"...Why anyone would come here to search for someone named Lorelei, I don't know. But, did you or did you not hear about the job we've been offering?" the man asked.
As he spoke, a Dunmer woman walked up behind him, "If you're here to take the job, great. If not, we have too many problems to deal with already, so you'll have to leave. We're not accepting new students at this time."

"I could probably do it." Avenicci told them as he spotted Dorian who had already snuck behind the mages somehow. "I can pick locks, cast lockpicking spells, and do both at the same time for a really awesome sound effect. Oh, and it works better too."

While on his journey to find out what was going on with his loyal pet star Francis kept thinking about the dream he had.
In the dream he was strolling through the woods when a hooded figure approached him. An ancient god is looking to return everything to the void and only you and a handful of people can prevent that from happening. He asked the figure "how I barely have any idea about what's going on in the outside world let alone how to stop it". Believe in your self you were gifted with a great power you must use it. But how?
Before he got an answer he would wake from his sleep. Star looked at her master with concern in her eyes.
"Its OK girl we will find a way and who knows maybe I will learn a little about myself" now let's get going the sun starting to set and I am not to found of wandering around at night.

The two mages look at each other, then nod. The Dunmer woman motions for Avenicci to follow, and she leads him across the bridge and into the courtyard while the other mage follows.
"I hope you're as good at lockpicking as you say you are. Countless others have failed, and we've tried everything we know to do," she says.

"It should be no problem." Avenicci cracked a smile as he followed the mage. "What do I get in return?"

"The undying gratitude of everyone at the College. Or at least gratitude for about an hour. It's hard to tell how people will react," the man said, seemingly very serious.
"Don't listen to him. We'll work something out, if you can really open the door."
They entered the main building, and then stopped in front of the door to the Arch-Mage's Quarters, which were securely locked. The door showed signs of many failed attempts to unlock the door, or even destroy it in order to enter.
"Nothing has worked. Any spells we try to use just bounce off of the door, or go right through it without doing anything else. And no one has been skilled enough to pick the lock," she said.

"Stand back." Avenicci instructed as he readied a pick and inserted it into the keyhole before slowly turning it. "This is something that I made myself."
He fiddled with the lock some more before casting a spell through the pick, causing it to glow.
"This combines both ancient and modern lockpicking techniques with Cyrodiilic magic. Voila!"
The lock made a cachunk! sound as the door opened with a creak.

"Finally. Maybe now we can get some answers!" the Breton said to the other mage.
She nodded, and they both prepared spells before slowly opening the door, and stepping inside. The room was eerily quiet, and it felt cold. Like there was no life inside.
"Odette? Odette, are you still in here? Make some kind of noise if you can hear us, please!" the man called as he cast Magelight, sending the sphere of light to the side of the room directly in front of them, where it revealed a cluttered desk and bookshelf, both covered in dust.

Avenicci's eyes were filled with wonder as he saw all sorts of strange artifacts in the room before he headed over to the desk.
That's a very odd Soul Gem. It's... twisted. Is that one of Kagrenac's tools?
He picked up the strange blade before blowing off a thick layer of dust that showed its lack of use.

"I wouldn't hold Keening so close to that soulgem if I were you," the woman said as she looked through the papers on the desk. "They say a student here disappeared when he tried to use them to solve the disappearance of the Dwemer. To this day, his body has never been found."

"I guess the experiment was a success." Avenicci responded as he placed Keening as far away from the Soul Gem as possible.
He then traveled over to a bookshelf were several interesting novels laid covered in a thick layer of soot and some had mildewed. There were some on Dwemer, an ancient Falmer text, a crazy book called Ruminations on the Elder Scrolls, and On Daedric Artifacts. The last book had been neatly kept and had only a finite layer of dust coating it's leather cover.

"Anything interesting in those books? There are a few more over here that it looks like she used often. Mostly things about Daedra, although there are a few about Artaeum and the Dwemer," she said as she looked through another shelf, "And here's some on...vampires and other undead. The only way I could explain that is her interest in Conjuration..."

"No, not really." Avenicci answered before pulling out On Daedric Artifacts. "There's nothing marked here, but do you know if the Archmage had interest in any particular artifact? Azura's Star is what I'd personally go for, but she could have other interests."

"She would become so engrossed by her research that she would change from a very social person into a complete recluse. At times she would even lock herself in here and would only come out occasionally at night. Even then, we rarely ever got a chance to speak with Odette at those times. But as soon as she finished her work, she would go back to her normal self and would tell everyone about her findings... Maybe it was odd, but she got a lot done that way, and that's why we're still not sure if she's really gone or not. This could just be another one of her projects, and it's just taking longer than usual," she said, clearly in denial that the Archmage was truly gone.

"Uhuh..." Avenicci nodded as the mage spoke before noticing a very odd mirror. "Excuse me for a moment."
He immediately followed that by launching a Soul Trap spell at the mirror which then reflected back at him.
"Interesting..."

"Why would she have a mirror that reflects magic by her desk? If she used it to practice, she would probably keep it where any reflected spells wouldn't damage her research."
It was clear that at that moment, nothing was adding up. Everything seemed strange, several things weren't in the places you would expect them to be, and numerous smaller oddities also existed.

Bingo.
Avenicci saw a small chunk of blue malachite next to three very odd rings with disturbing auras.
"Mind if I keep this?" He asked as he picked up the chunk of ore and waved it around.

"But that belongs to-..." she began to say, before realizing that such a small amount of the malachite probably wouldn't be missed, "If that's what you want, then fine, but we don't owe you anything else. That's your payment."
She took a few minutes to straighten up the papers on the desk before walking over to one of the bookshelves, and trying to put everything back where it should be. Her back was turned from Avenicci as she did so, but she hoped that would keep him from asking to keep anything else.
"You can go now. There's no reason for you to stay when we can investigate by ourselves."

Wonder what these'll sell for...
Avenicci thought to himself as we walked out of the room with both the malachite and the rings. He'd grabbed the rings and hidden them behind the ore as he waved it earlier to distract them as he dropped the rings down his sleeve before he shifted them to a small pocket inside of his fancy clothes.

Once Avenicci was outside and walking on the bridge, the Breton mage from earlier walked up behind him. He had seen the rings earlier, so when they weren't there, he knew where they must have gone. Without saying a word, he readied a spell, one that he had never shown anyone else. Once it was charged, he cast it on the unsuspecting Avenicci, who then crumpled to the ground and struggled to hold himself up with one arm.
"You're lucky I haven't told anyone else about what you did. Stealing from sweet, lovely Odette. What kind of cowardly man does something like that?"
He then turned and started walking back toward the college, but he did have a few more words for the thief.
"Consider this a warning. I don't want to ever see you near the College again, or Winterhold at that. And if I do, you won't have all your fancy spells to defend yourself with, and I won't hold back," he said, and then he left as silently as he came.
