"Hector... What was that?" she asked.

"I'd be lying if I said I knew," Hector replied, a distant look in his eyes. "I've had this... mark for as long as I can remember, but I know nothing about it. It's glowed like that once before, a long time ago..."
"Hey boss!" Michael calls from the doorway. "It's for you! You may want to, uh... Come see this for yourself."
What now?
Sighing, Hector joins Michael in the doorway, and is actually surprised by the woman he finds standing outside; seemingly average in all regards, average height and build, light brown hair and brown eyes, wearing a white coat bearing the seal of the Governor's office, with a brown leather bag slung over her shoulder.
"Hector Blythe, former Duel King of New Vesta? The Governor's office cordially invites you to participate in an Exhibition Match against the Golden Emperor, this Friday. You are also hereby invited to participate in the Millennium Cup this weekend, regardless of the outcome of the Exhibition Match."
She reaches into her bag and retrieves a golden envelope with his name printed on it. "The details of the event are within, as is a new Pro Duelist's card preloaded with 1000 points, a rare Duel Monsters card that will serve as your entry key to the stadium and all events associated with the Festival, and three VIP passes for the weekend. Should you decide to accept, email the Governor's office by Thursday at six o'clock PM. Should we receive no message from you, we will decipher that as you declining the invitation. You have until Thursday to decide. The contents of that envelope are yours to keep regardless of whether or not you decide to participate. Good day, my liege, and may the cards serve you well."
With that, she gives a polite curtsy, turns around, and walks away, leaving a stunned Hector in the doorway.

"It's none of my business...," Emma said, "but I'm still going to ask. Are you going to go back to your roots and duel in that match and the tournament?"

Am I? I can't possibly be considering this... Knowing him, this is just an elaborate ruse... But what if it's not?
"I don't know," Hector answers quietly, closing the door and returning to his desk. He slowly sits down, almost as if he were in physical pain, and his expression turned dark and unreadable. After a few moments merely staring into the distance, he opened the envelope and carefully poured the contents onto the desk. A Pro Duelist card with his name imprinted on the back, an open letter detailing the exact dates, times, rules, and current participants of all events associated with the festival, a gold foil Duel Monsters card in a plastic case, and... A sealed letter? Hector hesitated for a moment, then broke the seal and unfolded the paper. His eyes widened slightly.
"If you desire the truth, then win."
He grit his teeth and balled the letter up in his fist, as a rare pang of unadulterated anger violently tore through him. Then, as quickly as a storm at sea, it was gone. He took a deep breath, and picked up the golden card. He recognized the card instantly.
Tch. I figured as much. He's just taunting me. Darwin, you bastard...

"You don't like any of this, do you?" she asked him.

"No, I don't," Hector replied, leaning back in his chair and sighing. "It's been a long time since I last dueled, and an even longer time since I... Enjoyed dueling. I've made a decent living here, and I'm content to stay here. But..."
"But this is the perfect opportunity, right boss?" Michael interjects, seemingly quite serious for once. "We could use this opportunity to show off your new runner, and pitch our Accelerator Chip to the big wigs at Avalon corp. And what about searching for..."
"I know," Hector says, his eyes growing distant. "But I'm not a duelist anymore, Mike. And it's... Better that way. Besides, I doubt the Board would be willing to endorse and produce a line of Duel Runner parts created by a washed up has-been, just because his runner did well in the tournament. In case you didn't notice, I'm not exactly famous anymore... At least, not in a good way."
Michael looked away, crestfallen. "I... Know. But you can't just give up... Right? That's not who you are."
Maybe once upon a time, but now...
Hector rolled up the left sleeve of his jacket and stared at the intricate yellow lines covering his arm, something he was always careful to keep hidden; the mark of an ex-con, the mark of the facility.

Emma looked at He tor very seriously, but her voice had softened. "Not everyone thinks you're a washed-up duelist, and I know how I can prove that."

Hector looked up at Emma, curious. "And how is that?"
Not that it really matters in the end... Does it?

"I could tell you, but I know it would be best if you could see for yourself. So, how about you come to the festival, and you can have proof of that, Hector?"

Hector hesitated for a moment, then gave a small smile. "Alright, Emma. I was planning on taking a ride into the city tonight anyway."
He rises to his feet and hands the two extra VIP passes to Michael. "Go. My apology for interrupting your time with Taryn. I'll close up shop."
Michael's face lit up like a star, with such sheer exuberance that Hector couldn't help but feel envious. Or, at least, whatever you would call the hollow shell of envy. "Thanks, Boss! I'll make sure I bring Taryn over later to say hi."
A look of realization dawns on his face, and he suddenly turns to Emma. "Hey, I know! Let's all meet up at the festival tonight! We'll go grab a bite to eat and talk about old times!"

"It's a date. However, while we're busy catching up, I have a feeling one of my students might be hanging around and taking in the eye candy," Emma replied as she pointed back at Hector without turning away from Michael. After that she laughed, and hugged Michael as one would when saying goodbye to their brother who they hadn't seen in months. She then turned back to Hector, and tapped her wrist where a watch would be if she had been wearing one. "How about you come and find me after the events I'm part of are over? I'll have free time the rest of the night after that, but that's no excuse to run behind. I think you'll be able to guess what events I'm participating in with relative ease, since we seem to think so very alike."

Hector's smile widened ever so slightly, almost reaching what one might call a grin. "How about I just meet you at the Academy for the Duel Runner festival? I'll have my runner fixed and ready to go long before then."
He turned to look towards the back door and sighed. "Granted, it will take a lot more to get her ready for the tournament... It will be a busy few days if I do decide to participate, that's for sure. Let me check what time the Duel Runner festival starts."
He picks up the festival event calendar that had come with his tournament package, and quickly finds the slot for tonight.
Event: Duel Runner Showcase and Festival Location: Neo Vesta Duel Academy, downtown City District Time: 5:00PM to 7:00PM
He turns back to Emma and smiles. "How does 4:30 at the front gate of the Academy sound?"

Noelle drew, and immediately found what her most likely to be viable opening play was. She began cautiously, setting a monster and then two cards in her spell and trap card zone. That strategy was, she figured, her best bet at enticing Celio to make some kind of move so that she could have a better idea of what she was dealing with before deciding on a long term strategy. “So that’s one monster set, and two others cards as well. It’s your turn, Celio!”
