Actually, "Turban" should be just outside of the trench, above ground. However, there are still sandy bits of him around the area.

But in your post, you said Turban unleashed his Sand Dragon Roar at the Light Mage "above" him. That's what's confusing me. If Turban is above ground, how is Orion above him? |

So, while Demon God's Army does create multiple clones, they're only tricks of light. They can't actually harm Turban. The spell also completely conceals the caster for a short time, essentially turning him invisible. The spell is a Maximum Defense spell, meaning that only another Light Magic user can disable it.
Orion mainly uses it as a stall tactic in order to prepare Gate of Babylon mid fight, which is exactly what he's doing. While Turban can't disable the spell, he might be able to discern Orion's true location with enough sand.
