and hardy. The military of Drakia is the most powerful in the world, and their Wyvern Lords dominate the skies. The Kingdom of Midgard is a bastion of prosperity and commerce, and has trade agreements with every nation and people in the known world. The Theocracy of Grancelia is a country of the pious, the devout, and the holy. It is a gorgeous and fertile land of golden fields, lush forests, and many rivers. The Holy Capital, also called the City of Waterfalls, is considered one of the wonders of the world. Aside from these great titans, there are the Free Kingdoms of Athlantia, Melbourne, and Arcadia, along the eastern coast of the Mainland. Athlantia is a port city of sailing and commerce, and it is ruled by a fair and just King. Melbourne is known as the Kingdom of Merchants, and is a large city to the south of Athlantia, governed by the Council of Lords. Arcadia is the City of Magic, and is a place of learning and wisdom. It is governed by the Archmage, an enigmatic individual few have ever met.
For centuries, the land has been at peace, the tragedies of the past but a distant memory. But a sinister force works from the shadows to upset that delicate peace, and once again throw the world into the fires of war. Now, once again, the wheels of fate are turning, and the world is in need of a new hero. But will that hero save the world, like the Hero-Kings of old, or will they walk a darker path and further its destruction?
