"Hey Zachi, how much money do we have?"
She didn't have to think at all.
"...bit less than $200."
Mike turned back to CC.
"Let's take on some Noise. We could use the practice anyways."
CC smiled, "Many hands make light work! Let's get started!"
Spencer coughed.
"After we put away our bags," she corrected, "We hijacked a staff locker for storage."
...how do you hijack a locker?
"Uh...right then. Guess we'll just wait for you to get back."
"Yay!" CC jumped in the air, "Come on Spency!", and she dashed away. Spencer hastily gave chase...
Mike sat down next to Zachi. He looked at her. Something was off...aha, she wasn't on her phone. Instead she was twirling her pen around her thumb.
"Your phone crash?"
Zachi replied, focus still fixed on the twirling pen, "We're fighting soon. I'm thinking of ways to be more useful."
"Well," Mike said, "you could try, like, talking to your partner. Sticking to business of course, if that's your thing."
Zachi seemed to consider this, before catching her pen and holding it still. "Alright. I'm going to try inking walls or objects instead, to give you more space on the ground." She turned very slightly in Mike's direction.
Mike replied, "Uh...thanks. But you know, the ink doesn't affect me on foot. Maybe the explosions wont affect me either."
"Do you really want to test that?"
"Well...I got impaled in that last fight and I lived. But maybe as a last resort."
"...did that hurt a lot?"
Mike snorted, "Yeah." Then something struck him, "Wait, why do you care?"
"I want to know in case it happens to me." Mike looked but Zachi's face didn't change. She spoke again right away, "Business. Can you do anything besides ram things?"
"Uh...Haven't tried yet."
"Ok. I'm thinking of a few tests we could do..."
At the mall entrance, Jesus and Sparkles were looking around.
"She said "event" right? So like...look for a crowd?"
Jesus nodded, looking around. Sparkles checked her phone. Zachi hadn't responded to her previous text...and there's no way she's double-texting her (reeks of desperation, eugh). She checked around to see if there was anything on a bulletin board. Meanwhile, Jesus decided to try a scan. He tapped his Player Pin and opened up his senses...
"Grumble-duckling-hammock!"
Jesus leapt back, exclaiming and snapping out of his trance. Sparkles noticed and ran over.
"What did you do?!" She half inquired, half demanded.
Jesus shook himself. "Jelly-narcissistic-evergreen-of-ham-and-tiger-proclamation-MFPH" he grabbed his mouth, stopping himself from running it and taking a moment to compose himself. Instead he pulled out his book and turned to the front page where Sparkles had written all sorts of relevant words. The girl read to confirm she was getting the message.
"Reapers. Noise..." Jesus flipped ahead to some other part of the book, with words highlighted. Sparkles read it but looked up at him strangely. "Monster?"
Elsewhere, two people lying on the street were slowly regaining consciousness. The shy Asian girl came to first. She twitched violently before getting up, as if she thought she was still in a nightmare. She looked around, quite shaken, not quite sure what was going on, but fairly certain that she was safely outside the library...since she could see the library on the opposite street corner.
She looked around and quickly found her partner, rushing over and soundlessly shaking him to get up. Fortunately, he didn't need much of that. He sat up, looked around, looked at her, and spoke, moreso to himself.
"...why weren't we erased?"
Mike responded, suddenly getting it "So it's like a spring board?"
Zachi nodded, "Assuming everything works as expected. We'll need to actually test the limitations of-" She stopped when she noticed Spencer and CC returning.
"Hey," Spencer said with a shrug, "Miss me?"
Mike and Zachi didn't respond, and just got up to meet them. CC smiled.
"Okay!" The skinny girl started, "The Player Pins don't work around these tables sooooo where do ya wanna go?"
"Personally I like the Food Court," Spencer added, "More things to wreck there."
Mike looked at him strangely.
"What?" Spencer said, "Collateral damage doesn't stick. You haven't noticed? I could blow a car up while fighting Noise, and after they're beat everything goes back to the way it was. It's really convenient."
I wonder how much GTA this guy plays...
"Right..." Mike replied, "Anyways. We should go somewhere with space to fight so um..."
A) Food Court B) Kid's Play Area C) Department Store D) Outside

C. I've played Dead Rising, we can grab something not bolted to the ground and use them as weapons. And who says no to weapons?

"Many hands make light work!" Was this intentional? I think this was intentional. Anyway, B sounds hella good, because blowing up children and potentially kiddy-themed Noise.

I'm fairly certain we can't fight Noise physically, so I can't wait for the weapons to go wrong.

I'm fairly certain we can't fight Noise physically, so I can't wait for the weapons to go wrong. There are melee pins, though. And Joshua dropping cars on people. And Beat skateboarding people. And Shiki's Stand.

Those are all Psyche-activated though. And Neku and Shiki polishing the crap out of that noise disguised as Japanese Seymour with either a cloth or their bare hands. Either way, it was through physical contact.

Mike, Zachi, Spencer, and CC walked over to their chosen battlefield.
"So what are your Psychs?" Mike asked the other pair.
"I shoot stuff," CC said cheerily, "I've got a rapid fire and a charge shot, and one pin that lets me control them with my mind. Spency...well, it'll be easier to just watch him later. What about you two?"
Mike looked at Zachi, who didn't respond, before responding. "Well, Zachi draws trails of sticky stuff on the ground, and then she can blow it up. It makes more sense in practice. And uh...I can tackle things."
"Tackle things?" Spencer said, "You have three pins right?"
"Yeah?"
"And they all do the same thing?"
"...I guess so? Haven't really checked."
CC giggled, "Well no time like the present. Let's get hunting!"
Mike saw the play area in front of him. It was mainly an open plaza, but with steps that led down to a carpeted enclosure. Inside there were a few small plastic jungle-gym type things, as well as some of those coin-op rides. It was crawling with kids running about and nearby parents...most likely here while the other parent shopped.
"So we're gonna fight and kill things here huh?"
Spencer grinned. "Yep. So we split profits even 4 ways, sound good?" He looked around, didn't see anyone arguing, and continued, "Cool with me."
Spencer tapped the Player Pin on his shirt and focused, and to Mike's surprise, he started to fizzle like TV static and glow with a dark blue aura.
Is that what you look like when you do the scanning thing?
CC's player pin was attached to her boot just above her left ankle. She lifted her right foot slightly to tap it with the heel and she too opened up her senses. Zachi followed suit, as did Mike.
...so bored! I can't wait to go... ...what mommy did last night... ...go horsey let's go! Ride... ...like purple more than red... ...run run run run run run... ...dad could beat Batman if... ...the break of dawn! Let... ...I'm psychic! I can read.... ...really really want to scratch... ...zoom! Pow! I'll save all...
Voices slammed into Mike's mind and he almost physically recoiled from it. And he thought the kids were loud in the real world! He contemplated whether it was any more creepy to be reading the minds of 5-year-olds as opposed to adults...but then he saw them start to fizzle out.
"Wait what?" Mike said automatically. He looked right. Zachi was unfazed (as usual), but hey, they weren't fuzzy and blue anymore.
Spencer chuckled. "You really haven't done this much, have you? It's like we get our own little room to fight in. Just us," he gestured and a handful red noise symbols popped up, "and them."
The symbols burst and Noise jumped out of them. They were facing down a pack of about a dozen bats, half a dozen penguins, and three deer-like creatures.
"That's a lot of them!" Mike exclaimed.
"Well there's four of us now," Spencer snapped back, "Strength in numbers."
But they outnumber us!
"Gabba bats. J Popguins. Jazz Zellhorns." Zachi read off of her phone.
"Wait, they have names?" CC turned and asked. Zachi shrugged, and the line of questioning was quickly dropped at the bats began to swoop in.
Spencer and CC took ready stances. Two pistols materialized over CC's shoulder, and they quickly swerved down to scoop her lifeless hands up in their grips. She was pointing them into the mob, arms hanging from the pistols like marionette limbs. Spencer crouched slightly and held his hands at his side, palms facing each other vertically, and what looked like a pad of sticky notes floating between them.
"We'll handle the ones in the air," Spencer said, "Just keep the ones on the ground off of us!"
Who put you in charge?
Zachi muttered something that Mike didn't catch.
"Say again?"
"I'd prefer to be testing on sprogs...these are new species. Mike, you're the one who has to get up close. Your call."
A) Stick to familiar tactics B) Test some of Zachi's new ideas C) Try to get Mike's other pins to work
